Names from my family tree (1800s-1900s)
The posts about names from the 1800s sort of inspired me. Here are some of the more interesting names from my own (English-Irish-Scottish) family tree, circa late 1800s - early 1900s (when they were all either immigrating to or living in North America):
Female:
Maggie
Hannah
Nell
Florida
Male:
Edmond
Eugene
Alphonce nn "Phonce"
Aidan or Aiden (records apparently disagree on the spelling)
Maurice
Notable sibsets:
- Edmond, Simon, Daniel, Eugene, Fred, Vincent, Alphonce, William, Harry and Nell.
- Sara Sophia, Edmond Ambrose, Aiden Theodore, Robert, and Marie Margaret. (No idea why poor Robert doesn't get a middle name.)
(I could probably pull up even more interesting sibsets if I wanted to actually work; some of the families had, like, 14-16 kids.)
Thoughts? The only names that really jump out at me as overly strange are Florida and Alphonce (since I want to "correct" it to Alphonse).

Family trees are interesting places to find unusual names. I've found several in my tree that I had never heard before.
Female: Abbiona, Alta, Matissa, Othello (although it would seem more feminine as Othella), Appalonia, Avienell, Averilla
Male: Abednigo, Josiah, Amauri, Cardovy.
I haven't any clue where my ancestors came up with these names.

Josiah's from the Bible, and is actually stupid trendy right now, at least where I live.
Abednigo (usually spelled Abednego) also a Bible name, but as far as I know no one besides your ancestor actually uses it.
Not only is Othello a masculine name, it's a guy who murders his wife. Not anything I'd want to name a kid, but it might work for some fictional characters. Othella actually sounds kind of nice, btw.
I think I'd like more of these names if I could figure out how to pronounce them! Anyway, I like...
Alta (for a mn at least)
Averilla
Abednego
Josiah (obvious, since I named my son this ten years ago before I realized everyone and their dog was going to do the same thing)
Now I sort of want to name a character Abednego Othello. Too bad I don't have a plot or anything! :P
