[Opinions] Laura
I used to love the name Laura when I was a child. It reminded me of Laura Ingalls Wilder and it had a very pretty sound to it. Over the years, I've sort of fallen out of love with it. I have a few questions, because I feel like I could like it again. Do you like it, are you neutral about it, or do you hate it and why?
Do you feel its dated?
What "feel" or "vibe" do you get from it (for example, pretty, ethnic, ugly, classic, trendy, etc)?

I like Laura very much. I like the timelessness of it, the way it looks and the meaning. What I don't like about it is that it feels very ordinary. Nice, but ordinary. I don't really get a certain vibe from Laura because I've known several who were quite different. It's definitely classic. It's definitely a less common choice at the moment. I think of Laura combos from time to time and yet when the name appears as the topic on one of these threads, I'm not wowed by it. That's probably the biggest problem I have with the name.

Boring and rather ugly. I've always disliked it:0)

I think it's really pretty. It's short and simple, but not too bland.I don't think it's dated. It's less popular than it used to be, but I still see it as a classic. It has a classic, international vibe.

I love it and would have loved to use it, but it just didn't fit. There are very few Laura people in South Africa - plenty of Lorna, Lauren and Lorraine ones for some reason. I think it's a very pretty name without being over-decorative, and it sounds friendly and pleasant.

I hate it but that's because of a very bad personal association. I knew a horribly mean bitchy Laura in middle school. Even thinking of her now makes me want to punch her horrible bitchy face. When I was in 7th grade, we moved and I went to a different school, so I didn't see her again for a long time. When I did, it was seven years later and both she and I were 19 and it was in a bar, she had the effing nerve to insult me to someone else that night, which I overheard, and I then went and bought a beer and poured the entire thing over her head. So you see it's a very bad association LOL.Yes, it's dated. Up until about 1990, I would have said that it's not dated and will never be dated, since it had maintained basically the same level of popularity for 110 years. But if you look at its statistics, you can see that it started dropping around 1990 and has been dropping ever since and this accelerated around 2000. It's gone down the "dated" road, no doubt.I get a mean bitchy vibe from it, because of reasons already stated LOL

I like it, it is pretty, but it is my sister's name so maybe I'm biased. My sister hates it though. She says she hates the sound at the end. And no I don't think it is at all dated. My sister is 18 and I know several other Laura's between the ages of 18 and 22. Every now and then I come across a Laura in the birth announcements section of a national paper (in England).

I always have liked Laura. It's pretty much timeless though it isn't used as much these days.

I dislike it, I've got some bad personal associations with the name. I've actually never met a nice Laura, and I've met many.

I used to like Laura a whole lot more than I do now, but I still like it. It's a nice, classic name, and I like the Laura Ingalls Wilder association. I knew quite a few Lauras growing up, most of these Lauras were "Laura Elizabeth," which is pretty but predictable. The name doesn't excite me, but I'd be happy enough to meet a little Laura.

I lovelovelovelovelove the name the Laura. A lot. I think it's a versatile name that can work on any personality. As another user said, it has a classic and international vibe. It's been used for generations, so I don't see how it can be dated, even if it's falling in popularity. I think it's like Emily. It might dip in popularity for a while, but it will rise again. A dated name to me conjures the image of a certain age group. When I hear Laura, I have no idea whether the person in question is a newborn or a grandmother or a teenager or a middle-aged woman. Personally, I'm reminded of the Canadian heroine Laura Secord and the Canadian chocolatier, confectionary, and ice cream company named in her honour.

Yes, I quite like Laura. The feel of it, for me, is warm and friendly and nature-loving. From your categories, "pretty" and "classic" are how I would describe it and, since I consider it classic, I never have felt it dated. I suspect the average person on these days street might call it dated, but I don't see it that way. For me, the classic names are timeless.

I like it, but in a neutral way. It's not dated. I mean, I am aware that it was used more when I was little than it is now - but I don't think it has that "mom name" feeling that a name like Kimberly or Nicole begins to take on now. It still sounds youthful, and I can't imagine it ever seeming any more old-lady-ish than Clara or Rose did when I was a kid. It's too classic.I think it seems so ultra-classic that it's sort of ordinary seeming, like Julia and Katherine and Mary, but it has less glamor than those. I get a feminine, pretty, very sane and reliable vibe from it.

I'm neutral. It has a pretty sound and I know some lovely Lauras but it doesn't really excite me much. This is one of those names for me that I would never used myself but would be really happy if I met a little girl with this name.I don't think it's dated. I think it would be cute on a little girl.
Well it reminds me of this one girl. She's 22, she has straight blonde hair, is very petite and tiny. She has good style, is very smart, always seems to be pretty happy and loves life. So not a bad image I guess.

I like Laura very much. I proposed it when I was pregnant, but ran into a problem. My husband, who was from Texas, pronounced it completely differently than I did. He said something like LAWR-uh and I said LORE-uh. I didn't like his pronunciation at all; it sounded so "wrong" to me. Well, we never had a girl anyway, so, problem solved.I don't think it is possible for it to be dated. Laura is a classic in the same way that names like Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah are.To me, a Laura is pretty and delicate, but has an unexpected inner strength.
