[Opinions] Bran
Seeking opinions on the name Bran for a boy. I'm in America, where most people will disregard the BRAWN pronunciation, so we would probably pronounce it with the short A. Also, I'm really liking the combo Bran Isaac. Both family-honoring names. Let me know your honest opinions! Many thanks in advance.

I think it is a good name and don't think it's a problem that it's a word, because it's just really extremely namey. When it's used as a name, it sounds like a name. It wouldn't occur to me to connect it with the idea of cereal bran, or if it did it wouldn't distract me. And I'm one who is often distracted by word soundalikes. Bran as a person's name reminds me more of Bram, Brad, and Brian than it does of cereal.

Oh, dear. I'm afraid all I can think of is high-fiber cereal and muffins. Otherwise, it's a nice combo. I almost hate to suggest it, but maybe you could tweak the spelling to get the proper pronunciation. Like Brahn Isaac, perhaps? "Bran" just feels unworkable to me.

Thanks humblebee. Great suggestion about changing spelling for proper pronunciation. My husband suggested Bron, but Brahn looks much nicer.

I don't think this name works in America. Bran is cereal / grain husks.

I just can't stop thinking "Bran Flakes". Sorry.

Cereal is all I can think of.

All I can think of is Raisin Bran and Bran Flakes/All Bran. It's nice with the BRAWN pronunciation, but I just can't help but think of bran cereals. Isaac is nice. :)

I can't really take it seriously as a name because in England we have Branflakes - which is a breakfast cereal. I much prefer Bram, as a nickname to Abraham. If you could find something that Bran could be a nickname for that would be better.

With a long A, it's wonderful. With a short A, it's breakfast cereal. What about Isaac Bran?

In America, Bran, pronounced with the short a sound as you are considering pronouncing it, is cereal. Oat bran, wheat bran, Raisin Bran, All-Bran. Leave it in the cereal bowl, is my advice.
