Haha! My name is Mara Katherine, my grandfather calls me Mara Kat, and my aunt calls me Mara Jean (not quite sure why).
I prefer my name, but I feel like Mara has too many different pronunciations, (Mare-a, Marr-a Mahr-a, etc.) whereas Maura comes out as one pronunciation most of the time. I pronounce Mara as if it was spelled Marra, and Maura like Morra.

Mara is MAHR-ah or MAIR-ah. Maura is MOW-rah or MAWR-ah. So completely different.

I prefer the MAWR-ah over MOW-rah. I prefer the spelling Mora over Maura. But I think I prefer Mara over Maura or Mora. I like the pronunciation of MAHR-ah over MAIR-ah.

The occasion dictates entirely the pronunciation used.
Mara will always be MAH-rah, whereas Maura may be MAH-rah or MORE-ah.
And to be truthful, I have never been excited by either. They just seem very bland, generic, and... unattractive, I suppose.

Anyway, I'd say them basically the same but would easily bow to pressure to say Maura "More-a." I prefer Mara. I have a friend whose name was Maura but she felt weighted down by it and changed it to Mara, because she was really interested in eastern European culture and it was much more international/etc. I don't thin she's ever regretted the change. I've always thought it suited her better.

I wouldn't use either of them, especially Maura. The only combo to present itself is Mara Jean.

Mara is MAH-rah and Maura is MORE-ah. I love Mara but don't care for Maura -- I generally dislike names that end in an -ora sound.

I get a totally different feel from Mara and Maura. Maura is super dark for me. Mara I pronounce MAH-ruh (same as I say Lara and Tara), and Maura MORE-ruh. I prefer Mara slightly, but I like them both, although neither really excites me.

I've never known anyone with either name, and would say I like both names enough. I can picture each on girls and women of all ages, which is a good thing....

I pronounce them differently. I pronounce Mara with the first syllable having the same vowel sound as in "cat" and Maura with the first syllable sounding the same as the first syllable in "organ".

I like Mara and dislike Maura. Mara sounds fresh and crisp, while Maura sounds draggy and heavy.

Mara is my niece's name, and her middle name is Emily. Mara Emily. But that's kind of boring. She was given the middle name of Emily because Emily had been my sister's favorite name, but she decided against using it as a first name because of popularity.
