Bellatrix is a beautiful, stunning name.
Bellatrix Lestrange is my favorite Harry Potter character and I would definitely name my kid that.
I love the meaning, don't get me wrong, but the spelling is weird.
A strong name, but with Lestrange as a namesake, I wouldn't recommend naming a child this.
Just doesn't look well, like two different names are tried to stick together, but it just doesn't seem a stable name. Too much. Too ridiculous. I don't like it.
It's really pretty, though for an actual girl I'd use the Russian form, Беллатриса (Bellatrisa which is what the star is called and the character in Russian), or maybe Italian Bellatrice. It seems more wearable and therefore a less *obvious* association to the character (though she is awesome).
Awesome. Like Bellatrix from Harry Potter. She was my favorite character besides Hermione.
I love the name Bellatrix despite the Harry Potter villain. It's quite pretty. If I have a daughter her name will be Bellatrix Rose (not after Rose Granger-Weasley). Her nickname will probably be Bella or Belle.
It’s a very nice name in my opinion.
Cool, spunky name for a Harry Potter fanatic. Love the meaning.
Hmmm Bellatrix?!? Sounds ok.
Nah. All the comments with a negative rating have my reasons.
Reminds me of The Matrix.
This is honestly a really pretty name. Bellatrix LeStrange is my favorite female villain ever!
Personally, I love the name Bellatrix. Bellatrix just sounds so different and fun and and actually pretty. I do not exactly like that it is associated with Harry Potter, and I know that the character is violent and crazy, but the fact that the character was evil and insane makes me like the name a little bit more, I think. Maybe I am just a weird person, but I think Bellatrix is a wonderful name.
Bella, Bell, Trixie, Trix, Ella, and El Are Possible nicknames. I like Trixie best.
Bellatrix is a pretty, strong, and elegant name, and personally I don’t hate Bellatrix Lestrange.
In my honest opinion, it looks and sounds ghetto. I've never been a big fan of names that have "bella" in them though. I think I'll pass on this one.
Cool name for a fictional character, horrible for a real person. The meaning is too violent and I'd never give a child a name that has the word war in it. The association with the Harry Potter character isn't great either. She was insane, sadistic, fanatic and the bad guy's little pet.
This name looks and sounds atrocious.
Bellatrix is a pretty name. Sad thing about the association with Bellatrix LeStrange.
I actually really love this name, but the association with Bellatrix Lestrange is far too strong for me to ever encourage its use. I adore the Harry Potter series and Bellatrix Lestrange is one of my favorite villains of all time, so I myself probably wouldn't be able to resist making a few cracks at a girl named Bellatrix. I'm horrible, I know, but I do mean it when I say I love the name.
It is actually a great name- I would know, it is my name and I actually love it. My grandfather named me and it wasn't until I was older that I found out the meaning. Every time I tell someone my name they tell me "Oh ooh what a great name, I've never heard of it, it's nice and different." Until this day, I still have not met anyone with my name. And I was super happy when I graduated high school being the only one with my name. So thanks to those who said great things about my name. It's nice to know others like it as well. Oh, and for those who think that oh no, you got that name from Harry Potter, I was born in 1993 and I was named before the movie came out. I knew it was the name of a star and I found it pretty cool that they used it for a movie.
When I read Harry Potter, I thought the name was sinister. And for good reason, because Bellatrix Lestrange was an evil character in the series. However, as I look at the name more, it is actually quite an elegant name that I might consider naming someone if not for the books. Believe me when I say that I'm a fan of Harry Potter, but it just ruined names for future kids because of its popularity and use of rare names. Besides the books, Bellatrix means warrior (it might do good as a middle name though).
I love Harry Potter and I didn't immediately think Bellatrix Lestrange when I read this. Granted, it's been a while since I've read the books, but I think only hardcore Harry Potter fans would make the association. The name itself is not one of my favorites, but it's alright.
Bellatrix is a gorgeous, elegant, distinguishing name. Sure, it'll be forever associated with a psycho character who was passionately devoted to serving her Dark Lord. Most of us fans still like her, despite her evil Death Eaterly deeds, for being so interesting and "cool." Aside from that one specific person... the name itself is fantastic. I love Trix/Trixie and Bella for nicknames (Bella may be hideously overused for dogs, which is why I call our family dog "Bella" Bluebell instead, but I've heard of very few human Bellas. All that comes to mind is the Twilight girl, but I'd rather just forget about her.)
I didn't realize this was a real name. It sounds made up and sort of ridiculous.
It's very distinguished and beautiful. I first heard of it on this site, where I learned it is the name of a star.
Then I read Harry Potter. Great books. Bellatrix is a great villain character. However, the name has literally NO other association. J.K. Rowling was possibly the first to use it as a name for a (fictional) person. It would be cruel to give it to your daughter, as of now. I know you're not naming her hoping she'll be like the character, but put yourself in her shoes: "Mommy, where did my name come from?"
And the only one in a book/movie, anything with your name is a sadistic, snobbish, fanatic, completely evil b****. I know the parent could say, "Every person makes their own name, just because someone else evil has your name doesn't mean you will be evil." And they would be right. But I think it would still be very hard to grow up with. Here's an idea: If you really love this name, as do I, and you're an author, don't give it to your daughter. Give it to your character. Your awesome character who's nothing like Ms. Lestrange. Publish your book/screenplay and you CREATE that other association. That's what you could do for the name, and it seems many people here would thank you.
Harry Potter's a cultural phenomenon. It's not going away. The Bellatrix Lestrange association will follow any child with this name for the rest of their life, whether the parents think it should or not. It's not a bad name (although both Bella and Trixie are disgusting nicknames), but Bellatrix Lestrange is an awful character (she's a good character, but a really bad person... you know what I mean) and associating your kid with her is not a nice thing to do.
I don't care if this name means Female Warrior. All I can imagine is a drugged up stripper who emotionally abuses her kids and opens her legs for every man who looks her way. If I ever come across a little girl who has the unfortunate burden of bearing this monstrosity I will immediately think her parents are trash.
This name just screams "My parents have no money or education" I mean, are you kidding me? Why whould you name your little girl something that belongs on a drug addicted, stripper? There is nothing strong or graceful about this name at all! It is ugly and hideous! The name Bealltrix is proof on how dumb parents get at naming their children. Hard, solid proof!
Person above me:
What the heck? Where did you get that from?
It means female warrior in latin, to me that gives it a strong meaning, really, what about this name makes you think of THAT?
Its very pretty. And I'm sure you'd automatically make friends with all harry potter fans with this name! :P.
Its a cool name and honestly I wouldn't know about the name if it wasn't for Harry Potter. Also I love it more because of harry potter because I always love the villain, they're the most interesting character and they stir things up. Plus more people now know how to pronounce this right.
I love the meaning!FEMALE WARRIOR...
Lovely.
I adore names starting or ending with Bella, as you can see from my user name. This name is beautiful, mysterious, sophisticated, playful and everything else I want in a name. It also has a strong meaning. I would name a daughter this, if it weren't for people too stuck onto the the association of this name with evil. A name should not be notorious unless it has been borne by a real person.
I love the nickname Bella. It does not remind me of Isabella Swan in the slightest, as one commenter wrote above. She was a weak character. Why should I allow someone so undeserving of such a strong and beautiful name ruin it for me?
I don't think JK Rowling ruined the name, Bellatrix.
I think a lot of Rowling's audience care more about the quality of the character instead of if they're good or evil. One of the best examples of this is Severus Snape. Throughout the series there's conflict about if he works for Dumbledore or Voldemort and that's what people like about him: he's a complex character with a bad past.
I'd say the same with Bellatrix Lestrange: she's very complex ranging from her obsession over Voldemort to her love for torture. She's interesting and it's easy to like her character, but hate her as a person.
So, in conclusion, Bellatrix is a good, strong name.
It sounds like a combination of Beatrice and Bella?!?! I don't like it because it sounds drunk...
This is a gorgeous name. However Harry Potter wrecked all interest I ever had in the name. Grr. Bella is a pretty nickname, but now I'd never use Bellatrix. :(
Ruined by Harry Potter.
Harry Potter is awesome, and so is Bellatrix Lestrange, but really, don't name your kid this, unless you want her to be teased. It will always make people think of Bellatrix Lestrange the insane serial killer.
I adore this name: it's beautiful, unique, meaningful and not a bit boring. I'd name my daughter this in a heartbeat. I grew up wishing my name was something common like Lauren or Vanessa (there were FOUR Vanessas in my eight grade class). Now I love my unique name. When it comes time to name my children, I will lean more to unique, different, even strange names--but ones that are not too out there.I couldn't care less that JK Rowling used it for an evil character! In fact, I've read the series and did not remember Bellatrix Lestrange until I read these comments.I agree that Bella has been done to death but there are other sweet nicknames you can get: Bell/Belle, Trixie.
I wouldn't name a kid Bellatrix just for some dumb movie that'll be over (thankfully) soon. It always makes me think of the rabbit in the Trix commercials and/or a crazy psychopathic chick with no life.
I love this name. It's so pretty.
Bellatrix in Harry Potter is my one of my favorite characters and I'm far from "Emo." I'm quite girly actually lol.
I'd love to use this name on my little girl for a middle name.
DO NOT name your daughter Bellatrix. She's going to be teased at school.
This is a strong but lovely name. For nicknames, I choose Belly. It's not the Twilight-riddled "Bella" or the awful "Trixie."
I used to think it was plain weird, but it grew on me. Now I think it's charming, but still too out there for me to use.
This name is gorgeous and UNIQUE. Thanks to JK Rowling, it will probably NEVER rise in popularity! I would name a person this, it is a bold, dignified name with boatloads of spunk. Bellatrix Lestrange, although being evil, was a fantastic character in the Hrry Potter books, hands-down my favorite villainess, maybe even my favorite Harry Potter character.
And to those who say Harry Potter will be forgotten about in years to come, you are sorely mistaken. The HP novels are well on their way to becoming classics, and I'm sure they will still be read (and the movies watched) thirty to fifty years from now.
I personally love this name. I still intend to give to a daughter someday, despite the Harry Potter books (which I love, by the way) and not because Bellatrix Lestrange is my favorite villainess, but because it's a really strong name. Its meaning is really special and it's a very unique name, which can define a person and make her memorable. Besides, the nicknames Bella or Trixie are great!
Very pretty and strong sounding, but I don't think it would fit a little girl. I like the character in the Harry Potter books, even if she is evil, so I don't think she ruined it.
Nickname Bella is absolutely beautiful and Twilight will be forgotten very soon cause it's horrible and uncool movie. And full name Bellatrix is just gorgeous, and in Harry Potter world this name belongs to strong and magnificent woman. I like it.
Its a nice name but sadly. Twilight has ruined every single name with "Bella in it for me".
This only works on a fictional character, IMO- not just because of Harry Potter. It gives off a dark fairy theme.
I don't think or care about Harry Potter when I hear this name. I think it sounds ugly, pretentious, and like a name that cult members would name their daughter. Astronomy names don't really work well on humans.
By the time I have kids, Harry Potter will be forgotten about. :) It's a beautiful name.
The nickname Bella has been done to death, and Trix or Trixie just makes me think of a dog or a prostitute. Also, one can't really say that the Harry Potter associations could be overlooked. They can't. This is an extremely uncommon name for a person and most people of childbearing age today have only this association to go on.
The Harry Potter books ruined this name for me.
You people can sometimes really be so silly. What does it matter if Bellatrix is one of the characters in Harry Potter? I even haven't read all the books and know people who haven't read any of them and surely do not know who Bellatrix L. is. Please, do not ever ever again use a name mentioned in some book. Do you see how ridiculous this is? I think it a pretty name, never mind for bellum.
I like it because a nickname can be Bella or Trixie!
Seriously, don't let Harry Potter get in the way of such a beautiful name. Sure, the first thing people think of when they hear this name is "Harry Potter," but personally, I don't think it's a bad thing. The Harry Potter association may stop people from saying, "Bellatrix? What kind of name is that?" when they hear it, because they've already heard the name.
This name is such a beautiful variant of Bella. Isabella is so popular, but with Bellatrix you can still get the nickname. I find it spunky and cute, too bad though that Bellatrix Lestrange was so evil! Oh well thought, I don't think that matters much.
Hehe it does sound like a fairy's name! So devious and sneaky with a dark side. Although it is pretty it's still a bit weird to use on your kid these day, no offense.
Sounds like a night worker. Trashy. Cheap. And druggie.
I think this is a beautiful name. No, she wouldn't have a nickname. I don't care about Bellatrix Lestrange; I didn't even know she existed until now! Who cares if she is evil anyway, what does that have to do with your kid? Bellatrix spells.Beautiful

I rather like this name, even if 'Trixie Black was evil. It's a decent name, has a nice ring to it, and the nickname Trixie is coool. And by the time I have kids the insanity that is Harry Potter will probably have died down, sooo....
Bellatrix is a simply beautiful name that reminds me of a gorgeous and mysterious enchantress.
This is name for a fairy :) so beautiful and charming. It is never used in our country, but it would be pronounced as bell-ah-tree-ks.
Oh, please don't name your daughters this. Firstly, it screams Harry Potter.
Secondly, it screams "emo kid who thinks that Bellatrix Lestrange is just misunderstood".
Thirdly, it means warrior. Yeah, it looks like a cutesy little mix of Bella and Trixie but bellum/bella is Latin for war. Kind of an agressive meaning to hand down to your kid, war-wreaker.I would be really embarrassed to be named this or have it as my middle name, it would be like having a lightning scar tattoed onto your forehead at birth.
I only like this name on hookers and drag queens.
This name is both cool and pretty, but admittedly a bit ''artistic'', if you get my drift. However, I wouldn't use this as a first name, as I would NOT want the name to be shortened to the cutesy, girly, soap character-ish Bella or the hideous, dumb-sounding Trixie. It would be a spunky middle name, though.
This name is really pretty, but it seems a little too complex and "fancy" to actually name a child. It might be all right as a middle name.
I absolutely adore the name Bellatrix. So beautiful and mysterious.
I don't think J. K. Rowling ruined the name Bellatrix. I'd never heard of it until I read the Harry Potter books. Now I think it's a really cool name!
I love this name. The spelling is unique, the meaning is strong, and it's used in my favorite book series (Harry Potter). The most common nickname I've heard is Bella, but I've also heard Trixie used.
GORGEOUS NAME! Pity about the Harry Potter stigma though.
I don't know why you lot go on about JK ruining it - I think using it was the best thing JK could have ever done for the name. More people are aware of it, and Bellatrix being an evil character hardly puts me off - I love the character anyway, so I see no fault in that. My friend's gonna name her future child Bellatrix, just because of the character.
This name has an elegant, sophisticated ring to it, although, now having been used for an evil, slightly gothic character in the Harry Potter books - which really ruins it - has a darkness about it. Spooky.
I personally do not care for this name. I don't really care for Beatrix either but I like Beatrix better than this. I think the cereal Trix has ruined it for me because everytime I see these that's what I think. The sound is ok but the spelling just ruins it.
I like the name moderately for what it is, but the Bellatrix Lestrange thing (most awesome evil lady) makes it both a better name in my opinion and one that I am less likely to ever doom a girl to.
This is such a lovely name. Too bad Bellatrix Lestrange has to be so evil. I think I like this more than Beatrix. However, using it as a child's name is probably not a good idea, at least not until the Harry Potter phenonemon dies down.
I love this name! Although it has been ruined by the character in the Harry Potter books.
I like it but would feel bad naming my daughter this because of the comments she would most likely get about Harry Potter. It is a very dark, beautiful, and complex name like the character though.
No offense intended to anyone but I really don't like this name. It is a bit of a mouthful to say.
I like this name. This is my first time seeing it and my first impression of it was not so enthusiastic, but looking at it I like it. I especially like the two nicknames: Bella and Trixy, those are cute. And the meaning is fantastic.
I don't really like it actually. Why not just Bella, which is so much prettier?
I love Bellatrix with the nickname Bella, even taking into account the Harry Potter association; to me it sounds beautiful, playful, and strong.
It's a shame J.K. picked this as her evil character's name, because it has a certain amount of appeal.
It's such a shame that J.K. Rowling 1. Used this name in Harry Potter and 2. Made Bella such an evil character because if she hadn't I could have used it! It's such a beautiful name!
I know most people turn to Bellatrix Black when they think of this name, but I hope that one day its reputation will die down.
I absolutely love this name. It's simply a beautiful and sophisticated name. I also love the fact that a nickname could be "Bella" which is another simply gorgeous name.
