What are your favorites & least favorites from my list?
Can you tell me your top three favorites and three least favorites from my each of my lists and why? I just want some feedback on my lists, see how everyone feels about them. I'll be specific on how I pronounce them, but I'm really bad at phonetic spelling. My girls list: Zoe, Veronica, Selene (seh-leen), Thalia (I pronounce it Thal-lee-uh, but I know everyone pronounces it differently), Magdalena (mag-duh-lee-nuh), Adeline (add-uh-lien), Alice, Cleo, Isadora / Isidora, Phoebe, Natalia, Amelia, Felicity, Willa, Sibyl, Corinne (co-rin, not ca-reen), Coraline (Cora-lien), Tessa, Iris, Cassandra, Chloe, Jane, Evangeline (ev-an-gel-een) & Althea. My boys list: Dimitri, Gregory, Tobias (to-by-us), Jason, Augustus, Jude, Jordan, Charles, Orion (oh-rye-un), Walter, Samuel, Leo, James, Luke, Silas, Joshua, Felix, Asher, Andrew, Aaron, Perseus, Cassius (I pronounce it Cass-ee-us, but I don't mind the Cash-us pronunciation and go back and forth on it), Jasper, & Demetrius.I hope the pronunciations didn't just confuse you more. If you have any questions please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Girls Faves: Veronica, Natalia, Cassandra -- All are elegant, classic and feminine without being too frou-frou.Girls Least Faves: Sibyl, Phoebe, Cleo -- All are just unattractive to me. Also, Phoebe reminds me of the word 'feeble.'Boys Faves: Leo, Gregory, Andrew -- These are handsome, strong and masculine. They're very appealing.Boys Least Faves: Silas, Felix, Perseus -- These are unattractive to me in sound and are a tad pompous.Overall Faves: Cassandra and Leo

Girls favourites:
Natalia - I've loved this forever
Tessa - so simple and wonderfully underused
Corinne - I have a soft spot for a lot of two-syllable names with the accent on the second syllable (Janae, Renee, Joelle, Narelle, Nadine, Simone) and love the nn Cora.Girls least favourites:
Isidora, Sibyl - don't like the sound
Cassandra - bad associationsBoys favourites:
Jasper - so endearing, since Road to Avonlea days
Felix - spunky and adventurous - actually also a Road to Avonlea association
Silas - simple, Biblical, solid, groundedBoys least favourites:
Dimitri - too Russian thug
Augustus - Gloop. willy wonka reference
Perseus, Cassius, Demetrius - all too over-the-top for me

3 faves: Alice, Cleo and Phoebe
- I just adore all three names and all are on my PNL too. I just find them all gorgeous, love the look and sound of them and the meanings are all really nice too.3 least faves: Sibyl, Corinne and Althea
- None of these names grab me really. When I hear Sibyl I just think of the show "Fawlty Towers", which is not a bad thing, but the name just doesn't impress me. Corinne is not that bad, but a little lack lustre imo. Althea is just nms.
3 faves: Jasper, Felix and Asher
- I love all three of these names and they are faves of mine. Again, all are on my PNL too and obviously I have a little boy with the name Jasper.3 least faves: Demetrius, Perseus and Walter
- Just nothing special in these names imo. They're just not for me.

JaneI just like all three and think they are sweet, simple and charming names which should be used more often. :)3 least favourites:Phoebe - I really dislike the 'fee bee' sound, it reminds me of the word feeble

Amelia - soooo popular and common where I'm fromTop 3 favourites:Samuel
Luke
JamesLove all three, they're handsome, strong classics3 least favourites:Orion - I know a really annoying Orion

Favourites: Willa, Althea and Coraline. For the boys that would be Orion (I have a son named Orion, though we pronounce it differently), Jude and Asher. Least favourites: Sibyl, Corinne, Jane and Dimitri, Walter and Jasper.

How do you pronounce Orion? I'm really bad at phonetic spelling, so we may pronounce it the same. I would love to meet a little Orion!

We pronounce it OH-ree-on. But we live in Belgium, so we don't pronounce it like English speaking people would.

Three favorite girls:Veronica---I just love most girls names that start with a V. There's something so sleek and sophisticated about the letter. Veronica is a sleek sophisticated name.Cassandra---I like the crisp first syllable prefacing the soft next two syllables. And its roots in Greek mythology.Evangeline---Probably too many religious overtones for me to ever actually use, but's it's so pretty and has a nineteenth-century vibe, which I like.Least favorite girls:Phoebe---Horrible sound. FEEE-BEEE. I just can't see the appeal.Amelia--There are reasons that I should like this, it's classic, it also has a nineteenth century vibe, it ends in IA, which I generally really like in a girls' name, but that "MEAL" sound in the middle makes me hate it.Willa---Ick. The very masculine Will with an A stuck on. Ugly and clunky and I just can't imagine a pretty Willa.Favorite boys:Cassius---Handsome, masculine, strong, and ancient. Not one bad thing about it.Luke---I've always liked it. Also handsome, masculine, strong, and it's to the point.Samuel--You can't go wrong.Least favorite boys:Tobias: Weak and whiny. Toby is even worse.Jude---Ugh ugh ugh such an unattractive syllable. I hate Judith and Judy for the same reason. Just ugh.Jasper--Always make me think of a greenhouse full of fragrant blooms, which may not sound like a bad thing, but in a male name I don't find that desirable, just not strong, weak, you can walk all over a Jasper. Yet at the same time, has an evil vibe. No.

Favorites : Charles, Leo, James/Alice, Natalia, JaneI like Charles because it is tried and true, regal, and lends itself to nicknames. I like Leo for family reasons, but I think it has a good, solid sound to it; I have a fondness for names that end in the long O sound. I like James because it is one of the sweetest names in the world. It sounds so bright-eyed and innocent.I like Alice mainly because of "Alice In Wonderland". I think it's solid, but slightly whimsical. I like Natalia because it's very dark and beautiful. I like Jane because it's no-nonsense and surprisingly pretty.

Favorites:
Magdalena (I say it mag-duh-LAY-na)
Jane
IsadoraAugustus
Gregory
WalterI don't actually love any of the girl's names, but I love several of the boy's names... like more than 3, so it was hard to make a top 3!Least Favorites:
Selene - seems frilly and weak
Zoe - seems flimsy and airheaded
Coraline - seems obnoxiously fringe-trendyJordan - negatively dated
Jude - too trendy
Perseus - I just don't like the Percy sound, in any name

Favourite girls:
Magdalena
Felicity
AltheaAll three (or their Swedish equivalents) are high up on my own list. So are several of the others, so it wasn't easy to just pick three. I love Thalia, Alice, Cleo, Isadora/Isidora, Phoebe, Natalia, Willa, Tessa and Evangeline too.Favourite boys:
Samuel
James
FelixI also really like Dimitri, Leo, Silas and Aaron.Least favourite girls:

My favourites from your girls list:
1. Cleo - I absolutely love this one. I prefer Clio, but Cleo is great too. I like the meaning behind it and it looks cool and sounds nice.
2. Veronica - I just like this name. It sounds and looks very cool.
3. Natalia - This is such a pretty name. I like again how it sounds and looks. My least favourites:
1. Sibyl - I don't like how it sounds. For me it just isn't that pretty.
2. Cassandra - I'm not sure why I don't like it, I just don't. It isn't honestly that bad but it just doesn't work for me.
3. Magdalena - I don't like how this one sounds or looks. But there are many nicknames for this so it isn't so bad.My favourites from your boys list:
1. Luke - It is simple but great. It sounds nice.
2. Leo - Same with this one.
3. Jasper - I like this one. It sounds cool.My least favourites:
1. Perseus - I can't stand Perse names cause in Finland Perse=Ass.
2. Cassius - Again Finnish kills this one cause it sounds like the word "kassit" which can mean bags or balls.
3. Joshua - I've just never liked how this sounds. And I don't care for the nickname Josh.

My favs from your girls:
Alice - I've always thought this to be classic, and all of the Alices I know are really nice people.
Adeline - though I prefer Adelaide personally, I still like the sound of Adeline.
and... Either Amelia or Althea - Amelia is my little niece and I know its really popular but her name has grown on me. Althea is also sweet and a lot less popular with still a nice sound, I like the nickname Thea.Favs from boys:
Tobias! - Love this name sooo much, it's definitely top dog on my own list.
Asher - another one from my own list, I love the nickname Ash and think Asher is a better way to get to it instead of Ashley or Ashton.
and James - this is on my list as a middle name because I have a cousin with the name. It's classic and I like the nickname Jem for it or just James on its own.And my least favourites:
Chloe - this was popular around the time I was born so I went to school with a lot of Chloes, strangely none of them were very nice, it went slightly up in my expectations when I met a young twinset of Chloe and Sophie who were very sweet but I still don't like it much.
Cassandra - This name just seems too much, too much what I'm not sure, but it doesn't appeal to me.
Sybil - It screams old lady for me and I don't like how it sounds generally either.
Jasper - Again I think it's quite an old name and I don't like how it sounds, the "sp" sound in the middle grates on my nerves and reminds me of the word wasp.

Top three girls:
Alice, Tessa, Jane
B team:
Felicity, Iris, Chloe
Potential tweaks:
Magdalen (shorter and more usable than Magdalena)
Emily (shorter and more usable than Amelia)
Coralie (less adjectival than Coraline)Top three boys:
Gregory, James, Charles
B team:
Tobias, Walter, Joshua
Potential tweaks:
I'd prefer Gregor to Gregory
Dimitri and Demetrius on the same list are unexpected - are they really so nice?
Leo is abrupt and ambitious; Lionel could work with Leo (Lio?) as a nn

I'll comment on those I like/dislike. Those I'm not commenting on I'm neutral about.Veronica - Never liked it. Sounds like Victoria's ugly sister. Plus, it's dated where I live.
Thalia - I like it, and I pronounce it the same way you do. I like Talia and Tahlia too, but Thalia is probably my favorite spelling.
Adeline - Sweet but classy. I like it.
Alice - It's in my top three, I love it. It fits all types ot women/girls. It's sweet for a little child, but has attitude for a grown up woman.
Isadora - another one of my favorite names. I only like this spelling though.
Phoebe - Nice! Not much to say about it other than I like it
Amelia - Like it!
Felicity - Like it. It's a lot nicer than one of my middle names, Felicia.
Sibyl - How old is she? 120? No way.
Corinne - Dated, ugly.
Coraline - I like it but I do think of that movie...
Tessa - Nicknamey, and bad associations.
Evangeline - Gives me the same vibe as Isadora. I don't like it as much, but it's still nice. Dimitri - I have a soft spot for this name.
Gregory - NOOOOOO .
Tobias - Bad associations. I just can't see why people like this name, to me it's like naming your child satan. But...Toby is sweet.
Augustus - Awesome
Jude - Love it. Too bad I can't use it since it's the Swedish word for 'jew'. I wouldn't name my child Kristen (Swedish for christian) either.

I tend to have reasons for why I dislike a name but not why I like it... favourites:
Felicity, Alice, Iris
Augustus, Leo, Asher
Least favourites:
Cleo - great name for either an Egyptian pharaoh or a cat, but it just seems silly on a person.
Corinne - Cor-een is pretty, but Curin is ugly to me.
Sybil - I actually do like this, but it seems like a pretty in a vaccuum name and not as great in real life. My prevailing association is the Sally Field movie. Perseus -this only works for Percy Jackson because he's not real.
Jordan - This name screams 80s! And I just don't see the appeal.
Joshua - I find the sound of Joshua awful, it's all squishy.

Don't say that about Percy Jackson! I love him. His books inspired me. PJO is a touchy subject. =)
Thanks for your input!

For your girls I love Corinne, Iris, and Evangeline. They take a little effort to pronounce (as opposed to being entirely "liquid") without being harsh / "macho."For your boys I love Jude, Leo, and James. I like simple boys' names.

Favorites: Adeline, Natalia, Amelia. I like all three, as they are all very sweet, very feminine, and quite lovely sounding names.
Least favorite: Willa, Sibyl, Cassandra. I think all three are very blah sounding...and I also feel they are extremely dated, without the classy sound that some older names have.
Favorites: Gregory, Jason, Jude, Luke, Joshua, Jasper...omg. I love too many, sorry can't pick just three. All are such handsome and classic names, not extremely trendy so that you want to roll your eyes and say, in not again... But so adorable.
Least favorites: Dimitri, Walter, Orion, Perseus. Dimitri, don't like the sound of it at all. Walter, too old and quite ugly sounding when I say it. Perseus and Orion, just a little weird for me:)

Most: Amelia, Selene, CassandraThese are just favorites of mine. Most of your names I actually like, but Amelia is a top favorite of mine, Cassandra is my sister's name, and Selene is just gorgeous. I think the three of them are sophisticated and beautiful.Least: Cleo, Sibyl, and IrisCleo still makes me think of that silly late-night psychic mumbo-jumbo, Sibyl and Iris are just plain ugly and old fashioned in a bad way to me. Most: Augustus, Tobias, JasperAugustus is a top favorite of mine as well (well, August names in general), Tobias nn Toby is adorable and a fave, and Jasper is nice (though I prefer Jesper and Jesper is on my top faves list).Least: Dimitri, Walter, SilasDimitri is too foreign and unpleasant to me (but I don't like most Russian names tbh), Walter is an old man's name and nothing more, and Silas is ugly to me and sounds like a villain's name.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "that silly late-night psychic mumbo-jumbo". Could you explain?
You are the second person that said Silas sounds villianous. That's interesting.
I love Augustus too (love Gus!) and Tobias is awesome. I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think it is really cool. Thanks for your comments!

There used to be these late night commercials for a 'Miss Cleo' ( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Cleo) when I was a kid. The whole thing was clearly a scam and it made me dislike the name Cleo a lot. Not to mention she was prolific enough that there's still plenty of folks out there who know about her and would associate her with that name strongly. As for Silas--while I can't reference anything specifically I want to say there's been quite a few books, movies, and tv shows with bad guys named Silas and it's uncommon and distinctive enough that that association remains. I'll try to think of some specific examples lol

Top three girls:
Cleo - very cool, I really like this
Zoe - short and sweet, interesting but familiar enough that it's not hard to spell or pronounce
Third would either be Alice, Iris or Jane - I like all 3 well enough, they are sweet and classic names.Top three boys:
Leo - I really enjoy this, it's my nephew's middle name. Another cool one
Asher - really like this, and the nickname Ash
Orion - brings a lovely image to mind, makes me think of space and the stars. Has a nice familiar sound to it, due to the popularity of "Ryan".Bottom three girls:
Felicity - I *hate* the sound of this. It's lispy and weird to me! But seems to be well liked by others.
Sibyl - I don't like the sound of this much, and my mind also jumps immediately to the book 'Sybil', which isn't the best association to have
Veronica - I'm not a fan of the sound of this. It sounds harsh and very old-lady like...not in a fresh way like some of the older names that are coming back into fashion (like Iris)Bottom three boys:
Silas - I can't really explain my dislike for this name, it just sounds kind of slippery and unlikable to me
Jason - very dated. It's the middle name of my oldest brother, but I'm not a fan
Walter - kind of cute, but I think it's a little heavy for a child. I don't really like the nickname Wally either.
vote up1
I've heard before people saying Jason is dated, which I suppose it is, but Jason has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. It sucks that so many great names get overused and then dated. I don't think Walter is any heavier than Frederick or William, but I can see what you mean, since it is a mature and older sounding name. I wouldn't use Wally, I'd probably use Walt if I needed to. As for Felicity, I have childhood associations, but I know it isn't everyone's taste. I know the Sybil association is bad, but I don't think so many people in my generation know about said book/story.
Thanks for your input! It was really helpful.

Isidora, Willa, Sibyl, Corinne, Tessa, Jane, Chloe
Dimitri, Jordan, Orion, Leo, James, Asher, Andrew, JasperThree least faves:
Felicity, Evangeline, Coraline
Tobias, Felix, WalterZoe - to me this seems so versatile. It's modest, ageless, classic, not too sophisticated and not too simple, not too feminine but enough.
Veronica - The sound of this name just does not appeal to me personally.
Selene - is neat, although I don't find it striking unless it is Se-LEE-nee.
Thalia - I say Thal-ee-uh. It's nice - I think it's a little prissy in real life, maybe. I heard someone calling her daughter Talia (TAL-ee-uh) "Tally" at the park and it was unappealing imo. I prefer Dahlia (which I prn more the way you say Thalia - Dah-lee-uh)
Magdalena - seems kind of overbaked or European for my style. The gd is heavy. But I think it's a good classic name.
Adeline - personally I don't care for the addle sound in Adel-names. Also this sounds old-ladyish to me. It's not a bad name, I just don't like it

You were really thorough, which was very helpful. As for Thalia, I pronounce it the same way as you, I just wasn't sure how to write it phonetically. So thanks, I changed it on my post. Your post had some great points, so thanks for your help!

My personal favorites are Althea, Cleo, and Sibyl from the girls' list and Cassius, Walter, and Augustus from the boys' list. I particularly adore Althea, which is a truly underrated beauty!
vote up1
I totally agree about Althea being underrated and beautiful. And it has so many nn options. I love Cleo & Sibyl, but I have a hard time finding anyone else who does.
Cassius, Walter, and Augustus are old but not too dusty sounding with pleasant nn options, which I love; but I find with Walter, you either love it or hate it. Augustus has some negative associations for some people and is definitely an acquired taste.
Thanks for your input!
