I've actually always liked the name Amber. It was never as popular here in Australia, so that might have something to do with it. I don't find it too hippy at all. I like the combos: Amber Rose, Amber Lee, Amber Katherine, Amber Elizabeth and Amber Celeste.

Every Amber I've personally known has had a smart mouth, but that's just my personal experience. The name is nice enough, though I don't think I'd use it myself.

Amber is a pretty colour and stone, but the name itself doesn't really work for me. There were quite a few Ambers my age in elementary school (they thinned out by middle and high school weirdly enough), and all of them were foul-mouthed and mean.By the time I was in school, Amber was well-established as a lower-class name, and the association with white trash, etc, has unfortunately stuck with me. If it hadn't--if all I thought of was Amber Brown and Alan Moore's daughter (what? He mentions her in the intro to V for Vendetta, lol)--then maybe I'd like it a lot.Amber Tallulah

Its all where you live. I personally have never met an Amber before in my life, that is until I went off to college. My junior year I had a roommate Amber. Before then I really didnt know it was an actual used name. I kind of like it, despite my roommate not being pleasing. It has signifance to me, even though I personally hate word names. ~~Kris~~

I don't see how it could have a bad meaning - amber jewellery is beautiful. (Well, it doesn't suit my colouring, but on other people it is lovely!)It's also too established to be "hippy" imo. It might be rather dated in some places, but it's always been rare where I live, so I don't think of it that way and I like it very much :-)Amber Catherine
Amber Francesca
Amber Gabrielle
Amber Helena
Amber Josephine
Amber Layla
Amber Lilian (I really like this combo)
Amber Marianne
Amber Mirabelle
Amber Sophia
Amber Tabitha (like this a lot too)
Amber Vivian (and this)

You know, Amber was big in the 90s but you don't see any more Ambers around, really. At least not in little kids. All the Ambers are in their late teens/ early twenties now. I find myself liking it more, too. I guess an alternate name with the same sound is Ember, if you get too turned off from Amber.

It's overdone a bitI went to school with a lot of Ambers. I actually really liket he name, even though it has a bit of an airhead stereotype. (I knew an Amber who was anything but that)As for it's meaning: It's not that negative.Combos:
Amber Celeste is cool, if a bit much
Amber Rachel
Amber Miriam
Amber Elise (my favorite)

It's nice! I love the meaning - it's an attractive idea, the warm color and the shiny substance. It doesn't strike me as hippy. It might have been, in the 70s or something, but it's a pretty mainstream since it's been popular for so long. It strikes me as a "spunky" sort of name - kind of like what people are trying for with naming girls things like Tatum and Riley, except Amber is femme, too. It's a not-soft kind of femme. Neat.Unfortunately I've heard it an awful lot in my life, so I have a stereotype associated with it (white middle-class, in her late 20s, basically).Amber Callista
Amber Jane- mirfak

I can see the appeal of this name. It has a pleasant sound and connotation of the color and gem. However, I do get the 80s/90s trendy connotation. A baby now may be able to escape that association, but at first thought, the trendy overused 80s thing comes to mind.

Amber is in no way too hippy! The bad meaning wouldn't bother me if I liked it, which I don't...

Amber is one of those names that has never ranked high on my list simply because it has seemed rather dated to me, rather 1990's trendy cheerleader type of a name. It's not too hippy and it doesn't have a horrid meaning but it's just sort of comon to me. I actually like Amberlyn better. I know two girls named Amberlyn and I just think it's so pretty. Amber would be cute on a little girl but is trendy on a teenager and preppy on a woman. Some combos:Amber Lynn
Amber Rose
Amber Kate
Amber Claire
Amber Jade
Amber Tiffany
Amber Paige
Amber Nicole
Amber Elise
Amber Violet
Amber Sage
Amber Laurel
Amber Faye
Amber Juliet
Amber Jane
Amber Mae / May
Amber June
Amber Skye
Amber Star
