This is also a Christian name, AU. Seems like you’re a bit confused. Watch Ted-ED’s YouTube video on the subject of world religions. Everyone else, chill. This person obviously doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
This name makes me think of three things. 1) I have a foster cousin with this name. He is 2 months old and very cute. 2) Aaron Burr, who shot Alexander Hamilton. 3) “You done messed up, Ay-ay-ron!” From the Substitute Teacher sketch by Key and Peele. I really like this name.
What the flip?! What kind of a name is this? Ælfswip (I had to use a p because the letter isn’t on my keyboard) is going to get so many mispronunciations if you name your child this. I can just see it: Teacher: May? May: Here. Teacher: Jake? Jake: Here. Teacher: *hesitates* Ælfswip: here!
This name made me laugh SO HARD. It looks like it’s pronounced AY-dle-pride. The only reason I would name a child this is to see the horrible butcherings of it when their teachers take attendance.
Amber Gray is a Broadway actress. Gray portrayed Hélène Bezukhova in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, a musical adaptation of War and Peace. She is currently playing the role of Persephone in Hadestown,
This is really sweet! I would say I’m pleasantly surprised, but my aunt Andrea goes by this (I call her Ta- long story). Also Andi Mack- love that show!
Angelica Schuyler Church was an American socialite, sister-in-law of Alexander Hamilton, and influenced early American politics through her friendships with Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and other politicians of the day. She is a principal character in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton.
Pretty, but with the Marie Antoinette association, I’m moving right past this one. It’s a shame it can’t be used anymore, though. To me it’s sort of like Maybelline.
Bambi is one of so many pretty names that have been ruined by association. Others are Maybelline and Antoinette. Bambi’s a little cutesy, but it would be fine if it wasn’t for the deer movie.
Funny story about this name: I had a friend named Beatrice in 2nd grade. (I’m only in 6th so I remember it vividly.) She went by Bea and I called her Beatrice for the longest time. One time she just said, “Can you call me Bea?” This was like a month before the school year ended, so I only called her Bea till the end of June. I never saw Bea after that and it just strikes me as funny now.
I’m not a fan of B names in general excepting Belle or Bella, but this name is... wow. Just no. Especially if you’re Jewish. This is what we call the place where a rabbi goes to talk or lead in prayer in synagogue. It’s spelled Bimah, but there’s not a huge difference.
Brennan Lee Mulligan is an actor, writer and comedian. He won $50,000 on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and later went on to become dungeon master for the DnD series Dimension 20. He's also the co-creator of the comic Strong Female Protagonist.
Camellia is one of the six Belles in Dhonielle Clayton’s novel The Belles. She is the narrator of the story and prefers to go by Camille. She is selected as the Favorite of the corrupt Princess Sophia of the fictional kingdom of Orléans.
This is definitely something I would use on a future daughter. It’s so feminine and sweet. It makes me think of a tall, willowy and blond girl in a flannel nightgown, perhaps from Victorian times.
The reason I think of this as a feminine name is because I used to watch this show called Ever After High. It was for young kids and it was about the children of fairy tale characters. Pinocchio’s daughter was called Cedar Wood. Mine does not seem to be a popular opinion, though!
If you’re going to name your daughter after a Les Misérables character Cosette is the way to go. She’s the only girl that lived through the play... I’m not crying...
I like this much more than Elizabeth. Don’t get me wrong, Elizabeth is a perfectly good name. This is just so soft-sounding and beautiful. A lot like Caroline in my opinion.
Enid Sinclair is a character in the 2022 series Wednesday, based loosely on the Addams Family. Enid is a roommate and friend of Wednesday's, and is played by Emma Myers.
Just so everyone knows, this name has absolutely nothing to do with the name Eponine. Eponine is French and Epona is Celtic. I could be wrong; I’m not sure if Victor Hugo really liked the name Epona and just made up a French version for a character. To the best of my knowledge, though, the names are not related.
This is a wonderful name, but I wouldn’t use it for fear of the nicknames. Nina isn't so bad, but in the musical the character is called "Ponine" and it’s a short step from that to Panini.
This name is super pretty. Very feminine and all, but I couldn’t use it because of that one vine:Guy: what’s your name? Superhero: my name is... Evan. Guy: Evan? Superhero: Evan... Essence. If you like vines, this name is not for you.
Ooh, this is an interesting name! I happen to think Euphrasia is prettier and more exotic, but this is a good form of it. The Les Miserables association makes me like it more than I probably would, but it’s still cute.
This is such a sweet name! This website isn’t the first place I’ve seen it though. My mother’s friend and her husband named their daughter Fiorella a few years back. Later they opened a restaurant and named it Fiorella as well. I’m not sure Fiorella suits their little girl as she is a feisty little thing and definitely not a “Little Flower” as her name suggests. They call her Fio. This is one of the most beautiful Italian names out there.
This is ADORABLE. I read this book called My Dear Hamilton and there was a character named Philip and they called him Flip. He was a minor character but he was fun.
This is the name of a character in Avatar: The last Airbender. Hama is from the Southern Water Tribe and only appears in one episode (The Puppetmaster).
There have been five consecutive generations of men named Hamilton Fish in New York State politics. The current owner of the name, Hamilton "Ham" Fish V, is a writer, producer and entrepreneur who thankfully only has daughters.
Isn’t this the name of a character in War and Peace? I don’t know, this is what I call her but various translations have also called her Elena, Yelena, Helen or Ellen :-)
This is not a good name. I’m friends with a kid named Hiram. He’s really unpopular, and it might have to do with his name. Great kid, though. Just goes to show the name doesn’t always make the person.
The myth of Ianthe didn't involve her intentionally falling in love with a woman. She fell in love with Iphis, who was born in a female body but raised as a boy. Iphis asked the goddess Isis (or Hera, depends on the version) to give him a male body so he could properly be with Ianthe, a wish she granted. I'm not against a lesbian interpretation of the myth (I'm an lgbtq+ person myself), but there are many other ways to read it. Also, you may want to think twice before giving advice to homophobes.
I am in love with this name. I would say it’s underused but that’s what makes it special. It reminds me of the name Ebony for some reason. The meaning, “Love Again, ” is just as beautiful.
I hate this name even aside from the Ivanka Trump association. I think it’s less dumb than Gertrude, but still dumb. I would totally use it on a pet, though. That would be hilarious.
I personally love this name. I once used it in a Les Miserables fan fiction. It reminds me of a cheeky teenage boy who is a flirt, steals food from people, but is a good guy deep down. And for the record, it’s pronounced ZHOCK.
What a classic French name! Being absolutely in love with France, the French language, and French culture and names, this name is just the best name in my mind.
Jenna Hunterson is the main character of the Broadway musical Waitress. Jenna is a waitress at Joe’s Pie Diner and an expert at pie-making. At the beginning of the play, Jenna finds herself pregnant. Her husband Earl is emotionally and verbally abusive, and Jenna has an affair with her doctor, Dr. Pommater. Jenna is a kindhearted and determined character, and I think the name suits her very well.
I like this name a lot. I think biblical names are always cool, even if they’re not from such a good person. Jezebel is pretty! And you can use/have it without getting bashed! Period! The fact is it’s a nice name.
I think this is super cute! I don’t know why it’s getting hate. I would name a daughter this. It’s not an obvious literary reference (which I don’t think make good names) but an English teacher might get it and think it was cute.
Josephine “Jo” March is an autobiographical character in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Jo is the feistiest out if the four heroines, with a hot temper and a fierce love for her sister Beth. She marries Professor Fritz Bhaer.
Reminds me of the line from Les Miserables: You talk of battles to be won, yet here he comes like Don Juan, it’s better than an opera! NOTE: in this line, Juan is pronounced ju-WAN, not the traditional HWAN.
When I first heard this name, I thought “wow, what a crazy Russian name.” Then I learned a) It’s Belarusian and b) It’s incredibly pretty. I have a good friend with this name and she is an awesome person. Very lovely name.
I know this is old but I'm commenting because it's going to bother me to no end: Avatar Kyoshi is a character in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Her name is spelled Kyoshi, not Kiyoshi. And she wasn't born on Kyoshi Island! It was named for her because she created it with earthbending. Suki was born on the island, so that may be who you're thinking of.
This name’s not the prettiest name I’ve ever come across, but I still want to name my daughter this when I have one. In my opinion, Lilith is the coolest character in the Bible and the first feminist. Ever since finding out about the biblical Lilith, the name has improved significantly in my opinion.
Mai from Avatar: The last Airbender made me love this name! Although it is funny that one of the meanings for this name is "Genuine affection," as that's kind of the opposite of Mai's character :)
Marcus Junius Brutus was one of Julius Caesar’s best friends and one of his principal murderers. Brutus, though like a son to Caesar, did not regret his actions, saying that they were for the good of Rome.
Maria Reynolds was Alexander Hamilton’s mistress between 1791 and 1792. She married James Reynolds at fifteen and had two other marriages to men whose names I do not remember. She is a minor character in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton. EDIT: Maria, in this case, is pronounced ma-RYE-ah.
This is a very sweet name. I especially like it in pairings, such as Annemarie or Rosemarie. To me it’s the classic French feminine name, with Pierre being its masculine counterpart.
Marlee Tames is a secondary character in Kiera Cass's Selection novels. In the last two books, her name is Marlee Woodwork, for reasons that I will not spoil.
Maybe it’s Maybelline! Seriously though, this name is super pretty compared to Mabel or Maybelle. I wouldn’t use it because of the brand (which goes without saying), but it’s a shame this can’t be used anymore without bullying/teasing.
I don’t particularly like this name, but I have a friend named Mila. She’s very funny, but “gracious” or “dear” are not what comes to mind when I think of her.
Tubman’s real name was Araminta Ross. Minty was a nickname. She changed her name to Harriet Tubman upon arriving in Philadelphia after escaping slavery.
Montague “Monty” Navarro is the central character in “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” a Broadway musical. After figuring out he is a member of the upper-class D’ysquith family and ninth in line to inherit, Monty begins to murder all the relatives who are in line before him. The play ends with Monty being convicted of murdering the one family member whose death he has nothing to do with.
This is a great name! It’s a little overused but it’s wonderfully old fashioned. It makes me think of a poor but happy 19th-century farmer in overalls and a straw hat. This is also the name of my crush, so it also makes me think of a loud, slightly silly guy with cutely crooked teeth.
It’s not my favorite but I don’t think it’s trashy. I actually thought it was a biblical name when I saw it. It sort of is, considering it’s heaven spelled backwards. Not great, but a good name.
Not quite a "famous" bearer, but Nikola Orsinov is a character in Rusty Quill's The Magnus Archives. She's a sentient plastic mannequin who serves as Season 2's antagonist.
This is my best friend's name! I guess that's why I don't think of Noa as a masculine name, since my friend is a girl. The meaning of this name (motion) fits Noa especially well, as she's very energetic and hyper.
Strega Nona is a children’s book by Tomie de Paola about an Italian witch. She has a magic pasta pot and uses it to make, well, pasta. It’s a really cute little book.
This name makes me laugh- a bit because I like the musical Hadestown, and a bit because it reminds me of Oreos. In all seriousness, this is not a good name.
This name is super pretty, and the meaning is so cool for a goddess of spring (although some versions state that she was more of a death goddess herself)!
I love this name. I think it’s very cute. However, I agree it doesn’t age well. I might be biased because one of my favorite book characters is named Polly. Sweet character, sweet name.
My middle name is Rose and I think it’s just lovely and classic. My dad named me this because of his friend Robert. He died in a car accident before I was born and my dad wanted to honor him by giving me a middle name that sounded like his name. Apparently Roberta just wasn’t going to cut it.
I personally love this name! I wouldn't use it on a daughter, though. Not because of the queer associations, but because it's so strongly associated with a historical figure that I admire deeply, and I don't want to put that kind of pressure on my kid. Might use this on an original character, though!
Even aside from the Hamilton association, this is a beautiful name that I would definitely use on a child. It sounds so Shakespearean, and almost Dickensian.
I think this name is absolutely beautiful. Vivian is so common. I know at least three Vivians and a Vivienne. Viviette sounds so absolutely bewitching to me. It could be a name for a pretty little girl with a witch for a mother. Or a young, spirited lady in Victorian times. Beautiful. I don’t see why it’s getting so much hate.
