Meaning & History

From the title "Caliph", root khalīfa, meaning "successor" in Arabic. The title caliph was given to the successors of the Prophet Muhammad, originally elected by the Islamic populace, making it an indirect Quranic name.

Other variants include Arabic Khalifa, Muslim usage Kalif and Khaleef, and alternate transcription Khelifa, chiefly used in North Africa.
