The crown prince and his wife have given birth to their first child--a son--to the delight of the king and kingdom. Though
Riordan and
Faiza do not have the kind of passionate, romantic relationship that he had grown to expect and she had always dreamed of, they have formed a strong partnership.
Faiza is impressed with
Rio's maturity and work ethic and willingness to learn. He doesn't feel the need to try to dominate her or make up the age difference with bluster, bravado, or force. He regularly asks for her advice and assistance, and he takes very seriously his promise to do his best to make her happy. He goes out of his way to make romantic gestures toward her, is attentive and considerate, and--while not exactly intimidated by her--is very respectful and attentive. And she does not take him for granted. She does not make himself prove his worth to her anymore. She is incredibly supportive of him and truly believes he will make a wonderful king (some day) and father (from now on). When the baby prince was born,
Faiza got to pick two names while
Riordan chose one. Her two names were
Abishai (my father is a gift) and
Malik (king) while his name means poet king. They have high expectations for their new Poet-King-son-of-a-great-man. They spend many long evenings with the baby in front of the fireplace sharing stories or companionable silence.
Faiza doesn't know it, but
Rio's been very nervous that this brother
Owen will come back and take
Faiza away. He hopes, now that the baby is here, that will never happen.
Little does he know,
Faiza is the last woman on
Owen's mind. For the past few years,
Owen has been working as first mate to a merchant-sailor-turned-pirate, Fitzlan, who is now trying to regain his official status. He's a very wealthy man, and quite influential, and an impoverished but influential duke in Erur (where
Fitz is from), is willing to help get
Fitz back in the king's good graces if
Fitz will marry his daughter. Erur agrees, though he's practically in love with someone else, and sends
Owen to take care of the details. But the girl is
Owen's age, and she's too shy for
Fitz, not at all his type. And, besides,
Owen likes her very much. So he tells her father that, as the 2nd son of a king--he's heard about Riordan--he's in an even better position to bring wealth to the dukedom if they can all agree that
Owen and
Caoilfhionn will marry and that
Fitz will be reinstated. The duke has agreed, so now
Owen and
Caoilfhionn are on their way back home to get
King Michael's...blessing.
