Salem . . .
Salem is my dh's favorite girl name, and it's nice enought but i'm gritting my teeth over the thought of using it -- we live in New Orleans, Louisiana, and that name has a large following here. I was hoping that since he decided on Gabriel's name, I would get to choose a name for our second child -- but he has his heart set on Salem if it's a girl so I'm actually considering it.So, What do you think of the name Salem on a girl?

It's teasing material and unfeminine to me, sorry.

Well, he certainly has good taste. Gabriel is a great name! And even though Salem has dark, wtichy connotations to it, I really like it in spite of that (or possibly because of it). She could always go by Emmie if she hated it. However, it all comes down to this- if you are even a bit unsure, don't choose Salem. Since he picked Gabriel's name, this should be your choice (or at least a mutual decision.) Good luck!

I wouldn't use Salem as a name. It reminds me of the cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch and of the Salem Witch Trials. -Amy-

Um, no. It makes me think of a cat or witches. And it sounds masculine to me. Gabriel is a great name, but since he picked the first child's name, now it's your turn. :b Or at least pick a name you BOTH love (and not just a name he loves and you can live with).

Ick. That's an obvious place name, and doesn't have anything feminine or pretty about it. It's rather ugly, actually.

Sound-wise, I think it's not bad ... Do you mean it's popular in Louisiana? I've never heard of it but then I live in the UK. It does remind me of witch-trials, which aren't that pleasant to be reminded of ..._____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

i think of cigarettes and the horrible witch trials...so it doesnt really seem like a very appealing name for a little girl...especially when they cover that part of history in her class

Salem I love. But, I am a dark person. It reminds me (for some weird reason) of Halloween and black cats and stuff like that. I think it's a very pretty name, reguardless of what you associate it with.~~The brave may not live forever, but the cautious don't live at all~~

I think Salem is cute, but if you really don't like it, DON'T use it. You'll resent it every time you say your dd name!

Too Salem witch trails and Salem the cat for my liking I dont like it at all for a girl or a boy and it doesnt go that well with Gabriel in my opinion
You sound very reluctant to use the name and if you really do hate it tell him so
If you really dont like it enough for a first name once again tell your DH so, Tell him your happy to concider it as a middle name and give him a few names that you would like him to concider
If he is reluctant to budge point out that he chose Gabriels name and that you would like to choose the next child's first name after all you are the one who carrys the child for nine months and has to give birth I am sure that once he realises you dont really like the name that much he will at least concider a few of your ideas

Too "witch trials" for me. It's also the brand name of a cigarette. The teasing potential is immense. I say if you both love it, go with it. If you have doubts, don't.

It could work as a middle name, but I really don't like it as a first name.

Not really down with Salem. Its okay...but that's it. If its popular in New Orleans, though, it is somewhate usable. I still think of a cat. What about another witchy name? Artemisia, Ishtar, Athena, etc...Liza

Hiya,Could Salem be used as a mn, since you don't seem to like it that much? If you can't and decide
to use Salem, I don't think it's all that bad. Mind you, I'm picturing witches and things too, LoL. I
think of a tall, slender girl, dark hair. I don't mean Selma Blair or anything ... Hey, do you like
Selma? That's Salem with the vowels switched ... Anyways, she could go by Sally, Sam, Em / Emmy.xx Cait xx
