Re: Spelling survey
in reply to a message by Lily
My turn:Which is your favorite spelling of these names and why?HAY-lee - Hayley, it makes me think of hay, a lovely golden color and a nice smell.
KAY-lee - Kayley, it just looks right to me, probably because it's similar to Hayley.
CAR-lee - Carly, most familiar, doesn't look too trendy.
KATE-linn - Caitlin, this is really pretty. I'd definitely spell it with a C.
KAY-linn - I don't really have one. If I had to I'd spell it Caelin.
AL-i-sen - Alison, the original and looks much better than Allison.
JAY-den - Jadon, a biblical name with a history.
KAY-den - Caden, it looks less trendy than versions that include a Y.
HAY-den - Hayden, definitely.
AY-den - Aidan, definitely.
KATH-rinn - I guess Katharine.
bree-ANN-a - Briana, even though I prefer it pronounced bree-AH-na.
ZO-ee - Zoe, definitely.
Mak-AY-la - Mikaela
MAD-eh-linn - Madeline. I know three Madelines who all pronounce it MAD-eh-linn so I find it weird when people say MAD-eh-line. I've asked them if anyone they've met has ever pronounced it MAD-eh-line and they said no one has ever tried to pronounce it that way. Which other spellings of these names do you find tolerable?HAY-lee - Haley and Hailie. I guess Hailie because I have a friend named this, otherwise I probably wouldn't like it.
KAY-lee - Kaley and Caley, they look like surnames and not so trendy. Kaylie isn't horrible either but I dislike it.
CAR-lee - Carley is the only other spelling I kind of like but Carlie and Karly aren't horrible.
KATE-linn - Catelin and Cateline (even thought I prefer it pronounced differently). I also find Kaitlin, Katelin, Katelynn and Katelyn tolerable but not pretty.
KAY-linn - none, except for maybe Caelinn. But not really.
AL-i-sen - none, really. I mean Allison and Alyson would be tolerable, I just strongly dislike them.
JAY-den - Jaden. Jayden isn't that bad but I don't like it.
KAY-den - Cayden
HAY-den - none
AY-den - none, I know Aodhan is the original but it would be such a pain to live with in the US.
KATH-rinn - Catherine, Catharine and Katherine.
bree-ANN-a - Brianna
ZO-ee - I don't think Zoey and Zoie are horrible but I don't like them.
Mak-AY-la - none. I can't stand Michaela even though it's the original. It makes me cringe. Makayla and McKayla are even worse.
MAD-eh-linn - Madeleine, some people pronounce it MAD-eh-linn in the US, I guessIf you met anyone with these names, how would you assume they were spelled?HAY-lee - Hayley. I know it's not the most common spelling but there are so many spellings around that I wouldn't guess it right anyway and Hayley just very strongly feels like the correct spelling to me.
KAY-lee - Kayley. See above. I know Kaylee is more common but so many spellings are used that I would probably never guess the right spelling anyway.
CAR-lee - Carly
KATE-linn - Caitlin, see Hayley and Kayley.
KAY-linn - Kaylynn (Kay+Lynn)? I know not many people would use my favorite, Caelin.
AL-i-sen - Alison, because it so strongly feels like the right spelling. I'd be prepared to be corrected, though.
JAY-den - Jayden
KAY-den - Cayden
HAY-den - Hayden
AY-den - Aidan, because the thought of Aiden and Aydan is so horrid.
KATH-rinn - Katherine
bree-ANN-a - Brianna
ZO-ee - Zoe
Mak-AY-la - Michaela. I know Makayla is more common but if someone introduced herself and I'd spell it Makayla and it wasn't Makayla I'd feel stupid because it looks so horribly misspelled and people who aren't namenerds may not know that it's so common and think I can't spell.
MAD-eh-linn - Madeline
Are there any spellings of these names you really hate? Or any endings, letter combinations you really hate and why?In general I dislike -ee endings. They look like the name should go on and on and on. As if more Es should be following. I dislike -eigh endings. They look ugly and want me to say AY instead of EE even though I know it's wrong. I hate -i endings because they're cutesy. Also -iegh or -ea or -ei endings to make the LEE sound. I also dislike -lynne endings. Apart from that:HAY-lee - anything that includes the letters A and I next to each other, e.g. Hailey, Hailee, Haili - except for Hailie.
KAY-lee - again the A and I next to each other, e.g. Kailey.
CAR-lee - especially the combination of the K with -ee or -i endings. Carli is bad, Karli is horrible.
KATE-linn - Kaitlyn! So ugly. Also anything that starts with Kat or Cat, immediately followed by the L, not an E. Kat is pronounced KAT not KATE so I don't get why people spell it Katlynn or Catlinn. Also anything that ends in -land (I know a Kateland), pronounced like LYNN. Or Katilyn (I know one). It should be KAY-tee-linn, not KATE-linn.
KAY-linn - Kaylynne etc
AL-i-sen - Allyson is just too much. Also Allissen etc
JAY-den - Jaiden
KAY-den - anything with a K, e.g. Kayden.
HAY-den - Haydn because it should be HY-dn.
AY-den - Aiden, I hate it.
KATH-rinn - Katheryn, Catheryn, Kathryn, Cathryn.
bree-ANN-a - Breanna or Breana. I mean they are probably not that horrible to others, just to me.
ZO-ee - Zooey, Zowie, anything with the word zoo in it (Zooie), anything that looks like it should be pronounced ZOY (Zoy, Zoi).
Mak-AY-la - Makayla, Mikayla, McKayla, anything that starts with Ma- or Mc and anything with Kayla in it.
MAD-eh-linn - Madelyn, Madelynn, Madilyn. Basically anything that ends in lyn, lynn, lin or linn and anything in which the fourth letter E is replaced with a Y or I.How many people with these names have you known? Approximate age? Siblings?I'm surprised so many people have met hardly anyone with these names. I know so many!HAY-lee - I know a Haylee and a Hayley who are roughly the same age (17 and 19, I think) and from Australia. They're neighbors. Haylee has a brother named Joshua and Hayley a sister named Brooke. I also know a Hayley who is about 7 from Australia. In the US I know a 50-something year old Hayley (which is cool), a teenaged Hailee, a teenaged Hailie, a Hayley who is in her mid 20s, a Haylie who is in her mid 20s and a male (!) and a female teenager named Haley. What I find weird is that I don't know anyone with the most common spelling Hailey.
KAY-lee - a Kaley who is in her mid 20s, a Kayleigh in her early 30s, a Kaleigh in her early 20s, a Kaili in her teens (sister Annabelle), a Kaylie who is in elementary school and a Kayley who is about ten and has a sister named Lysandra. I also know a teenager named Kaylee. Never met anyone who used a C spelling and never met more than one person with the same spelling which is weird.
CAR-lee - three, all spell it Carly. One is in her teens, one is over 40 and one is in her 20s.
KATE-linn - more than I can count. Katelyn (20s) who has a sister named Megan. Katilyn (teen), Kaitlin (teen) has a sister named Melissa, Kaitlin (early 20s) Caitlin (early 20s), Caitlin (mid 20s), Caitlin (late 20s), Katlynn (16), Kateland (teen), Catelynn (teen), Catelin (teen), Kaitlyn (early 20s) who has a sister named Kristen and I've met a Kayghtelynne. Yep, seriously.
KAY-linn - a Kaylin who is about 16 now. Weirdly enough this is a name I don't encounter much.
AL-i-sen - Allison (early 30s) who goes by Alli and has a brother named Nicholas. Alison (40s), Alyson (mid 30s), Alyson (early 20s). Not as many as I thought, I hear it a lot.
JAY-den - Jaden (13), Jayden (about 6), Jayden (about 10, girl)
KAY-den - Cayden (teen) sister named Jenna
HAY-den - Hayden (mid 20s), Hayden (early 20s, girl)
AY-den - Aidan (30s)
KATH-rinn - too many to count, most went by Katie. I would guess I have met at least 30 in my life. Most spelled it Kathryn and Katherine.
bree-ANN-a - Briana (mid 20s), Brianna (early 20s) who has a sister named Willow
ZO-ee - Zoey (teen), Zoie (about 3) and three Zoes all under ten.
Mak-AY-la - three girls named Mikaela (all teenagers) two go by Mika all of the time, one of them has sisters named Kira and Alana. Two girls named Michaela (mid 20s, teen).
MAD-eh-linn - three girls named Madeline, three Madeleines, one Madelyn, one Madilyn. The three Madelines were born in the late 80s, Madeleine in the mid 90s, early 00s and late 80s (from Germany), Madilyn in the early 90s and Madelyn in the early 00s.Do you like any of them? Would you use them?I like Madeline, Hayley, Caitlin and Zoe. I used to like Kayley, now I just think it's ok. I also like Katharine and Mikaela as well as Briana (bree-AH-na). I like Aidan and Carly is kind of nice. I would only use Hayley - as a middle name.
