[Opinions] Emily: the ultimate compromise name
I was in a class today and the instructor said that she had a daughter named Emily, but she really wanted to name her Nyla (I think that’s what she said) but her husband did not agree. She didn’t like any of his names so Emily was a compromise. Someone else said that how his sister Emily got her name. A third person chimed in with their daughter is named Amelia because they couldn’t agree. The instructor then said something like “if all else fails, just pick a name that sounds like Emily.” Just an interesting story I wanted to share. Any thoughts? Is Emily a name you would love to use, or would you just shrug your shoulders and go “meh, whatever”?

In my case, using Emily would be a sign something has truly gone wrong in a relationship because it's so pedestrian XD I like Emily don't get me wrong but I'd be hard pressed to use it as a first name. If I used Emily I will have offered the wind and sky of the classical naming spectrum before arriving to it in a pitiful state of defeat. My true compromise name would lie somewhere in the scope of unusual but not unheard of in my RL community, which is still fairly conservative but still..

Yess! All the way. I love this name, I don’t not like it’s similarities like: Emma, Amelia and Ember. ♡

I like Emily but I it’s very popular. I would never name my child Emily as a first name because it’s very popular and I think there are much better names out there. Emily seems very vanilla to me. I like Amelia more.

Emily is a nice name regardless. I think couples should discuss names BEFORE having a baby, just in case. When my husband and I were considering having a baby, we discussed names. Each of us picked one girl and one boy name and we made combos out of that. We didn't have children but it seemed like it would work that way.

Nope. I have many names I like and would happily use not out of not having anything else better. Emily is okay, but I wouldn’t name a child that.

I like Emily enough to use as a mn. Before it went viral, I would have happily used it as a fn, but not now. Five Emily people, aged about 13-14 and all in the ssame class of 30 can only be a warning! Emily is a family name, but only as a mn: Florence Emily, in the late 19th century. Now, I'd consider Alice Emily.

Before this, I would've said that Sarah was the ultimate feminine compromise name. I went ahead and looked at the popularity statistics (https://www.behindthename.com/name/sarah/top/united-states?compare=Emily&type=percent) and... well, what do you know, Sarah's popularity took a nosedive during Emily's meteoric rise!Emily "Em" does feel like a compromise name, though. There's nothing inherently objectionable about it (barring the original Latin meaning). It's easy to spell and pronounce. Heck, I might've liked it if I hadn't been burnt out on hearing it so much.Amelia is similar, but I actually like Emily better because it doesn't have "meal" stuck in the middle - though the vibe is similar. I vastly prefer Amalia to both, but that's just me.

Emily isn't a bad name! I don't know, I may use it. I don't think I love it as much as other names, but it's great!

I was nearly named Amelia. And it was a second or third option for my close relative, (they ended up having a boy).
Strangely enough, I quite like the name Emilia, I even consider using it, among other options... It seems 'realistically' pretty and 'extremely' usable.

Emily is an exceedingly good name. I can perfectly understand it's popularity and why it remains common still to this day. It stands the test of time, similar to other classic names that often get used. They're practical and sensible. Then again, I did grow up with a sister named this, spelling and all. So it isn't a name I would really be able to consider-certainly not for a first. .Even if her name wasn't this and was something completely different, I probably still wouldn't use it. As much as I think Emily is a nice name, I do prefer other names over it.
