I love this name, it's so beautiful. Everytime i heard the name i always picture Rachel Shelley (Who played a character named Helena on a tv show)
I have most definately considered using this name for a child- I've come up with the combos Helena Cecelia (honors my best friend) and Helena Eve.
Nickname wise, it depends on how you pronounce it. Hel-ay-nuh or Hel-eh-nah. You could use Lena/Layna for a nn

I used to love Helena, but now I'm indifferent to it. It's pretty and everything, but it kind of wore out its welcome for me.I picture a beautiful, yet very quiet girl who doesn't say much. She has light eyes and blond/brown hair.Helena Joy

Helena Michelle
Helena Erin
Helena Iris
Helena KatherineLena is the only NN I can think of besides Helen.

It's beautifulI picture it on an elegant, sophisticated woman. I think it's fine on a young child because after all, she'll be a young child only for a small part of her life, and anyway, that's what nns are for. Ellie and Lena come to mind.Helena Julia

Love it!My mom's mn is Helene, so I will most likely use Helena to honor her. I would love to see a little Helena running around.

Helena has been my favourite girls name for a very long time and I'm most definitly going to name my future daughter Helena Pauline.

I'm not a fan of Helen either, but Helena is lovely.I picture a blond girl, only because of a girl I went to school with. It reminds me of royalty. Lena would be a real cute nn. I'm hopeless with middle names, but Helena Ruby, Helena Emilie, Helena Esme and Helena Ottilie come to mind first. :)

I'm with you in that Helen doesn't appeal to me at all, however, I love Helena. I've only known one -- we grew up together. She pronounced it he-LAY-na. She was quite pretty, blonde, blue eyed, tall, smart, creative. I don't remember an awful lot about her personality, but she did the name justice. I mainly remember her because of her name, but I think Helena can represent just about anyone from any walk of life.Combos:

Helena ZoeOne other thing, Helena was the youngest of a family whose names began with J (John, Judith, Julia, John IV, Joseph). She told me once her parents considered naming her Jelena but decided against that. I thought that was interesting. I suppose the parents felt everyone would mispronounce Jelena.

Yeah, I myself like Helena a lot more than Helen.
Helena's very Victorian, but I can see it on a young girl, much more so than Helen.

Helena RebeccaA nickname might be Lena...but I just think it should be Helena w/o a nickname. You know, there's a town in Alabama named Helena, named after one of my relatives. I can't remember if her name was Helen or Helena, probably the latter because my family had some rather interesting names for girls sometimes...another one was Parthenia.

Helena, AL...
It's several hours from where I live, but I've heard the history before. It was named after Helen Lee, who was the girlfriend of a railroad engineer (whose name I really can't remember!).

Oh, thanks! I think Helen Lee is maybe my great-great-great-aunt? Or rather, my great-grandfathers? Anyway, I'm related...the Alabama Lees are one of my families.

I love the name Helena. I can see girls and women of all ages named this. As for nicknames, maybe Ele/Elle. Nell or Lena. But I prefer just Helena. As a side note, I pronounce it hay-LAY-nah, the Dutch way.Helena Camille
