Re: Thoughts on these names
Abel is able: might get some well-meaning but lame jokes "Hey, don't dis Abel". I like Abe and *el names. It's pleasant, though not particularly striking to me. The fact that he was murdered in a famous symbolic story would bug me enough I wouldn't personally use it.Jairus (if it's Jay-rus?) is kind of cool. About like Jaiden / Jared combined with Ferris / Cyrus. I like the sounds, and it's got a positive meaning.Japheth is obscure enough that I'd wonder what the appeal of it was — like, did the parents want Joseph "Jay", but that was too common? Is it a childhood nickname for James V "Jayfifth"? Do they really like Jehoshaphat, but that's too weird, so they saw Japheth and decided, "Oh that's perfect!" — I'm not really sure what to think. It's okay.Boaz has always reminded me of Bozo the clown, plus Beau / Bo (which strikes me as dumb, because I see it as having an idealized/romanticized American Southern Gothic connotation). I don't love Boaz's story in the bible either. It's an interesting sound, though, and the meaning's not bad.Sonny strikes me as being mellow and rural in a mostly positive way.Billy the Kid. Billy goats. It sounds juvenile and annoying to me. I don't even like Bill / Billy as a NN. He might have a brother called Bucky or Chuck or Beau.

Haha, thanks for the feedback! Jairus is jy-rus. Japheth was one of Noah's sons in the Bible, I like the sound of it. I have the same issue with Abel, the whole being murdered thing! I do still like the name though.I'm the opposite about Boaz, I love the Biblical story of Boaz and Ruth.Sonny seems friendly to me. Billy is ok, but I don't think I'd ever use it. It was a name DH suggested last night, as a reference to Billy Graham. I like it for that reason, but seems a bit "normal" next to our other kids more unusual names.
