Since adopting
Misha three years ago, life has gone very well for
Ari and
Julia. There was a little bit of a culture shock for the young boy in moving from Russia and the orphanage to the Roth's estate in
Virginia (near
Washington D.C). However,
Misha definitely adjusted well to having a father and mother, as well as two sets of grandparents who cared for him.
Ari and
Julia got permission to take a few extra weeks off of their jobs when they got back to the U.S. to settle
Misha in. He enjoyed exploring the area with them, especially the Air and Space Museum in D.C. and Colonial Williamsburg.
Misha loved learning, so he was very excited when he started kindergarten. He was always willing to show the other agents at
Ari's work or the doctors and nurses (and even patients!) at the hospital
Julia worked at what he was learning. His favorite things to do were science and reading.
When
Misha had just barely turned 6,
Ari heard from one of his old friends in
Israel at the very beginning of the summer. This friend, a single father named
Gideon, wondered if
Ari would like to bring his family for a visit so their children could meet and the friends could visit again. When the Roths arrived, the real reason behind the visit was revealed:
Gideon had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and had very little time left. He needed to ask
Ari and
Julia a very serious question: Would they take care of his almost-four-year-old daughter
Eliora Tikva when he was gone? They did not hesitate to say yes. When they told
Misha, the little boy showed the first sign of being protective like his papa: "Liora'll be sad and scared, won't she, Mama? I'll be brave for her and let her know that it's okay."
Ari took a short assignment in the area and
Julia made arrangements to do some work at a hospital in Jerusalem near
Gideon's home so they could stay with him for his last month and a half. It was good for
Eliora that she was able to have one last birthday with her father around. When he finally passed away, the Roths waited another month before returning to allow
Eliora to say goodbye and adjust to the situation. Back in the U.S., she had trouble adjusting at the beginning.
Julia asked one of her coworkers, a therapist specializing in young children who lost a close family member at a young age, to talk with the lost little girl. So far it seems to be helping but there is still a bit to go. She is very attached to
Misha, who is ever the doting protective big brother.
