The names that got away
A pointless post, but I was just thinking about names I would have liked for our son, or our soon to arrive daughter. For whatever reason, they were off-limits or vetoed by spouse/relatives. Jasper - my aunt had a beautiful german shepherd named Jasper when I was young. I always loved the name (and the dog, even though he bit me once), but my mother wasn't thrilled about naming our son after a dog. Astor - aunt also had a german shepherd named Astor (Jasper's mother). Also loved the name...same objection. Stephane - Don't actually like the name but our son was born at 32 weeks. I looked up the inventor of the incubator and it was Dr. Stephane Tarnier. Thought it would be cool to honour a person responsible for so many preemie survivals, but the name didn't fly with anyone. Chloe - I love this name, but my sister had it lined up for a baby who was miscarriedXenophon (Xen) - A manager at work has this name. It is the coolest, most unique name that I have come across. But it would have been quite odd to borrow such a conspicuous name.

Luca - I wanted it for my first son, but OH vetoed it after agreeing to it in the early stages. He then let me have my second choice after a difficult birth. He said later on he would have agreed to anything at that point. Thistle - was supposed to be my second daughter's middle name, in honour of our home in Scotland (we now live abroad), but OH thought it was too out there. About 9 months after she was born he agreed to change it due to the upcoming Independence Referendum in Scotland, but by then I had cold feet. Could still change it, I guess. Rowan - was our girl's choice for the boys, but when I had a daughter I was put off by the fact that it's unisex and it has two pronunciations in Scotland. Still like it, but wouldn't use it as a first name.Torin - too similar to our surname. Names I'll never get to use because i'm done with babies - Magnus, Rune, Ronan, Azure, Wylda, Iris, Alba.

Katerina -- This is what I wanted to name dd #1 and DH was actually okay with that. The problem is that he wanted to choose the mn and he did, Nicole, which sounded awful paired with Katerina so I went with Katherine instead.Joy -- This is the mn I wanted to use so badly after Kate was born. I felt an immediate connection to it and will always think of it as part of her name. I should have fought for it/promised to compromise with a future child's name/whatever.Ditto with Caroline. This is what felt right with dd #3. At least it's her mn, though.I'm not sure if this counts since I never had a ds, however, I'm mad about Leo. While I can't exactly say it was a name that got away, I still feel a loss that I'll never get to use it, lol.BTW, I really like Jasper and Stephane.

For your names: I like Jasper and Aster a lot. However I agree with the dog connection being unfit for a child.
Chloe is cute, but very over-used in my area. I regret not using Camille or Clarion a bit for Clarisse, but I think we chose well. I do mourn a bit over using Farah, which is the name we had chosen for her (my sister named a pet Farah right after we told her our name choice, she thought we would be ok with that). I also am sad I cannot use Francesca, which was my grandmother's name. My sister picked it, but had a late term miscarriage right after she had decided on a name combo. We can't unlink that. We might not have any more children, so all my boy-name loves may be unused. I will regret the middle name Giotto and the first names Loic, Lazare, Evren and Renard the most.

We liked Carter for our third son, but friends used it a few months before us. Good thing too, I did not realize how popular it was (what kind of a failure of a namenerd am I!) and would probably have been a bit disappointed in myself if we had used it. Though I do still like the name.I think that's about it. Our taste is a bit more out-there than those around us. :)

Phoebe- my husband and I both love it, but my Aunt had a Jack Russell named it. It would have been weirdTess- My grandparents had a Weimeraner with the name, same issue.Monica- it's my cousin's name, and as much as I love her, I don't want people to think it was after her.Matilda and Ruby- I like both of these, particularly Matilda, but friends who I see regularly just used them, and I think they are still just unusual enough to make it odd.We had a boy name settled on last time, so no boy names vetoed.

Astor should stay on dogs, since it's pretentious.
Jasper, too bad, it's a good name.
Stephane - I prefer Stefan (same prn) because Stephane looks like Stephanie and Stephanie is so familiar that people would mistake it. Anyway, it would be phoney for me to use any exotic form of Steven ... the name in my language is Steven / Stephen.
Chloe - I like it. But if the popularity of Mia bugs you, this should have too.
Xenophon "Xen" - Assuming it's pronounced "zen" I'm not too thrilled by that. I like Xeno / Zeno though (ZEE-no). Xenophon is pretty weird - I can see why you'd think it was cool on meeting one, but I'm not seeing how it's cool enough to actually use. Not when you could use Cyrus. heh

Jasper - I like it, but I prefer Jesper for some reason. I also knew a dog called Jasper, which makes me wonder whether it's a bit of a dog name. Having said that, I would not hesitate in naming a child (not that I'm having one) after my dog, Max. I think he makes an awesome namesake.Astor - Just NMS, nothing wrong with it and as I've said, I see no problem naming people after dogs.Stephane - The idea would have been cool, it's just unfortunate that the name Stephane is not!Chloe - It's cute, quite popular, which I'm trying not to affect my decisions over whether I like or dislike a name (although it does). I think I do actually like it. I've known two lovely, beautiful Chloe's.Xenophon (Xen) - I love Xen, I would worry Xenephon is not far from Xenophobe. Maybe I'm being too fussy. But Xen is really cool.

Jasper & Astor - this is when you come up with some other reason to like the name; you don't tell anyone it's for a dog. :P

I think you're better off with what you've already selected.
I would absolutely not want to bear the name of anybody's dog, much less one that bit.
