Nameberry's 14 Vintage Baby Girl Names Waiting To Be Discovered
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/23/vintage-baby-names_n_6028482.html?cps=gravityIf you don't feel like reading the article, they are: 1. Delphine
2. Etta
3. Edwina
4. Flossie
5. Georgiana
6. Ione
7. Lelia
8. Lucinda
9. Mamie
10. Odessa
11. Opal
12. Petra
13. Polly
14. Tillie
15. Winifred -- I'm not sure why the title of the piece says 14 when there are obviously 15 names listed here.WDYT? Do you think any of these will skyrocket in popularity? Personally, I don't care for most of these -- especially the nns -- however, I really like Georgiana and Lelia which is a family name on my dh's side. I could picture myself using that one. As a whole, I totally support retro names. They're so much better than kr8iv names any day of the week.

I like Petra, Winifred, and Polly. I can see those three and Opal getting popular again, with the increase in popularity of Ruby, which is also a birthstone name.

I love Etta, it's gorgeous :)

1. Delphine- I am not fond of it, but I can see it being potentially used.
2. Etta- It sounds like someone with an accent saying "ate a." That being said I doubt it will get a blast of popularity.
3. Edwina- okay
4. Flossie- too dated. It sounds like someones great-great aunt with flossy white hair.
5. Georgiana- Lovely
6. Ione- I think the current trend favors Iona.
7. Lelia- Dislike it, but it is preferable over Layla or Lola.
8. Lucinda- I actually quite like this name and wouldn't mind seeing it used more.
9. Mamie- Some people call their grandmothers this.
10. Odessa- Alright but I definitely consider it a place name with Odessa, Ukraine and Odessa, Texas.
11. Opal- No, not chic at all.
12. Petra- Not bad
13. Polly- tolerable but a tad cutsie, and it retains the parrot connection.
14. Tillie- I can see it being used in Britain as a nick name for Matilda.
15. Winifred -- I'm not sure why the title of the piece says 14 when there are obviously 15 names listed here.

11. Opal
15. Winifred - Winnie is adorable as a nn.I like:
1. Delphine - Love Delphina, Delphine I only like.

3. Edwina - Close to loving this but not quite.
7. Lelia
12. Petra
14. Tillie - Love as a nn for Matilda or some other til name.I don't like:
4. Flossie - Only should be a nn and I don't like as a human nn. Good name for a cow or a sheep. Also makes me think of dental floss.
9. Mamie - Only should be a nn. I like it as a nn but it reminds me of my grandma who gets called this by some of my cousins.
13. Polly - Only should be a nn and I blah this as a nn though Pollyanna is cute.I whatever:
5. Georgiana - I much prefer Georgina. Genie or Ginnie is a cute nn.
6. Ione

Petra's the one I'd be most likely to use since it's the feminization of my brother's middle name. I like Etta, Opal, and Winifred, too.

I like Delphine, Ione, Opal and Winifred, and Etta, Flossie (prefer Florrie) and Mamie are ok as nicknames.

Yes, but not Tillie!1. Delphine - Yes
2. Etta - YES
3. Edwina - don't like it, but yes!
4. Flossie - Florence, 'Flossie', then yes
5. Georgiana - yes
6. Ione - yes
7. Lelia - yes
8. Lucinda -YES
9. Mamie - YES
10. Odessa - yes
11. Opal - don't like, but why not
12. Petra - yes
13. Polly - yes
14. Tillie - No, no, no. Matilda nn 'Tillie' maybe. But Tillie on its own, just no. Too cutesy, and it's already popular here along with Millie, Poppy, Ellie.. etc.
15. Winifred - YES

I kind of like Flossie, Mamie, and Tillie but I don't think I would actually use them. I love Petra, Opal, and Odessa.

I can see these getting popular:Delphine - despite Delphine on AHS: Coven being evil, I can still see it rising. Peyton first got popular for girls because of the evil nanny from The Hand that Rocks the Cradle.
Etta - fits well with Ella and Emma
Lelia - Layla/Leila are popular, so why not?
Lucinda - Lucy, Lucia, and Luciana are getting popular
Polly - I can see this risingI think the others look kind of stuffy and dowdy (except for Petra, which I like). I don't like Odessa because it's a city in Ukraine - part of my Ukrainian family was from there. Though I know it can be used (Muhammad Ali's mom was named Odessa).

1. Delphine - Love this, one of my favorites.
2. Etta - I like Etta, it's sweet.
3. Edwina - I find this kind of matronly.
4. Flossie - Nooooooo.
5. Georgiana - Not bad but I prefer Georgina.
6. Ione - Family name on my husband's side. It's growing on me.
7. Lelia - Never given this much thought but it is pretty.
8. Lucinda - Family name for me. Not crazy about it.
9. Mamie - Horrible.
10. Odessa - Another favorite.
11. Opal - Love the stone but not sure about it as a name.
12. Petra - Nice name, just not my style.
13. Polly - I like it as a nickname for Apollonia.
14. Tillie - This should be used as a nickname only.
15. Winifred - I like it.

Oh, dear. I was fully prepared to like more than one of them. But I like only one -- Lucinda. I would use that one. The others, no way. The ones I particularly dislike are Etta, Edwina, Flossie, Mamie, Polly, Tillie, and Winifred. And those are, with the exception of Polly, the ones I can't see getting popular.

I think Mamie is not good... unless one wants a girl without a head after combating a witch named Charlotte.

1. Delphine- I have a fanfic character named Delphinium, as in the flower, so I can see it.
2. Etta- It would fit with Ella, Emma, Emily, etc
3. Edwina- doubt it
4. Flossie- doubt it
5. Georgiana- it fits with the other frilly names- Isabella, Sophia, Charlotte, Amelia
6. Ione-I can see it as an honoring name where I am
7. Lelia- fits with Lucy, Lily, Ella
8. Lucinda- if a parent wants a full name for Lucy, why not
9. Mamie- no. No offense to Eisenhower or Meryl Streep's daughter, but it reminds me of Mammy, the black stereotype. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammy_archetype
10. Odessa- I'd use it. I even had a character with the name. But the story stalled.
11. Opal- nms, but I suppose so. Ruby is rising.
12. Petra- I guess
13. Polly- too associated with pet parrots now.
14. Tillie- as a nn
15. Winifred- sure, why not.

1. Delphine - Not a fan. It reminds me of French textbooks in school and learning how to say things like "Delphine and Enzo like to play tennis on the weekends." in French. 2. Etta - I like this but not as a full name. 3. Edwina - I really dislike this. I don't think Edwin or other Ed names feminise well. Plus here in Britain it just reminds me of former MP Edwina Currie. 4. Flossie - I went to school with a girl called Flossie and I used to love the name. Now it just seems a bit childish and cutesy, maybe because it's so close sounding to candy floss. 5. Georgiana - This has been growing on me lately. I used to think it was overly fussy but now I see some of its regal charm.6. Ione - Ok, prefer Iona.7. Lelia - Never come across this before, it's pretty. 8. Lucinda - Love Lucy, don't mind Lucinda. It's much nicer than Lucille. 9. Mamie - Too similar to the word 'maim'. 10. Odessa - Reminds me of Battleship Potemkin and the Odessa steps sequence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship_Potemkin#The_Odessa_Steps_sequence). All I see when I hear this name is Tsarist soldiers shooting civilians which I think we can agree is not a great association to have for a name. 11. Opal - I like this, it'd be cool to meet a young Opal

1. Delphine is pretty, but it's very French, and I'm not French at all, so I've never really considered it for potential future children.
2. Part of me wants to like Etta, but there's something very sharp and off-putting about the name.
3. Edwina is one of those ugly names that inexplicably appeals to some (including me), but it's not one I care for enough to consider or even put on my list.
4. Flossie is too sugary sweet. It reminds me of cotton candy and dental floss.
5. Georgiana is fine in Pride & Prejudice but is too much of an elaboration for me.
6. Ione doesn't do anthing for me. I don't like the way it looks or sounds, and I always want to say it like Iona instead, which is a road I used to live off of.
7. Lelia isn't unpleasant in sound, but I still don't like it. It reminds me too much of Leila, and in fact, I read it as such at first, which would probably be a common problem.
8. Lucy is cute, but most times, I've wanted a longer form and have never found a one that I like well enough. Lucia is the closest I've come. Lucinda has always made me grimace a bit.
9. Mamie is too close to mammy. It sounds almost comical, like a parody of something. I can also see where it could remind someone of mammary, as I saw in the comments.
10. Odessa is pretty, but there's something too grand about it, which is kind of silly, because I like names like Theodosia and Sophronia (although, I doubt I would ever actually use either of those).
11. I have a bad association with actual opals, so this name makes me uncomfortable.
12. Petra is one I have always liked, but it feels too Eastern European, and I have no connection to that area.

I can't see Flossie, Polly or Tillie zooming into the charts - they seem so very obviously nns, and Florence and Matilda are rising sedately in popularity already.Etta ... there are also more Henrietta girls than usual at present. So there could be an opening. Ione, Odessa and Opal ... I've heard of people being named Opal, but never where I live. Odessa is all geography, and Ione has pronunciation issues.Lelia? Not Leila? Unfamiliar to me, if correct.I knew a Petrina once, and find it nicer than stony Petra and easier to say.All in all, I think Nameberry are being their usual silly selves.

I like Delphine and Georgiana. I could also imagine more Odessas running around. A lot of those might become more popular as nns for more lengthy fns, but I doubt they would boost that far for fns since the US doesn't favor nn type given names like other places. I would love to see them become more popular though. I would just like to see more people use a variety of names so that the top 10 doesn't constitute as large of a percentage as it does. I guess a girl can dream!

I love Petra, and don't mind Delphine. I really hate Etta, Flossie, Mamie, Tillie, and Polly as given names (actually, I don't like them as nicknames either). They're nauseatingly cutesy.Edwina, Georgiana, and Winifred are awful IMO. I hope they don't catch on. And Odessa has a pretty sound but it's not a good name. The pogrom associations are horrible.

1. Delphine It sounds too much like Dolphin (which I'm pretty sure it means).
2. Etta I love this as a nickname for stuff like Henrietta and Marietta, but not alone.
3. Edwina no. Eww. No.
4. Flossie as a nickname for Florence, maybe...
5. Georgiana yes. So much yes. It's gorgeous.
6. Ione it's pretty, so yes.
7. Lelia I've never heard of this name, but I like it.
8. Lucinda sounds like a middle-aged woman with long red nails and frosted blond hair.
9. Mamie no. Reminds me of the word mammary.
10. Odessa it's a city, and I'm not a huge fan of place-name first names.
11. Opal it's cute.
12. Petra I don't see this as an old fashioned name, as I've met several young Petras.
13. Polly not a fan, but it's not awful. Just nms, I guess.
14. Tillie I love love this name as a nickname for Matilda, but with a y instead of an ie.
15. Winifred Winnie is a really cute nickname, but by itself Winifred is ugly.

Skyrocket possibitlies:
I could see Winifred, Odessa, and Georgiana gain substantial groundSlow and steady risers:
I predict Opal and Ione.My favourites:
I love Etta and Tillie. Don't mind Odessa and Delphine eitherSeem unlikely to gain popularity:
Flossie, Edwina, and Mamie

I really like Delphine (had no idea it was "vintage" though), Opal, Petra and Tillie (prefer Tilly). Winifred is nice too. The only ones I think will gain popularity are Georgiana (which is pretty standard, there are lots of Georginas at least), Lucinda (also standard) and possibly Polly. Tillie has been well-used for quite a few years, especially as a nn for Matilda. I know a Tilly/Matilda who is 13 or 14. Edwina is reasonably well-used too. I'd love to know how they predict this and why they choose these names. Who is going to name their child Flossie? All I think of is fairy floss. Florence is getting more popular, but Flossie on its own? Really?
vote up1
I've seen quite a few Georgiana's and Ione's (espeically Ione!) Leila and Lucinda have always been fairly well used here. Polly is gaining in popularity, I know 3. And Tilly is very popular here (mainly because of the popularity of Matilda).
(I'm in Australia)
I hope Winifred doesn't get popular!! :(

Actually, it's Lelia, not Leila, and that's part of the problem, imo, because Lelia really does look and sound like Leila despite having a completely different origin.Ione could grow on me and while I like Matilda well enough, I've never warmed up to Tillie.

whoops. I'm blind!

Tillie has seen some popularity recently in the UK, but other than that these names are not in any danger of coming back into anything resembling fashion. Flossie? Give me a break.
I do really like Opal, but again, I don't see it ever gaining any popularity.

I like opal too, but I tend to say it "Opul".And that's not great.
