Re: BTN's Top Names for 2012
I don't really agree that they're all very white. The only one of the top ten that really jumps out to me as white is Ronan, and maybe Sylvie (but not if it were Sylvia), and August for a boy. I don't think Iris and Theodore are particularly white. Taken all together I think the list seems to have an "upmarket" or self-conscious aesthetic, though, compared to the top 25 in the US or England. So you have a point there. But I think that can be expected from a survey of people who frequently think about names. Btw I don't think you have to worry about the term honky, applied to names, being taken as racist. I bet everyone over the age of, hm, about sixteen knows what you mean, and I doubt any white people are truly offended. If they are ... ha, ha, funny.

Interesting! I use the term "honky" because Brubeck died and I was thinking about Beau's opinion of Take 5 as "some honky ass shit," coincidentally as my sister was telling me she liked names like Vivian and Eli and Charles and Lucas and Caroline, so I was just telling her she liked really honky-ass names. Here are the names that scream "HONKY" to me, just for girls. (The only Ronan I know is Indian!)1. Iris (67) - HONKY
2. Sylvie (47) - HONKY
3. Alice (45) - HONKY
4. Rose (41)
5. Penelope (39)
6. Louisa (38) - HONKY
7. Charlotte, Phoebe (33) - HONKY, HONKY
8. Elizabeth, Freya (31) ; - HONKY
9. Helena, Rosemary (30) - HONKY, HONKY
10. Lydia (29) - HONKY
11. Astrid (27) - HONKY
12. Alba, Eleanor, Eve, Lucy (24) ; - HONKY - HONKY - HONKY
13. Susannah (23) - HONKY

Yea, I'd say so. This is obviously a personal reaction and nothing factual, and I associate Susanna with, well, the Marriage of Figaro... a different kind of honky
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao3jG-cOEPgChanging the "z" to "s" in Elizabeth is a choice I can totally understand, but it does strike me as kind of prissy.

So, like ... honky not as white race per se ... I could go to the thesaurus for this, but nah, I'll just say that I think I get it. I've heard Take 5... lol.I guess in that case I agree about almost all. Not Iris, though. Other disagreements: Beatrice (H), Rosalie (H), Dahlia (not)

Yeah, sort of - but actual yuppie type people tend to use names like Addison, Ava, Mason, and Aiden. In my observation, at least. I think hipster would be more accurate if I'm trying to stereotype these.I missed your name change and just noticed it and thought aha, no wonder I like this "new" poster. Glad you're still around after all.
