Names I've recently fallen in love with- opinions please! :)
Hi! :)Ottilie- LOVE. It's so pretty and gentle. Also, the poem 'To Ottilie' is lovely. Lola- I was surprised at my love for this name, because it's not the sort of style I'd usually go for. But I think it's gorgeous. Maybe I've been reading too much 'Charlie and Lola' to Frances! Beth- Probably as a nn for Elizabeth. It's short and sweet, and I think it's kind-sounding.Mabel- This is a really sweet name. Molly- I know a lot of Mollys, so I always disliked this name for its popularity. However, I suddenly really love it! Emily- always disliked this name for the same reasons as Molly. Love it now. Idk.
Ernest- nn Ernie. Love it.Jonah- So handsome. Patrick- Nice way to celebrate my Irish background lol.Edward- nn Eddy or Ned. What do you think? xx

Ottilie- Yikes. I am not even sure how to pronounce it, and feeling too lazy to look it up. Doesn't look or sound covers pretty to me,though.Lola- Honestly, it's just ok for me. Nms, but not horrible.Beth- One of my best friends is named Beth, short for Bethany. I don't like Elizabeth. Blah. Beth is sweet.Mabel- I really can't get past the Granny Mabel image in my head. Molly- Very cutesy and happy. However, my sons last dog was named Molly, by himself as a 4 year old. So, never would use it now.Emily- just, no. I don't like it. I know waaaaaay too many Emily's for me to even consider it sounding cute or pretty.
Ernest- nn Ernie...no. No. No. Bert and Ernie. Sesame Street. And old man Ernest. Jonah- Nice. It does remind me of Jonah and the whale, but the name itself is nice.Patrick- Love:) I would have used it for a middle name but J hated it.Edward- nah. Sorry. As a middle name, nice. But not for a first, and I think Eddy and Ned are particularly old mannish! :) IMO only! :)

Ottilie -- I don't like it due to the first syllable.Lola -- I just can't like this because to me it's brash.Beth -- Really clunky and heavy.Mabel -- I agree that this is sweet.Molly -- I just don't like it. I don't hate it as much as I hate Polly, though. But it just makes me think of a dog.Emily -- I like it. I would never use it because of its popularity, but that doesn't make me dislike it.Ernest nn Ernie -- Ugh no.Jonah -- Words do not describe how I hate this.Patrick -- this is a nice handsome name.Edward -- Okay, but boring. I don't mind Ed but dislike Ned.

Thanks for you feedback :)And, woah, why do you hate Jonah so much? I think it's gorgeous!

I'm not sure that there is a concrete reason. I really dislike Joan as a girl's name, and Jonah sounds like Joan with an A attached. And then because it does sound like Joan with an A attached, I find it not very masculine. I also dislike Jonas. Maybe I just don't like the sound of Joan. But I think mostly it's just a reaction that there isn't a real reason for. I often either love or hate a name and can't give an actual reason for it, just as I can't give a reason that pink is my favorite color.

That's fair enough! :) I actually remember thinking that Jonah was a girl's name when I was little lol.
I can never explain why I like or dislike a name either! Xx

Ottilie-I really dislike it. For some reason this name reminds me of an octopus.Lola-I'm not a huge fan, just seems very downmarket.Beth-Prefer it as a nn for Elizabeth.Mabel-Very old ladyish, stodgy and dowdy.Molly-It's very cutesy and won't age well.Emily-I seem to have a very bad association with all the Emily's I've met. They just haven't been very nice people.Ernest-I always think of Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street. I also think of the comedy duo Morecombe and Wise, their names were Eric and Ernie, but you may be too young to remember them? Another thing I think of is an urn. I'm not particularly fond of Ernest, it just looks and sounds unattractive.Jonah-I prefer Josiah.Patrick-This is the best name on your list! I may be biased, but it's my son's name.Edward-This sounds posh and stuck up.

Ottilie: I want to like this name but I'm not sure how to pronounce it. The guide on here makes it seem ugly but I know there are variations.Lola: I think of the Kink's song and it's a very "risque" name here, reserved for prostitutes.Beth: Cute and simple but not really my style. Too mousy.Mabel: Too old lady.Molly: I used to hate this because it sounded infantile and I knew a lot of them--each one wretched in some form. Despite that, I'm still warming up to it.Emily: I like the sound but hate the popularity. Also, I'm 100% convinced that every Emily is evil. Spelling variants are evil and immature.Ernest: Too much like earnest. Also those Ernest movies from my childhood.Jonah: It's okay. A bland Biblical name.Patrick: Love this name.Edward: A family name I love, though nn would only be Eddie. I'm still worried Twilight ruined it but that's just my small-minded seething hatred seeping out. It's still a fabulous name.

Hah, someone else to mention the Ernest movies! I can't believe we're the only ones, I swear there was like a new one every year and they were everywhere.

You mentioned them, too? I have a bad habit of not reading any responses before I post my own on this board! They were everywhere! Posters, billings, and everyone was quoting them.

Ottilie- It's appealing but I don't know how to pronounce it. Lola- I think the sound is unattractive, it's too tied to Hollywood; it's too tied to Lolita. Beth- Beth isn't my favorite Elizabeth nn but it's nice. Mabel- Nope. Mabel Mabel strong and able get your elbows off the table. Molly- Eh, I like it. I like it a whole hell of a lot more than I like Holly. I like it less than I like Polly. Emily- I love Emily. I've recently started loving it again. It's just so old fashioned and unassuming.
Ernest- yikes. I do not like this one little bit. Jonah- I like it. I like it a lot more than Jonas. Patrick- Meh. Edward- I love Edward but I dislike both nicknames.

Ottilie- Not awful but nmsLola- I really don't like this personally, it's too similar to Lolita, which grosses me out.Beth- I actually quite like Beth. I don't like Bethany though, which sounds super dated to me, but Beth as a nn for Elizabeth is a nice change from Liz. I also like Bethan.Mabel- I don't like this at all, it's too associated with cows for me.Molly- Not awful but nms, sounds more fitting for a nn than a full name to me.Emily- Not awful but nms, I knew way too many Emily's growing up, made me kinda sick of the name. Don't mind most of the variants though. Emilia is a nice change up that isn't as popular.Ernest- Really don't like it, sounds dated and dorky and reminds me of those goofy Ernest movies that were popular when I was a kid.Jonah- Used to like it until Jonah Hill. Really don't like him at all and he's so well known now that he'll likely come to mind whenever someone hears Jonah, so that's turned me off the name.Patrick- Really don't like. I hate the 'pat' sound and I don't like 'rick' a lot either.Edward- I like this, nn Ned is cute

My favorites from your favorites are Lola, Molly, Ernest, and Edward.

Ottilie: NMS.
Lola: More of a dog's name to me. I swear, every female dog I know is Lola.
Beth: Cute and spunky, reminds me of the KISS song. Which is sad. But whatever.
Mabel: Love it. One of my favorites.
Molly: Very cute. I always liked it.
Emily: It's nice. I was almost named Emily, but my dad didn't like it. Now I have a cousin named Emily.Ernest: I love Ernest for some reason. It's old, it's clunky, but I think it's great. Not so crazy about Ernie.
Jonah: I agree it is handsome. Not something I would use, but handsome.
Patrick: I really like it. I had a good friend named Patrick growing up.
Edward: Love Eddie, and I'm warming up to Ned.

Ottilie is one I really like too. One of my favorite combos is Ottilia Tamar.

Ottilie - I prefer Ottoline.Lola - "walked like a woman and talked like a man" - it reminds me too much of the Kinks song.Beth - I also like it as a nn for Elizabeth, I like Bethan as well.Mabel - I agree that it is a sweet name and I would like to see it used more often.Molly - Feels nicknamey to me even though it's not really considered to be one nowadays. Also feels like a pets name (my cousin has a cat named this)Emily - Overused and quite bland, I think it would be nicer and more unexpected to see it as a middle name.
Ernest - I like it! I hope it makes a comeback.Jonah - Too tied to 'Jonah and the Whale' for me, I prefer Jonas.Patrick - Handsome. I dislike the potential nicknames Pat and Paddy though.Edward - Not bad but not a favourite of mine.

Pat and Paddy ...Those seem to have gone out of fashion, and Paddy never was in fashion in the US. Pat is kind of like Bill or Bob to me, you never seem to see it on anybody younger than like, thirty.

Really? Here all the Patrick's I know go by Pat or Paddy. I don't really know any Patricks that go by their full name.Though its an Aussie thing to shorten all names..

That's interesting, do Patricks in the US usually go by their full name? In the UK I know a teenage Patrick who goes by Paddy and another kid of around 8 years old who is just Paddy. Of course, it still has some connotations here as a ethnic slur to Irish people (my Irish father is called this by his work colleagues!), but I think the younger generations are probably less familiar with that. Pat is pretty much out of fashion here too and was probably more common on women anyway (as a nn for Patricia). I've also heard of Tricky as a nickname, which is pretty bad, lol.

I live in the US and all the Patricks I've known have gone mainly by Patrick, but called Pat on occasion. This includes guys I went to school with as well as older ones. I don't know any currently kid ones. I've never known one who went by Paddy. I think in the US since Patricia/Patty is so common and Paddy and Patty would sound the same here, males stay away from it.

Adding my two cents, I've known two Patricks in my life. (I'm in the US.) One was a young man in his early twenties when I knew him, but that was back in the early 90s, so he'd be in his forties now. He was called Patrick with no nickname. The other was an Irishman who'd moved to the US and owned an Irish bar. He was in his thirties when I knew him ten years ago. He also had no nickname--was always called Patrick. No Paddy for this Irishman---at least not here in the US. Maybe he had been called Paddy in Ireland, but since that's not a nickname thought of in the US it didn't take here. I don't know, but that occurred to me as a possibility.

I only knew one Patrick growing up, and he was Patrick, never Pat or Paddy. My great-grandfather was also Patrick, but he was called Pat. Here, it's seen as an old people nickname.

I've had a few Patrick's in the classes I've subbed for these last few years (they were all between 8 and 17), and they did all go by their full names now that I think about it. Except for one who went by Ricky. I knew 2 Patrick's when I went to school and they both went by their full name as well. Huh. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever met an American Pat or Paddy... not even an old one!

Patricks here do seem to go by the full name more often than not. The Pats tend to be older men but who knows when they started going by Pat? Pat and Patty are very common as a nn for Patricia, which you don't see much on young women anyway. I know of only one Patricia that goes by the full name, she's about thirty-five or maybe forty. Most are Pat or Patty with a significant minority using Trish.
I did once know a Patrick, named after his father, (I think the father was called Pat by his family but among his friends, my grandfather being one of them, he was called Stretch, because he was so tall and skinny) anyway, the son Patrick was always called Rick.Never known a Tricky and I hope I never do.

Thanks! xxGlad to see someone else likes Ernest! :)

I really like Patrick, so strong and down-to-earth. Eddie is so friendly and cheerful but I don't really like Edward that much.
Jonah is handsome too.
Beth is cute, I like it a lot more than Elizabeth. I think it's fine on its own, I had a roommate named Beth Anne for a while. Bethany would also make a good full name if you felt you needed one.
Never liked Frances or Francis. Just do nothing for me.
Molly is cute but in a stuffed-bunny kind of way.
Emily is like overpriced organic skim milk to me; watery, weak, pale, but you're supposed to pat yourself on the back for buying it because it's so good for you.
Ottilie I just don't like and never will.
Lola is totally trashy to me in a very outdated, cartoonish pathetic kind of way.

I think the same about Patrick! :) Thanks for your feedback.Frances wasn't a name on the list lol, it's my daughter's name. xx

Ottilie - Very interesting, I actually like it!
Lola - I don't like Lola, it doesn't sound that nice and for some reason I think about a mean person.
Beth - I like it, for a while I didn't like it but now I think it is very pretty.
Mabel - it looks like a name I would like but I just don't, something just isn't right.
Emily - I think it is okay.
Molly - Doesn't work for me.Ernest - I dislike it, it sounds and looks bad.
Jonah - I like it.
Patrick - I love this one! One of my favourites at the moment. But I like to spell it just Patrik.
Edward - Ok.
