15-year-old Callie Featherstone is going on an adventure. She is going far away to marry a royal, which will strengthen the ties between the two countries, which are slowly becoming allies after a long war. At first, Callie declined because she was sure her family needed her, but her family insisted that she go, and they would be perfectly fine. So, Callie reluctantly went and was carted away to a far-off country. Soon, the Featherstones realize that this was a big mistake, for Callie was what let their diplomatic meetings never get out of hand. So when Evander gets into a heated argument with another fellow aristocrat, he loses his temper and things get ugly. Afterward, diplomatic relationships start to fall apart, and the family is unsupported. the whole family angrily turns on Evander, who in turn only increases their misery.
Julius is walking past his Uncle Vander(who he likes to call "Uncle Vampire" when his uncle's out of earshot)'s study when he hears his name. Curious, he presses his ear to the door to listen, even though he hasn't done this since he was 12. After listening, he finds out the news that his father had a private wedding and his new wife, who has an 8-year-old son, is going to have a child. Julius is shattered. His father got remarried and already has a baby on the way, along with a son? Julius angrily stomps away from the door and tells his brother and his brother's girlfriend, Norma. then he writes a letter to Callie. Julius doesn't know who to trust anymore, and when he finally meets his father's new family, his rage is gone, but there's still a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach. At least the family is kind and supportive, and when the Featherstones’ new half-sister Arabela(called "Bella")is born, there are no hard feelings.
The Florians, the new extension of the Featherstones, come to live in the manor. One of the Florians, an 8-year-old boy named Leolin who goes by Leo, is searching through a junk pile. He always found interesting things like gold coins in their old home and junk piles of sorts were a common hiding place. This pile of scrap is really old, and it seems that no one has touched it in forever. Instead of finding gold coins or valuable earrings, he finds an old, dirty, leather book with a leather strap. he starts to read. He can't understand a lot of the big words and complicated language, but he got the gist: Somebody's lover claimed to have a baby, but they were false. What could this mean about Leo's dad's family? He decided to keep the diary a secret for now, but maybe when he finished decoding the message, then he might let some people know.
Catching up on current events- Princess Alena was found at the village well, and though she is bombarded with questions, she has no idea who her captor is. The children aren't much closer to finding out who murdered their mother, but all they know was that they found a lock of dark hair in the cellar where she was discovered...the hair, upon further inspection, wasn't Aikaterine's. Callie still hasn't told a soul about her vision, but everyone knows that she's out of the picture since, for one, Callie could never murder her mother for more than one reason, and she had sandy hair. Still not close…Princess Alena and Julius are now lovers, so ties with teh royal family have been strengthed, which was great! Things are really looking up…
