Hugo
Better or worse than Hugh? I like Hugo for the author (Victor), and I think it just looks and sounds better than Hugh. Hugh is also somewhat out because it is too rhyme-y with the surname, but Hugo isn't as noticable. (The LN is four syllables and the -yoo sound is at the end.)I got so many wonderful suggestions in my last thread, but this one is standing out at the moment.

One of my son's friends is named Hugo, I really like it, it's a bit different without being too different, and not stuffy like Hugh. Only drawback to Hugo is the Spanish pronunciation is "Oo-go". Probably not an issue unless you live in the Southwest, but I know that's been an issue with my son's friend, Hugo. He's get's called "oo-go" by his teachers and classmates that are native Spanish speakers. He think's it's funny, but it drives his mother crazy. I don't think his parents expected Hugo to be a name that was difficult to pronounce properly in English.

It's a nice enough name. Hugo is the popular one here, and I have nothing against it. If it's less rhymey, go with it.

I have never liked Hugo, it just looks unwieldy somehow and there was a character in a book that I never quite got over. I don't really like the hard g sound either.I'm not too keen on Hugh, because it seems stuffy, but I like the Welsh spelling Huw. It just seems friendlier, stupid as that may sound!

I thought of the actor before the author, frankly. I haven't read Array's comment, but I wonder if she's mentioned Mr. Weaving as well. There is also the men's designer label Hugo Boss, which is très chic.I really like Hugo much better than Hugh, Mr. Jackman's gorgeousness notwithstanding. Hugo sounds more fun, Hugh sounds stuffy. But that's just me.

I'd say noMainly because I do know what your last name is/will be, and I think they still rhyme a bit. It's okay as a name, I just have negative associations with it.

I much prefer Hugo to Hugh but that's not saying much.

I adore it. I also like Hugh, but I prefer Hugo because I think it looks nicer, and because it makes me think of Victor Hugo.

i dislike the name

I think Hugo is more striking than Hugh and I like the Victor Hugo association. Hugo makes me think of Hugo Boss and Hugh of Hugh Grant. Hugo is a common name amongst Afrikaans speaking people in South Africa although with a very different pronunciation (He-ghoo). Generally I don't like Hugh or Hugo and would never use them. As far as H-names go I prefer Hadrian and Homer.:o)

Personally I very much prefer Hugh. Hugh is a name that I absolutely love. Whereas Hugo I just dislike for no real reason. It brings to mind an ugly hunchbacked villain, along with Igor, haha.I am a little hesitant about the sound of Hugh when saying it repeatedly, but generally I like the sound. I LOVE the meaning of Hugh / Hugo though : )That said, Hugh does very much rhyme with your future surname, which is sad.

I really like both Hugh and Hugo. But, Hugo has that extra something that makes it more special. It's strong and masculine, yet fun. It's unique but not unheard of. And I like Victor Hugo as well.

I really, really abhor both, sorry. They sound like huge, and are so ugly to me.I slightly prefer Hugh, though.

I like both. I used to only like Hugh, but I've grown to enjoy Hugo these past few months. You understand. ;)Array

Nah, it's actually only about twenty or so, since all the names have to immediately make me think of VFV. Maybe I'll post it when I get home. :)Array

I really like Hugo. My cousin's name is Hugo Anthony. I like it slightly more than Hugh but I've always liked both names.

Love Hugo! Def. better than Hugh.

AgreedHugo was a name that I used to dislike, but I now think is cool in a somewhat sinister way. Hugh strikes me as a wimpy, stuck-up name, I don't know why.

I like both, but I don't love either enough to use (but Hugo would take more guts than Hugh, I think). Also, I prefer Hugh with the "H" pronounced, as opposed to just sounding like the word "you".

I agree; I use the H for both.d

I like Hugo much better than Hugh. But remember some might say "OO-go" rather than "HYOO-go."

Or "YOO-go" :-/ Anyone else remember what a Yugo is? lol

I don't really like either, but I think I prefer Hugo. 1. It's easier to say, 2. It honors the author, 3. It doesn't rhyme with the last name. So, I vote Hugo. :)

I actually like Hugo its catchy :) Hugh is ok but its a little plain to me. Hugo has that extra uniqueness that keeps it from being boring :)
