Yeah, it shows up in my extended family tree in the late 1800s.
I think it fits ok stylewise with
Leo,
Leon,
Elias,
Silas,
Titus,
Lucas,
Atlas,
Nicholas,
Matias,
Leonardo,
Orion,
Julius,
Luciano,
Theodore,
Thaddeus most of which are in the US top 200 and some on the UK list as well.
I think it appeals to people who'd like
Linus,
Lionel,
Lenny,
Leopold, if those seemed less nerdy/dated/uptight (and to people who like
Leon,
Theodore,
Lucas, but feel those are too average/popular + if they like obvious antique looking names like
Phineas or more romantic looking names like
Orlando).
Leonidas sounds like a rich old dude but also has some swagger. I appreciate that it can seem dignified and has flair and yet sounds a bit novel.
I don't personally like it that much, although I'm not sure why. It comes across as vaguely snide to me, but it's not because of the sound or style. It reminds me of
Midas also (so maybe it sounds grasping?), but I actually like
Midas. Maybe it's just that I've not met one plus associate
Linus and
Lenny and
Titus - I don't like those.
