Amaury ... Awkward, complex yet too casual. Amalric is better.
Amos ... perfect, adorable.
Amyas ... looks awkward.
Avery ... passé
Dmitri ... I'm done with this name.
Elias ... It's okay. Slightly intimidating.
Finbar / Finn ... tired.
Hadley ... trendy
Hardy ... no
Haydn ... cheesy way to honor the composer. Just use Franz or Josef
Hector ... love it.
Ilya ... Are you Russian? If not, no.
Ingo ... no
Ira ... It's okay, a little whiny.
Ivo ... love
Jonah ... good
Lennart / Leonard ... Leonard, yes. The other one, not so much..
Lucian ... not my thing, but not a disaster either
Otto ... it's good
Quinn ... meh
Rafferty ... awk
Raleigh ... trendy
Renard ... awk
Ridley ... trendy
Robin ... great!
Rupert ... good
Tobias ... good
Valentin / Valentine ... it's too frou-frou
Viggo ... no, it's too associated with LOTR and anyone who names their children from Tolkien-related things risks being labeled dorky
Walter ... maybe, probably no.
Winston ... no.

I had no idea Viggo was used in LOTR! Thanks!

Viggo Mortensen is the actor who played Aragorn in the films

Here is my opinion on your names. Don't feel offended or anything, I'm just honest and of course, it's my personal opinion. My favorites (starting with my very favorite and so on):* Elias - LOVE this one! One of my favorites!
* Valentin / Valentine - really like this one! Has a great meaning! Prefer Valentin though since the -e in the end makes it somehow feminine.
* Jonah - really like this one! Would love to see it to be used more often
* Amos - lovely meaning and a very soft, but still masculine sound! I'm not the biggest fan of its Biblical origin, but okay...
* Finn - like it, but a little sallow
* Ilya - ok, again very Russian, but I like its sound... prefer Elias or Elijah though since it sounds more masculine to me
* Quinn - I somehow like this one... probably only as a middle name, but still
* Winston - I somehow like this one. A nice middle name, I suppose
* Leonard - I like it! Sounds noble, but not aloof. And definitely not overusedOK are* Amaury - doesn't sound too masculine, and quite foreign... maybe too foreign?! A great middle name in my opinion!
* Amyas - interesting, but a better middle name, I'm thinking... wouldn't Amias be another option, too?
* Avery - a little boring to me
* Hadley - not masculine enough to me
* Ivo - ok, but not as a first name... looks like a nick name or an abbreviation
* Lucian - I like its looks, but I'm no fan of the LOO-shen pronunciation
* Ridley - don't really know what to think about this one... probably ok as a middle name

Why would I be offended when I asked people to rip the names to shreds? :P Thanks for being so thorough. I'd use the German pronunciation of Tobias - no BIE involved.
vote up1
In this case I'm perfectly fine with it :-) .

Amaury - "uh, Maury?", amorous
Amos - not one of my preferred biblical names. sound fusty
Amyas - awkward to say and displeasing ending 'yas'
Avery - nice, but possibly being taken over by the girls, so may be seen as feminine by some
Dmitri - sounds whiney
Elias - okay
Finbar / Finn - 'bar' is a weird-sounding ending to me, and a fin is on a fish
Hadley - more a girl's name now
Hardy - hearty and thomas hardy who honestly, was depressing though a good writer
Haydn - c'mon
Hector - ugh. hate the sound!
Ilya - starts off with 'ill'. not a good sign.
Ingo - is this indigo? inigo? igor? toss it out.
Ira - obnoxious and fusty
Ivo - sounds like a brand-name for an Italian facial cream
Jonah - word association = whale. i just think of a person who makes bad decisions
Lennart / Leonard - i've always hated Leonard
Lucian - lucius malfoy
Otto - auto-immune disorder
Quinn - pretty unisex now, so if that bothers you remove it
Rafferty - weird last name to use as a first, reminds me of taffy for some reason too
Raleigh - are you related to sir walter? no? then ditch his moniker.
Renard - foxes are awesome, but....jerk kids might see r...ard and make a joke about a not nice and politically incorrect term for people with varying levels of mental ability
Ridley - awesome, though i'd use it also for a girl b/c of the character. keep this one.

Hearty =/= Hardy in my accent :P You've made a lot of reference that either aren't relevant to my area or don't bother me, or I plain don't know (divergent?), but thank you for bringing them up. Thank you!
vote up1
I should have said that I live in the US in case there were cultural references. Divergent is a book by Veronica Roth & movie that's very popular with the teenagers. Well, and many adults too. It's very hot right now/yesterday.

I really like Ridley and Robin. I love August! August's two brothers for me would be Elijah and Micah =) Or Micah and Robin.

Thank you! I really wish Elijah was more uncommon :(

I only like\tollerate: Avery, Dmitri, Elias, Finn (by itself) Jonah & RobinRubert, Tobias, Walter & Winston: meh

Like the most:
Robin: I love Robin for a boy either as a nick name for Robert or on its own.
Amyas: Nice, it sounds like it would make an excellent name for a hero in a knightly quest. I added it my own list just now.
Dmitri: One of my favorites although I can never decide on the best spelling.
Ivo: Short, strong, fun and not overly used
Lucian: Smooth and enduring like a well tailored three piece suit in the best sense.
Raleigh: a name ready for adventure and perhaps a little mischief Like:
Finn/ Finbar: I really like Finbar as the full form of Finn. It makes me think of a hero from Irish lore.
Ira: a nice name that always makes me sadly remember the lack of appreciation that Ira Hayes and many other returning soldiers experience.
Quinn: nice enough
Elias: Good solid name with history
Haydn: I like it when I think of Joseph Haydn, but it is becoming ridiculously trendy where I live.Okay/Tolerable:
Rafferty: Alright. Inexplicably, I want to use it a rhyme. Raphael can also use the nick name Rafe and is less surnamey.
Amos: This name has really grown on me of late. In a story of mine, it is the name of a wise, elderly Appalachian man of Merlin like aspect with nature magic abilities.
Amaury: I love the flow and romantic feel, but it reminds me of now girl names Aubrey and Ashley. Upon first hearing it, many people would assume Amaury was a girl.

I thought similarly about Avery, until I checked the popularity in the UK and it's not in the top 500 for either gender, so I think it might be doable here. Thanks for such a detailed response!

I like/love:Amos
Elias
Finn
Jonah
Lucian
Otto
Quinn
Rafferty
Robin
Rupert
TobiasAs for two brothers for August, I like the sound of August, Felix and Kit. Using names from the above list, I like August, Robin and Amos.
vote up1
Thank you! August and Felix would be especially darling, I love Felix, but it's so popular here :(

Amaury --Nooooo. This may not be an issue in the UK but it's 100% Maury Povich, AKA the host of the world's trashiest TV show.
Amos --Anus.
Amyas --Not sure how to pronounce this. AM-yas? ah-MY-as? AM-ee-is? In any event I like the look of Amias much better, but am not a big fan.
Avery --I would not consider this usable on a boy in the USA, but I don't know how it's perceived in the UK. I do like it in theory.
Dmitri --Love it, possibly a bit odd if you're not Russian.
Elias --I love this one too, as long as it's uh-LIE-as and not uh-LEE-as.
Finbar / Finn --Finbar is so weird to me. Like...a bar made of fins? I don't like it. I don't care for Finn either but it's better than Finbar.
Hadley --Blech, no. Tryndee and surnamey.
Hardy --The hard jokes would be NEVERENDING.
Haydn --Pretentious as sin.
Hector --I want to like this but it just makes me think of heckle.
Ilya --I want to like this too but it's irredeemably girly to me, even though I know better.
Ingo --Never heard of it, not sure how I feel. It could maybe grow on me.
Ira --Nah. Stodgy and grumpy.
Ivo --Seems incomplete.
Jonah --LOVE, this is on the list for our baby together. ;)
Lennart / Leonard --I hate Leonard. "Nard" is such a fugly sound. Lennart is very slightly improved, but not by much.

Amaury - hard for me to say.
Amos - old fogey name, musty and churchy
Amyas - seems to fit in, modern styled ... such an ambiguous prn though. AY-mee-us? a-MY-us? a-MEE-us? I only find the last one appealing at all
Avery - random pretty surname more common on girls nms
Dmitri - cool
Elias - similar to Amyas but more forgettable by far
Finbar / Finn - annoying
Hadley - see Avery.
Hardy - too evocative.
Haydn - without the e it's pretentious
Hector - I like it. Seems Hispanic (where I am anyway)
Ilya - cool ... if he's Russian.
Ingo - I don't know how this sounds when said correctly, it might be cool, but in my accent it's really not great, kinda Ringo minus an R.
Ira - I kind of like it
Ivo - I like it. ambiguous prn tho. I say EYE-vo
Jonah - I know a Jonah who's 9. Don't really care for name - it's marshmallowy
Lennart / Leonard - Leonard is ok. Le Nerd? Leonardo seems less clunky and more fashionable. Lennart is downright dorky
Lucian - I like it
Otto - alright. bit hipster but I like it ok.
Quinn - better as a girl name IMO, sounds too much like queen for a man
Rafferty - cartoonish
Raleigh - stuffy. rather Rollo
Renard - eh. ok
Ridley - cartoonish, GPish

I bounce back and forth between IE-vo and EE-vo for Ivo, I can't make my mind up on it. Thank you! I'm liking the idea of Silas but I'm not sure I like it enough.
vote up1
I don't like any of those names; I just don't like how any of them sound. I do somewhat like August, probably not enough to use it though.
vote up1
Well, thanks anyway!

Amaury - I'm not sure if it's because of someone I met or a book I watched or a film I saw, but I have such a negative feeling from this name. The name itself is okay, but I have this mental image of a psychologically-abusive chauvinist with weird ideas about women and I have no idea why but it ruins the name a bit for me.
Amos - elderly, conservative and behind-the-times. The kind of person who uses early 1900s cultural norms in the 21st century. Fusty, dusty, and not cool enough to become cool once again.
Amyas - weird. Kinda mystical and fantastical sounding. It makes me think of some elven soothsayer in a high fantasy novel. Kinda cool in that way, but maybe less cool on a person. Might be a good pet name. Interesting enough to make me click on the link.
Avery - eugh, hate. Not appealing on either gender, trendy and boring but not attractive enough to me to justify why it's trendy.
Dmitri - love. Such a cool name. That is all.
Elias - kinda cool. It could be the name of some Hemmingway-esque manly man outdoorsy woodcutter type... or the name of the milksop who was bullied by everyone in school. It depends on the bearer, I think. It has a bit of a macho vibe but a lot of wimpiness as well.
Finbar / Finn - Finbar just makes me think of a bar for Finns. It's nicely Irish, not some Irish weirdly-trendy adopted-by-non-Irish-people name, but it's not my style. Finn is trendy and pop culture faddy but I think it's really cool. I know a dog called Finn and he is a great dog, so I especially like it as a pet's name. I guess Finn could be a nickname to make Finbar less odd seeming.
Hadley / Hardy / Haydn: Yeeessh, no. I don't think these would age well at all. I kind of really dislike them.

I googled Otto, and it's Gemran slang for "good" or something cool. Could be worse, perhaps. Thank you!
vote up1
Sorry, I'm from Germany, but I've never heard of this before. It may be a slang word, but in this case it stands for something big. I think this goes back to Otto being an extremely popular and common name over here.
There are a few other (more negative) meanings to it, but nothing that is applied very often. So no worries. But since you don't seem to live in Germany, I wouldn't care too much about this anyways.
vote up1
I'm in the UK, so I find it weird that you think Robin and Valentine are unusable here :P(I'll reply to you and others more thoroughly in the morning!)
vote up1
Weeeellll...I might have gone overkill on Robin. Robin wouldn't be too bad. I've never really come across the name - I possibly know people who know who got drunk at parties with people called Robin, but it's safe to say I've never met or dealt with in person or on paper an actual Robin, ever. I guess I find it hard to picture in real life, which makes me find it less useable. Anyway, the Batman reference, the cute little fat birdies... maybe unusable is a strong word, but they'd go through life with those same old jokes and references. Valentine. Totally unusable. I think it'd be just as bad as Romeo or something. I just think they'd be teased from the ages 5 to 25, and maybe beyond. I mean, I knew kids with perfectly normal names who got awful nicknames from them... there's adding fuel to the fire and then there's adding, I dunno, napalm? I mean, it's the same reason why I love Titus and I'm a huge Gormenghast nerd but I'd walk over hot coals before I actually used it as a kid's name. Valentine and Titus and the like, okay on paper - not so great when you think of how the real world might react to them.
vote up1
I think you might be right about Valentine. Sigh. But I've met a handful of Robins and Robyns and they've never seemed to have an issue with it.
vote up1
Agreed - I know 2 male Robins and a female Robyn and I've never heard a Batman or bird reference to them
vote up1
For brothers to August I'd go with Frederick and Leopold. My favourites from your list are:Amaury
Hector
Ivo
Leonard
Raleigh
Valentin
WalterLeast favourites:Hadley - seems trendy
Hardy - a kid named this might get teased for having 'hard' in his name
Haydn - it's better than Hayden, but nms
Rafferty - seems celeb trendy
Ridley - don't like the 'rid' part
Tobias - don't like the 'bias' part, or Toby as a potential nn
Ira - makes me think of the IRA
vote up1
Thank you! I do wonder if the IRA tie is too strong.

I'm not sure either. I considered it for our son and I thought it was usable, but my husband said it wasn't. And now I'm not sure. It's still on my list though.

My top ten from your list are:
Finbar / Finn - I love the nickname Finn, though my preferred full name is Finley or Finnian. Finbar is still cool and charming, though.
Tobias
Otto
Winston - The literary connection to 1984 convinced me on this name.
Amos
Lucian - A perennial favorite of mine because of its unusual and classic sound.
Elias
Jonah
Raleigh
Quinn - I'm not usually one to like unisex names, but I like Quinn as a male or female middle name.My least favorites are:
Amaury - Not a huge fan of the sound.
Haydn - I realize that this is for the composer, but I fear that this name would get lost among other Haydens / Aydens / Braydens. You could definitely still use Haydn if this doesn't bother you, though.
Rafferty - It's the name of a chain restaurant in the US, but this may not be a problem in other countries.
Hardy - Bad personal connection for me, and its use as an adjective bugs me.
Valentine - It's a good name, but the connection to Valentine's Day might bring some teasing to a child.Overall, you've got some great names on this list. I adore your taste in male names! Also, brothers to August would be, from my personal favorites, Jasper and Dominic.
vote up1
Thank you! I really like Jasper, but I'm not feeling any of the names I really like.
vote up1
Amaury - I find this strange to see and say
Amos - see above
Amyas - see above, I think "Am..." names for boys are just not for me
Avery - I like this for a girl
Dmitri - very nice
Elias - nice
Finbar / Finn - Finbar just makes me think of crowbar and rebar. Finn is nice though
Hadley - nms
Hardy - I just think of the Hardy boys. I don't see the appeal as a FN
Hector - this has been growing on me a lot lately, I might add it to my list!
Jonah - nice
Lennart - I quite like this. Nicer than Leonard I think but I adore the nn Lennie
Lucian - very nice
Otto - cute
Quinn - nice. I like this on a boy
Rafferty - I really like this but DH is not a fan
Renard - very nice
Robin - I have some bad personal associations with this one
Tobias - very nice
Valentine - feels feminine to me
Walter - feels like it's making a comeback
Winston - I just associate this with the dog on the insurance ads
