[Opinions] Ivy
Forgive me if this name has been posted recently; I am pretty new here. The DH and I discussed this name before, at points I really love Ivy. I like the idea of something flora-related, but not too-overused, nor unheard of. I also like the poetic idea of how ivy climbs, and how you would hope your child would climb and overcome obstacles (though perhaps not so dependently as the plant). What do you all thing of the name Ivy?I would want her to have a longer, more classic middle name...Ivy Isabelle sticks out for me. I wouldn't mind Cecilia, Madeleine, or similar middle feeling names... suggestions always welcome!I also like Rose, a lot, but only as a first name. Do you have a preference for Rose or Ivy?

I've really been loving Ivy lately as well. I love it paired with a hard C/ K middle name, because the sharpness seems to tame the slinky 'v' in Ivy:Ivy Catherine
Ivy Calista
Ivy Claire
Ivy Clara
Ivy Caroline
Ivy Christine
Ivy Colette
Ivy Kate
Ivy Kendall
Ivy Katerina
Ivy Keira
Ivy Kerensa

I like Ivy, though not as much as Rose and not as much as I used to. For a while, it was one of my favorites, but my boyfriend shot it down. He works in the medical field, and it reminds him too much of I.V. He joked that he likes Ivy and Ringer (after Ringer's lactate) as a sibset. I see Ivy a lot on nameboards, but not often in real life. It's been decades since I've met an Ivy, and I'd be happy to meet a little one. My Ivy combo is Ivy Margaret. I agree that Ivy works well with a longer, more classic, middle name.

I don't like Ivy. I prefer Rose. Ivy just makes me think of Poison Ivy or Beyonce's baby Blue Ivy, which like most celebrity names is a horrible name for a child. No offense. I like the idea of the climbing aspect, but I just don't like the name Ivy.

Thanks for the honesty, haha. :) Ugh, I totally had forgotten about Blue Ivy... maybe it was repression.

Ivy is a nice name. I like your reasons behind liking it. I think a longer, more classic middle name is a good thought. Ivy Isabelle is nice. I think I like Ivy Madeleine better. I would also like Ivy Josephine, Ivy Alessandra, or Ivy Rebecca.Between Rose and Ivy, I would definitely pick Ivy.

I think they're both great. And I think your reasoning behind Ivy is really lovely, even if it's not my first thought. Ivy (the plant) has a good associations for me but I know some people hate it. Anyway Ivy as a name is lively and smart, a bit subdued and a bit sharp. I like it. It's maybe more distinctive than Rose, but Rose is beautiful too. Rose is lush and sweet but still has an edge. It's so simple. I honestly can't choose between them, I think either would be awesome.
I also like all your middle names! Ivy Isabelle is cool and the double 'i' works because it's a different sound. Ivy Cecilia is great, I love Cecilia and Ivy grounds it really well. Ivy Madeleine is beautiful too.
So yeah, you don't need suggestions because you have great options already, but I'm gonna give you some for the fun of it. Ivy Clare was my first thought for middle names but it doesn't really fit what you want. Sorry for any repeats, in a bit of a hurry. How about:
Ivy Magdalen (very slight variation, I know)
Ivy Johanna
Ivy Theodora
Ivy Elinor
Ivy Carol
Ivy Marion
Ivy Catherine
Ivy Josephine
Ivy Cornelia
Ivy Kathleen

I used to dislike the name Ivy because it has the Poison Ivy connection too but then I key the cutesest little girl named Ivy Dawn and the image of Ivy in my mind totally changed. It's fairly sweet but withought a lot of fuss, pretty but not over-the-top feminine and would work well from childhood to adulthood. Rose is very sweet too and between the two I do prefer Rose because I'd consider using it for a daughter. Ivy would be easier to make combos with I think and it is less popular than Rose.Ivy Isabelle is okay but the double I names is a bit much. Ivy Madeleine is quite lovely! Ivy Cecilia is okay but doesn't flow well.
My suggestion is stick with middle names that don't start with vowels because Ivy starts and ends with long vowel sounds. What about:
Ivy Florence
Ivy Giselle / Gisele
Ivy Beatrice
Ivy Jeanette
Ivy Charlotte
Ivy Caroline
Ivy Marguerite
Ivy Louisa
Ivy Danielle / Daniella
Ivy Seraphina
Ivy Helena
Ivy Catherine
Ivy Rochelle
Ivy Juliet / Juliette
Ivy Jessamine

Thank you for the advice about vowels... I hadn't quite thought of it in that way.

[sarcasm not directed at you] You'd better hope it hasn't been posted recently. And hope nobody has the impression that it has. Boring the people who visit this board every day is not allowed. [/sarcasm]I like Ivy, too. It's modest and unflowery, but has presence and femininity, and it's about the right level of unusual for my taste. I would not mind being named Ivy, and I'd think it was great if my daughter was named Ivy. However, I'm aware of other people having issues with the idea of poison ivy ... which I guess makes the name seem sort of rockstarrish or sexed-up or just nasty? I don't get that, but it might be enough to stop me from naming my daughter Ivy if I wanted to. Might. Maybe. Okay, it wouldn't - I like Ivy enough that I don't care. But my husband - he didn't like Ivy, probably because of the poison thing, or the IV drugs thing, or the idea of a vine aggressively climbing all over things and covering them up. So ... there it went, off the list forever, probably on the first cut.I also like Rose tons, but it's a little too pretty and "classy" for my style to be honest. I'd pick Ivy over Rose for my own family, but on your kid I like them the same amount.Ivy Madeleine is nice. With some "longer more classic" names from my own list:Ivy Demetria
Ivy Alexandra
Ivy Charlotte
Ivy Marcella
Ivy Jacqueline

I LOVE the name Ivy and would consider using it in the future, if I could get DH on board with it! I also love the name Rose, but I'd probably go with Ivy over Rose. I think Ivy and Rose would be gorgeous for sisters though. As far as combos go, what about:Ivy Charlotte
Ivy Tabitha
Ivy Rebecca
Ivy Elizabeth
Ivy Emmeline
Ivy Annabelle
Ivy Anastasia
Ivy Amelia
Ivy Sabrina
Ivy Sophia
Ivy Gwendolyn
Ivy Hannah
Ivy Josephine
Ivy Jessica
Ivy Katherine
Ivy Lucinda
Ivy Lucille
Ivy Celeste
Ivy Bianca
Ivy Natasha
Ivy Matilda
Ivy Miriam
Ivy Michaela

Ivy Matilda = dream combination. However, I doubt Matilda will fly with him. :( Ivy Charlotte or Ivy Caroline could be honoring for his family though... so maybe!

I'm fairly sure the DH would call many of your picks "flowery," but goodness, I love them. Particularly:Ivy Gwendolen
Ivy Aurelia
Ivy Lilith
&
Ivy Branwen

I absolutely adore the name Ivy!! It's short and spunky so I think a longer, classic middle name would work wonderfully.Ivy Cecilia has a nice flow even if I'm not a fan of Cecilia.I think I prefer Ivy because I never hear it whereas Rose I hear a lot. As a middle name, of course, but it seems like in recent works of historical fiction the heroine is always called either Elizabeth or Rose. So I vote for Ivy!

I understand that. My love of Cecilia/Cecelia stems from a love of Simon & Garfunkle. Rose is a family name for him... and I like the mental imagery I get from the name, but it is much more common, I agree.

Rose is a family name for me as well. Probably for a lot of people. I don't dislike Rose by any means! Cecelia just seems a little eel-ish and slippery for me but I like the "v" in Ivy that evens it out.
