Red?
Thoughts on Red as a nickname for male and females? What are the full names that Red could be short for? Could Red work on its own or only as a nickname?

I like it as a nickname, not really on its own though.
Redmond, Reddick, Reda, maybe Reed, or anyone named after something that's mostly red like Robin, Rose, etc.

At one point when I needed three letter boys' names I did consider adding it to my boys' list. I think it could work, but I also think Blue could work. It would make a cute nickname too, I read a book with a female Rowan nn Red.

I know a guy named Red. Actually his name is Redrum. I assume his parents were twisted. He is not so straight himself. He goes by Red though.(Side note: his daughters are named Corrin and Navaeh)
I have heard Red as a nickname for Richard too.
Maybe Winnifred or Alfreda for girls.
Anyone with red hair.
Red names like Ruby, Sienna, Scarlet etc.

There was a remarkably famous British horse called Red Rum - back in the 70s or 80s I think - which won vast sums for people who bet on it. It won something like the Derby? And was very much loved; seemed to be a charismatic beast. The reason I know this is because I went into a touristy shop in Scotland and found that someone had designed a Red Rum tartan! Not attractive as I recall, sort of dark red and beige. But clearly there was a market. Mr Redrum's parents could have won enough on the races to pay for a really good maternity hospital!

Like others have said I think Red is a more physical description than a name based nickname.I also think it is a perfect name for a pet not so much for a child.

It sounds like a nn for a cowboy or someone with red hair, or a pet's name.

I like it on a man only, and only as a nickname. When I was a child, my friend-who-lived-across-the-street's father was called Red, though his real name was John, because he had red hair. It's traditionally been a nickname for a man with red hair. But I knew a Red whom I really liked and who really liked me who did not have red hair. I assume Red was a nickname in his case, too, but don't know what his real name was. I guess he gives me a soft spot for the name.It could be a nickname for Redmond.

Red is more a physical appearance based nickname than one from names. I don't really like it. I think it works better for a man than a woman... With a woman it sounds like a come on from a man who doesn't know her...As for names it could work forRedmond
Raymond
Reginald
Rembrandt

I think it only really works as a nickname, if I met a Red I'd assume it was a nickname. I've known two woman named Rebecca who were nicknamed Red. I think it could work for any R name, but I mainly associate it with a trait nickname, red hair, red face, etc.

Red could possibly be short for Redford or Redmond, but it's almost always a nickname for a person with red hair. As such, it's a very dated, downmarket kind of nn, along the lines of Shorty, Slim or Blondie.
