Gabriel and Seraphina hadn't even turned a year old yet when Queen Kat was surprised by a letter from an old nurusry maid of hers, Nola. Nola had been only twelve when she came, an orphan, to help in the nursury of the Crown Princess Katarina, and the two had formed a bond. Nola had left after Kat's mother died, but they corresponded until just after Gloriana's birth. In her letter, Nola stated that two years before she had married and been abandoned by a man she wouldn't name. She had only tried to contact him again once, after their daugter was born. She had raised little Joss alone for two years, but seh was dying of an inherited disease and knew she wouldn't live long. Nola had no family at all, and no friends who could take her in. She begged Kat, the most influential person she knew and loved, to find a home for her child. Kat and Arthur, after reading the letter, looked at once another and instantly knew they were thinking the same thing. They would adopt little Joss Penelope, and make her a princess of Kriana. She arrived shortly after Nola died with a great deal of both sadness and excitement in her new family. Kat immediately took the steps to have her officially adopted and named a princess, even giving her a more royal name, elaborating Joss into Jocelyn, adding Faith (Nola's middle name she had gone by with family) and Catherine to honor her mothers, and adding Marianna so she would have an M name like her new sisters. Mirabelle and especially Gloriana were excited to get a new sister, and while Gabriel and Seraphina are too young to really know what's going on they obviously love Joss (which they still call her in the family). All Joss's new grandparents, aunts, and uncles adore her. She has had a little more convincing to do with the advisors, who advised Kat not to adopt the girl, just to find her a home as was the usual step taken. They were afraid a peasant-born child in the royal family would cause a huge stir. They were right in a sense, but dead wrong in the other--though the people of Kriana were at first shocked that she had been named a princess with equal status as their beloved Royal Children, they loudly applauded the king and queen for their compassion in taking in an orphan when they didn't have to. After a while, they also thought it right she was made a full princess; after all, did their beloved Queen Kat not love the lowest of her people as much as her highest noble? All in all, things are well; Kat and Arthur have a new daughter, the children a new sister, and the kingdom a new princess they accept.
