Re: Names given twice in the Netherlands
in reply to a message by Mar
BOYS:
Avi - I like this. It is simple yet strong. I am surprised only two children were gieven the name. I expect it to have a small boost in popularity in the States since one of the members of Pentatonix (acapella group) has the name, and the group is becoming quite popular. Bear - nota fan. I totally understand that some people see strength in this name, I see Teddys. Curtis - Way more than two children were given this name in ths States last year. I am sure it might seem a little less usual in the Netherlands, but I consider this a very strong name- even if it is a bit old-man-ish. Dana - never liked this on boys. I know it is unisex, but I prefer it on girls... maybe because all of the boys I have met with this name are quite feminine as well. Elvis - Bold choice. But, it is technically still a name despite the Rock Icon attachment. I love that two parents used it. Fox - This is getting some attention in hipster circles. I would be interested to find out how popular it is worldwide - since we can see that it is not so popular in the Netherlands. Glory - Cool name. My first thought would have been girl - but there is no reason it can't be used on a boy. I happen to like this. Hendrick - eh. This name does nothing for me. Indra - On a boy? Hmm. Well it is interesting and a solid name... so why not? I wouldn't use it myself, but I think it's a unique choice. Jean-Pierre - oh, hunh, hunh! Ze French. I like French names... so I like this. It's so stereotypical; I love it. Kei - NOt a fan. I read Koi at first, which would have been cooler. Loki - I am not on this bandwagon, so I am chagrined to see that Loki is being used overseas too, but delighted that only two children have it.
Marly - fan.
Nio - I like t his spelling better than Neo. No idea why.
Orion - It's fine. I am not a huge fan of the sound, but I love celestial names so I can't diss this one.
Presley - As long as this isn't Elvis' brother... this is a cool name.
Qiandro - Hmm. Unique. Sound is nice, but a bit foreign when I say it.
Ron - Only two?
Servaas - Cool. NMS, but cool.
Thaddeus - Love it! Old man name that I find chic.
Ubaldo - Eh, any name with "bald" in it deserves to be questioned.
Volkan - I am sure this is legit - but all I can imagine is Star Trek (and I am a fan).
Winter - Love it! Especially used on a boy. So much cooler (pun intended) on a boy!
Xavy - Nope. NMS.
Yaroslav - Well, this is a fine name for that culture.
Zacharias - Also suprised there were only two. This is my fav of the Zac* names. Girls:
Ambrosia - I secretly love this name. The sound is so flowy... but I prefer Ambrosine.
Bette - Due a comeback in the States. Surprised there were only two, but I approve.
Cora - Another pretty name. I would totally use it myself.
Drew - Never been a fan. But, I do like Dru as a nn for Drusilla.
Everdine - Very pretty. Will have to look this up.
Fabiana - Underused. I like this name, but I have family members with it.
Gertrude - Clunky but adorable.
Hillie - H mm... never really saw this before. It looks pretty, but sounds like Hilly. Eh.
Inouk - So pretty.
Jesse - Oh, I kinda like this spelling for a girl. Unexpected.
Kennedy - My mother's surname. Totally unusable to me.
Leora - On my list!!! But, I spell it the Hebrew way, as Liora. LOVE this name.
Muze (means "muse") - hmm. Interesting. For the meaning, this name lacks personality.
Nel - I prefer Nelle, but this sound is one of my faves for a name.
Odessa - Lovely sound and also underused. Reminds me of Undine.
Paloma - Pretty and underused.
Queen - over the top to me... but it would be foreign to them, so it is fine. I mean... I plan to use Reyna as a middle name, so same thing.
Ria - pretty. Simple, classy. Good choice.
Soleil - Like this word, and decent as a name. Glad to see I am not the only parent who confiscates foreign words to use as names!
Tasneem - Kinda hard for me to say. Pretty, but tongue-twisty.
Ulla - I do like this name... but my brain wants to spell it Uula... which is not right.
Viva - love this! So pretty and feminine and strong in so few letters.
Winnie - Cutesy. Some people love it, and I am delighted to see it in use overseas - even if I am not a fan.
Xena - No. Thankfully only used twice, but soooo nms.
Yip - This made me laugh. But it is a cool name.
Zorah - I am surprised more people don't use this name, what with the x and z obsession these days (merited, as x,z, and va are awesome letters).
