Clara for a little dog? What would you call a dog?
I am dreaming about getting a dog (can’t really have one where I live now), and I dream about what I would name it. I want a little dog, like kleinspitz or pomeranian, or something in that direction. And if I choose to have a female, I may call her Clara. And if I get a male, I want to call him Morris. Does it sound weird to you? Well, I just really want to know about more alternatives and wonder what you would call a dog if you got one now. So, if you got a dog today, what would you call it?

Clara is rising in popularity for girls, so it seems odd to give the name to a dog. You might end up with a girl named Clara next door. How would she feel sharing a name with a dog?
What I would name it would depend on the dog and its personality. I tend to use guilty pleasures on pets. Usually, I have to play with an animal and watch it interact with others before I can decide on a name.
A few names that I might consider for a tiny dog.
Girl:
Tünde
Eilonwy
Sparta
Nymphadora Tonks
Fey
Juno
Artemis
ErisBoy:
Tryggvi
Percival “Percy”
Pippin
Valiant
Wadsworth (for a Boston Terrier)
Morpheus
Glorfindel
Shigure
Link
ScoutIf I had a pug, I would be tempted to name it Goblin or Gremlin.
For a Pomeranian or a Chihuahua, Yoda or Dobby would be cute.
A male bulldog would be Winston.

I'd just call it whatever the humane society named it, or something similar. Like if it was a red golden retriever named Buddy, I'd either go with Buddy or Rusty, which has a similar sound.Sorry to be a Debbie Downer...I've just learned this the hard way, is all.

Clara is lovely! My parents actually have a chocolate cocker spaniel named Clara. They were going to name her Daisy but then I put Clara out there and it stuck. I could picture Morris on a brown shaggy dog.I have an 8 year old black and white cockapoo named Mia Belle. I was living at home when I got her (my parents bought her) and I had to pick a name my mother would agree to. At the time she wouldn't agree to anything unusual or different. I like Mia and Belle on a pet, however. They seem a bit cutesy, short, and trendy to use on a child for me. It also fits her now. I also have a red & white w/ blue eyes 1 1/2 year old pomeranian/husky mix named Leonidas. Which def. reflects more of my style! If I were to name a dog now I'd do something a bit more magical sounding! My SO and I would like to get a female pom/husky mix or a full husky in the (far) future. I have a list of ideas for her:
Anouk
Anwen
Arabella
Arianwen
Blossom
Eira
Fauna
Gwyneira
Lumi
Lyra
Meadow
Nephele
Nymeria
Primrose
Sapphire
Selene
Serafina / Seraphina
Tulip
Winter

So glad I'm not the only one thinking of Clara as a good name for a dog. Daisy is lovely too tho. The kind of dog I want is very fluffy, so I think Morris will fit quite well. I love your dogs names. Mia Belle feels classic, while Leonidas feels more uniqe. Both names are really great. I especially like Arabella, Eira, Lyra and Selene from your list. Eira is actually my cousins name, so I couldn't use it for a pet. But it is a lovely name.

Clara is adorable! Morris on the other hand, I feel that it suits a cat more. Or, someone's surname. I'm definitely a cat person even though, and unfortunately for me, live and deal with 2 dogs. I never considered names for future dogs as I pretty much refuse to have any more dogs. Cats for now on LOL I considered names such as Ida, Mara, Lucy or Lydia for a cat so for a hypothetical dog, perhaps any of those? Our dogs are named Hannah (Maltese mix) & Riley (mini Dachshund)

Maybe Morris is more a cat.. I wish I could get a cat too, but I got allergic as a teenager. Although I love cats. I can't risk it being too much for me, so that I can't give the cat the love it deserves. Good thing that I love dogs too. I love Lucy for a pet! Lydia would be too weird because I have a friend named Lydia. Hannah and Riley are lovely dog names.

It would depend on the dog since I don't always name pets normal names; for example of the cats I've named the first one was Thor and my current boy is Glyph. Technically Glyph's full name is Petroglyph, although he sometimes gets called Glyphord the Big Orange Cat.It all depends on what the dog looks like. Thor I named because he had a lightning bolt like patch of white on his forehead and he was very bulky, fluffy, and red-orange furred - most descriptions of the Norse god Thor describe him having red hair - so it seemed like an appropriate name for him. Glyph is a classic tabby so he looks like he is covered in glyphs hence his name. Not knowing what my dog would look like before hand but in this hypothetical I am adopting a rescue Pembroke Welsh Corgi; her name would be something like Felicity or Phoebe or Stella if she was female. Or his name would Quincy or Toby or Jasper if he was male.

Funny that you named your pet Thor! I am thinking that if I have a son, I might call him Thor, after my dead grandfather Tor. My mother would certainly appreciate that. I love Toby for a boy! But I don’t feel I can use it because my sister has a cat named Coby, and I don’t want to sound like I almost copy her pets name. I also like Felicity and Stella, I had a cat named Stella as a teenager.

That's interesting, I just realized that you live in Norway so I bet Thor/ Tor isn't that unusual of a name for a son, in the US it is a very uncommon name. I'm curious why you would use the spelling Thor rather than Tor?Also I love the name Clara! It is in my top 25 names list for girls. Stella is also in that list.Morris is a cute name for a dog or a cat or a ferret or a turtle. I prefer it as a pet name than a human name. Until I have children and am done having them I won't feel comfortable using my absolute favorite names for a pet. Also I prefer names that end in the -ee sound for pets than for humans. For humans I like names that have nn's that end in the -ee sound.

It is actually quite dated right now, to be honest. But I think it has good potential to be trendy again, because it has a lot of great background with it, and it is short and simple. I choose Thor over Tor because I think it is more internationally friendly. And I think it looks prettier on paper. And we don't have that th-sound, so the h will be silent in Norwegian anyways. But it won't be just Thor, I think I want the combo Thos Magnus. Two names strongly attached to Norway and Scandinavia in general, but they work just fine in English. And as the world is being more globalised every day, I have that as an important criteria for my future childrens names. Both Clara and Stella are lovely names! And I see that I love several of your favorites, like Dorothea, Iris, Julian, Magnus and Cedric. I totally feel you about using favorite names on pets. But I also know that some of my favorites are probably just my guilty pleasures, and that it'll never end with that name. So then I can rather use it on a pet. Like Clara. And about Morris, I would never use Morris on a child, I see it clearly for a pet. It is funny and sweet in a charming way, and therefore perfect for a pet.
