Questions on Luna
Before I asked just how usable people thought it was. Now I have more things I'd be very grateful for opinions on.After coming up with the combo Maeve Luna for one of our girls, my boyfriend's been wanting and wanting to make it Luna Maeve. I love Luna but I'm not really sure...Do Tamsin and Luna sound good for twins or totally mismatched?Does Leo, Luna and Tamsin make an okay sib-set? (Leo is our son)Then there's the problem of our last name. It's used in Harry Potter (though as a first name not a last name) and I'm worried that two names that both show up that series would be too much. EDIT: people are saying it depends a lot on what the last name is, which is kind of true. Usage-wise, it's along the lines of Remus or Godric. They're talked about a lot but their last names are used more than their first. What do you think??

I love the name Luna. It's been on my Maybe-I-Can-Use-This-For-A-Baby List since I was a little girl. Yes, I've been OBSESSED with names that long. I loved it long before Harry Potter's Luna was ever in the books. All names usage depends on the last name. It effects the flow. If you guys have Luna Maeve or Maeve Luna in the works, I'm guessing it sounds nice with your last name even if it's the first name of a character in a popular books series. Here's how I see Luna. If you love it, use it. It's not like Luna was a bad character. She was quirky, cute, and well-loved by many fans. Luna's been used in a lot of other books too, I'm sure. It's fine. What matters is if you love it. If it was me, Luna would be the first name as soon as my significant other said it was a go. I just think it's a great name, in my opinion, of course.
Harry Potter was a very popular series and it's a great one to pass on to kids. By all means, Luna the character is not a terrible image for a real life child. She was intelligent, independent, loyal to those she cared about, and she stayed true to herself above all else. Harry couldn't manage that at times and he was the main character. As for Tamsin, I really don't know how to feel about that name. It's just not one I'm really into, but if you love it, use it. It's all about finding the perfect name for the person you're going to love, raise, and care for for the rest of your life. You have to go with what your gut tells you, basically. Your instincts know the answer :DLeo is an adorable name. I love it. Leo and Luna is an amazing sibset. :D

Woww, thanks for the reply! Both versions sound great with our last name so yeah, it's just an issue for me if people roll their eyes at two HP names on the same person. But most people are saying that it's no big deal, and the series isn't as crazy popular as it was a few years ago, and all this kind of thing. I'm happy you love the name. It is a great name. If it wasn't for the HP worry I would've told my boyfriend yes already! I do love Tamsin. We both do though the nn Tammy is not very nice, Tamsi is so cute :) I don't mind if you don't like it. I'm not expecting everyone to love the names we choose!! But what I don't want is for everyone to be saying (or thinking) things like:
"I can't believe you named your twins Luna and Tamsin! They don't match!" Or "Luna?? With your last name? Haa, Harry Potter.." and that kind of thing. I'm glad you think Leo and Luna work okay in the same set. We get compliments on Leo's name all the time ^_^Thanks again!!

I still prefer Maeve & think Maeve and Tamsin are a better match, but if it was Luna vs Mackenzie I'd absolutely choose Luna.

Lol, thanks!

I know HP is very popular and people know it and the characters blah blah blah; but lets put things into perspective really. Are you really going to limit your children's names because they feature in the same movie as one another? They're not even on the same character!
I love Jeremy, Atticus, and Arthur - I would have no hesitation about using all of these as first names for future sons, even though they are all characters in To Kill A Mockingbird. I love them individually, I love how they sound, and that's all that matters.Personally I love Luna. I love Luna a lot more than Maeve and also I think that Luna Maeve sounds better than Maeve Luna. As a twin-set Tamsin and Luna are fine; also as a sib-set, Leo, Tamsin and Luna are fine.Go with your gut instinct, try not to read too much into it, or guess what other people's reactions are going to be. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is that your girls get names that you and your partner love.

Hmm.
This is actually a very good point.
My boyfriend is reading over my shoulder and cheering you :pThanks :)

Tamsin and Maeve are much better than Tamsin and Luna, I think :)

Unless your last name is Lovegood(is that right?), I think Luna will be fine. Tamsin and Luna are an adorable sibset, but Leo and Luna are a bit close for my personal tastes. I prefer Leo, Maeve and Tamsin myself.

Lol, it's not Lovegood. That would be too much even for my boyfriend!!Thanks for your help ^_^

Well, how set are you on Tamsin? I kind of like Luna and Maeve as a sibset. So maybe Luna Tamsin and Maeve ______. The HP connection doesn't both me at all. It's not like it's a bad correlation. Personally, I love the books and would be perfectly content to have names associated with it.

That's an interesting idea..
Fairly set on Tamsin now but not totally. A few weeks ago we wondered if Enya would be better (and decided no).
Luna Tamsin and Maeve something is worth thinking about. Thanks :)

I find Tamsin and Maeve wonderful and Tamsin and Luna very flat by comparison. Not a mismatch exactly, but nothing that I'd bother to notice. I'd also prefer three different initials for the three sibs, not two Ls and a T. Luna has got powerful Harry Potter connections that you can't overlook, because nobody else will. Especially if the ln has also got connnections of its own. I think you've got some persuading to do ... good luck!

"Luna has got powerful Harry Potter connections that you can't overlook, because nobody else will." - this is a good line. I will use it if I decide I gotta persuade him out of Luna! Thanks for you help :D

You guys were so set on Maeve not long ago! I say, go with what you like =)

I know!!
Because Maeve was the name we were always like, "if we have a daughter we'll call her Maeve" so we were set on it. But now my boyfriend likes Luna more and I already told him a total No for Mackenzie which he wanted, and I do love Luna, and my brain is just like aaaarrrgggghhhh.I get the feeling I'm totally overthinking the whole thing. But it's not like I can forget them just now..

I like Luna Maeve a LOT better than Maeve Luna. I just like the flow and I think Luna is a good first name in general.
Tamsin and Luna are fine for twins. They're both usable and "normal" but also uncommon and a bit whimsical? Maybe that's not the right word... they make me think of mist, fog, the night sky, nature, etc.
Meh.... I don't like sibsets with one repeated letter. 'Leo, Maeve, and Tamsin' would be better than 'Leo, Luna, and Tamsin'
Hmm... it depends on how HP the name sounded to me. Like... if it was Severus or something it would be too obvious. But if it's something like Percy, I think it's fine and not too much Harry Potter.
(I also like the combo of Luna Tamsin, although I know that's not what you were looking for :P)

I'm glad you think the feeling of Tamsin and Luna kind of match! I was worried about this. I feel that they do but I can't give any reason for it so I didn't know what other people would think. Sometimes it's so different! We can't do anything about Leo's name now though, so it would be Leo, Luna and Tamsin. I kind of think that two names with L would be okay and three would be stupid.Yeahh, the Harry Potter thing is the biggest problem for me... Luna Tamsin is pretty awesome. Thanks!

Hmmmm I love both Maeve and Luna, though Luna a bit more so I'd prefer it in the first place spot. As for matching, I don't think names have to match per se. I do this all three names sound fine together. Even though Leo and Luna start with the same letter, they don't sound similar at all so that wouldn't be a problem. Some would feel like Tamsin would be left out by not having an L name, but I personally think that's ridiculous. As for the Harry Potter question, it would make me think twice. Without knowing what it is, it's hard to say., I mean how central is the character to the story line? If your last name were Harry I would not use it. I would also not use it if it's someone that the Luna character associated with at all, for example Seamus, who was a fellow DA member and shared classes with Luna. Also if it's a name that is very Harry Potter. For example Peter would be fine since that's a fairly common name and not particularly associated with the series. If it were an unrelated, minor character like say Viktor then I wouldn't find it weird.Man that was a bit of a long weird set of rules. But I'm a HP nerd so you're bound to get that from me. Unless your last name is Hermione, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Leo and Luna do start with the same letter but that doesn't bother me. Like you said it's not like they really sound similar and I don't believe either that Tamsin would feel left out for not having an L name. Anyway, sibsets with all names starting the same are kind of cheesy. It's not Hermione xD
It's not anyone who Luna associates with either and the character is mostly called by their last name. Kind of along the lines of Minerva or Remus. They're practically always called McGonagall and Lupin. Would a Luna Remus be too much? Thanks for your answer ^_^

Another comment on the last nameI hope you don't find me creepy, I'm not determined to find out your last name or anything but the HP thing intrigues me and I'm also procrastinating an assignment, so I kinda went through the HP names. And obviously you don't have to say if it's on this list but of all the HP names, if it is one of these, I would avoid it, otherwise I think you're good and maybe overthinking the HP thing. (Also some of these would never be last names, but whatever, I included them anyway)Bathilda
Regulus
Sirius
Albus
Filius
Cornelius
Rubeus
Remus
Draco
Lucius
Minerva
Rufus
Severus
SybillAlso in my opinion, anything ending in S is quite Harry Potter-ish

Man I'm dying to know what it is. Don't worry, I wouldn't say my lat name on here either. So you're saying that you're last name is the character's first name, but they mostly go by their last name? I'm going to assume it's male since female first names aren't really last names often. So for example if it were Serverus Snape, your last name would be Severus and the character mostly goes by Snape right? In that case, I would ask yourself if that first name on it's own might give people pause to notice it's a Harry Potter name. If not, then I'd go for it.

Tamsin and Luna are pretty mismatched. If I met siblings named Leo, Tamsin, and Luna I'd be wondering where Luna came from. It's very flighty and fanciful next to the more classic and dignified Leo and Tamsin. As for your last name, it really depends on how common a name it is. Luna James, not a huge deal. Luna Sirius, no way.

Thanks for your help :)It's not a common surname like James.. it's the Harry Potter problem that's bothering me the most. It might be just too much.
