Names with Hard G
What are your thoughts on names with a hard G sound? I’ve noticed I tend to find these really ugly. Here are some examples of names I despise with this sound:
Agatha
Agnes
Briggs
Craig
Dagmar
Dagny
Douglas
Edgar
Faigel
Hagar
Helga
Hugo
Margaret
Margo
Milagros
Olga
Peggy
Tadhg
There are of course a few exceptions that I like:
August
Diego
Finnegan
Ingrid
Magdalena
Marigold
Megan
Miguel

Gwendolyn is one of favorites, and Ingrid is lovely too.
Antigone
Gabrielle
Gouyen
Gretchen
Gwyneira
Gawain
Glendower
It is certainly a weighty sound that can drop like a thud sometimes, but I enjoy the clunkiness of names like Walburga and Aldegund. They sound like ladies who can pack a punch. If you are into spritely names, the letter G may stomp in like a dwarf in steel toe boots.

Ladies who pack a punch, hell yeah!!
I have kind of a guilty pleasure love of Eglantine. And I'm quite fond of Margo and Margot. Ingrid I would consider using on a daughter it's one of my favorites. Other hard G names I might try tossing into the ring could be Agate, Berengaria, Brigitte / Brigitta, Grace, Gabrielle, Galatea, Garnet, Glory, Gwen, Gwendolyn, Indigo, Inga, Marguerite, Marigold, Margalo, Augustine, Beauregard, Gabriel, Galileo, Garrison, Gareth, Gastón, Gawain, Giles, Graham, Grant, Greer, Grey / Gray, Hugo, Inigo, Miguel, Montgomery, Peregrine, Regulus,Rigel, Sergei, Thiago, Iago
I probably messed up and included some soft G's in there on accident.. sorry
Also Antigone! Love it!

I like Ingrid, Gregory, Grace, Margaret, and Abigail.
I used to find these names unappealing too - maybe it's cultural conditioning, because the word "ugly" itself has that hard G as well. As I've gotten older I find I appreciate these names more and more. They're an acquired taste I guess. They're more complex and sophisticated, and ultimately more satisfying to me. But 21 year old me would be appalled that I like the name Margaret now.
Oh, wow, I didn’t even realize “ugly” had that sound. That explains a lot!
I like Craig, Douglas, Hugo, Margaret and Peggy, Magdalen and Graham; Ingrid isn't bad. The presence of a hard G isn't what makes me dislike the others.
I think that isn't very common in current trend. Whether I personally like this kind of name depends on the sounds and atmosphere of individual names. But usually, that isn't my usual taste.
