So I FINALLY found a name that sparked joy for both me and my husband. I tend to like more romantic/nature/classic names like Eleanor/Annora/Astrid or Vincent/Florian/Reid/Jasper.
I'd like to hear suggestions for middle names. Last name is similar to Hornik/Hendrik/Havenik

I like Cato more on boys than I do on girls, but I can see it potentially working for either. I would check to make sure that their isn't a Cato store outlet in your area. It would work best in areas where the lady's clothing store doesn't exist.

Oh yes and thankfully no worries about the stores in Canada.
Although, I'd still use strong association names if i liked the name enough. Ie- Allegra (lovely name- would use if hubs wasn't limited to short ambiguous names)

I love Cato for a girl, for boy it's okay too, but I pronounce them differently per sex. The girls' Cato has the stress on the second syllable for me.
I like it paired with Dahlia, Guinevere, Lavender or Rosalind. I'd not use Jasper as a mn for a girl with a unisex first name. For boys I like Jasper, Reid, Victor, Zacharias and Zephyr.

I think you're right! I think they're supposed to be pronounced differently with the different origins.
I understand it's not popular opinion to use traditionally gender names on opposite gender.
Jasper rings unisex nature name to me and I've known female Jaspers... especially in the context of being Canadian (Jasper National Park)

And never was. It's a classical Roman male name, and hardly ever used even for a male, and never used for a female.

If you just look up Cato here you will find it.
The Dutch institution of names lists it being used as far back as they started keeping track (1880). I'd say a name that has been used frequently for women for well over 140 years is a female name.
The only way you are right is that the classical Roman Cato isn't used for girls and the Catharina diminutive Cato isn't used for boys, and thus, arguably, it isn't unisex in the strictest definition.

I have seen, in some older novel or other, Cato used as a nickname for Catherine (a la Caro for Caroline), so although it's extremely rare, I don't think it's completely unknown.

There was a girl named Katie in elementary school; a couple of her friends called her Kato/Kayto for fun, but to me that's not even really a nn the way Kate/Katie/Kitty would be. It's more like on the level of back in the early nineties when people got called Stevo and Jenny-o. (Come to think of it, Kayto called one girl, Amy, Aymo.)

Cato is definitely a masculine name, a nice masculine name, but I would advice against it on a girl it seems awkward on a female. (Biological FtM or non binary persons not included) For a boy it's very handsome. It's been hovering in the background of my name nerd consciousness since reading the Hunger Games for the first time 10 years ago. Of the boy names listed I like:

Cato is a cool name, but it's only masculine to me. Cato for a girl doesn't do it for me. Maybe Kata?
I like the sound of Cato Alexander. I'm not a big fan of Abram and especially not with that spelling, but it sounds good with Cato as well.
