BTN's Top Names for 2012
I counted up all the data from the top 10 posts this year to find the most popular names on BTN. I counted similarly to the SSA: Accents don't count, middle names are ignored, hyphenated/double names are separate (ex. Mary Jane doesn't count toward Mary), different spellings are separate, and if you couldn't decide between two names for whatever reason, I only counted the first one (you only get 10 'votes' total, so if you posted 11, the last didn't count, or if you posted something like "Luke / Lukas" only Luke counts). The new number 1 names are Iris & TheodoreIris was #2 last year, (Alice was #1) and Theodore was #3 last year, following Henry and William. Iris won by a massive 20 points, but Theodore only beat Henry by 1 point.Iris is also the new number 1 name of all time (of all the data, 2008-2012), but Henry is still number 1 for boys. Also worth mentioning is Sylvie in number 2 for girls-- from 2008-2011, it was mentioned a total of 47 times. I'll post the full 2012 data in attached posts so you can CTRL+F and search for your favorites but as usual, I'll take any questions on the data (things like "Is Summer more popular in summertime?", "Where did Waldo rank in 2008?", and "Mia is my favorite name ever, how does it rank on the all time chart?") And if you have a spreadsheet reading program (OpenOffice, Excel, etc) and you want this data for yourself, just PM me and tell me what files you want (you can choose from any year 2008-2012 and the all time chart).

Thanks! I love these lists. I think the only ones of my long time favorites which made the list are Melody, Luke, Phoebe, Finn, Aaron and Willow.A bit surprised by Penelope. I think it will be huge soon (probably make the top 100) but I didn't think it was so common on this board. I hear Iris a lot on this board, but not nearly as much as Susannah. I would have thought Susannah would be number one for girls. Also Alice seems to have fallen out of favor here. At least there was a post on it recently and many didn't like it. I used to love it and don't like it anymore at all now.

Those are some honky ass names. Is that racist? You know you should go into professional analysis, right?

I don't really agree that they're all very white. The only one of the top ten that really jumps out to me as white is Ronan, and maybe Sylvie (but not if it were Sylvia), and August for a boy. I don't think Iris and Theodore are particularly white. Taken all together I think the list seems to have an "upmarket" or self-conscious aesthetic, though, compared to the top 25 in the US or England. So you have a point there. But I think that can be expected from a survey of people who frequently think about names. Btw I don't think you have to worry about the term honky, applied to names, being taken as racist. I bet everyone over the age of, hm, about sixteen knows what you mean, and I doubt any white people are truly offended. If they are ... ha, ha, funny.

Interesting! I use the term "honky" because Brubeck died and I was thinking about Beau's opinion of Take 5 as "some honky ass shit," coincidentally as my sister was telling me she liked names like Vivian and Eli and Charles and Lucas and Caroline, so I was just telling her she liked really honky-ass names. Here are the names that scream "HONKY" to me, just for girls. (The only Ronan I know is Indian!)1. Iris (67) - HONKY
2. Sylvie (47) - HONKY
3. Alice (45) - HONKY

Wait, so Susannah is "honky" but Susanna isn't?? Elisabeth but not Elizabeth?>These I agree are HONKY:Sylvie, Alice, Charlotte, Rosemary, Astrid, Eleanor, Susannah, Eloise, Katherine, Annabel (even though personal experience tells me otherwise), Bridget, Catherine, Claire, Margaret, Juliet, Julia, Stella, Katharine, Eirlys, Adelaide, Aoife, Elinor, Emmeline>These should be considered HONKY:Mary, Eira, Sophia, Susanna, Saga, Tullia, Anouk, Bonnie, Lumi, Irmelin, Kinborough, Lily>Would not consider these HONKY:Iris, Louisa, Phoebe, Helena, Lydia, Eve, Lucy, Delphine, Genevieve, Maeve, Matilda, Florence, Elisabeth,

Yea, I'd say so. This is obviously a personal reaction and nothing factual, and I associate Susanna with, well, the Marriage of Figaro... a different kind of honky
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao3jG-cOEPgChanging the "z" to "s" in Elizabeth is a choice I can totally understand, but it does strike me as kind of prissy.

So, like ... honky not as white race per se ... I could go to the thesaurus for this, but nah, I'll just say that I think I get it. I've heard Take 5... lol.I guess in that case I agree about almost all. Not Iris, though. Other disagreements: Beatrice (H), Rosalie (H), Dahlia (not)

lol! Honky is such a satisfying word to say I thought a lot of them seemed pretty ah... yuppie I thought maybe. Yuppie kid names.
vote up1
Yeah, sort of - but actual yuppie type people tend to use names like Addison, Ava, Mason, and Aiden. In my observation, at least. I think hipster would be more accurate if I'm trying to stereotype these.I missed your name change and just noticed it and thought aha, no wonder I like this "new" poster. Glad you're still around after all.
vote up1
Thanks...This is most fascinating. It should also be noted that some names are merely a consistent favorite of one or two people (11 of 15 Liliana appearances are from myself) for example.

Another interesting thingMuch like the real life chart, girls names change a lot faster than boys. The top 5 from 2008 is completely different from the top 5 from 2012 for girls, but 3/5 boys names are still the same.2008 Girls:
1. Anna
2. Eleanor
3. Louisa
4. Elizabeth
5. Violet2012 Girls:
1. Iris
2. Sylvie
3. Alice
4. Rose
5. Penelope-2008 Boys:
1. Henry
2. Theodore
3. William
4. Julian
5. August2012 Boys:
1. Theodore
2. Henry
3. William
4. Alexander
5. Thomas (actually, except for the top two being switched, the top 3 is identical. The same three names topped in 2011, but Theodore didn't make the top 3 in 2009 or 2010).

I do find this interesting but I take it with a grain of salt since it's not a perfect representation of BtN since some people don't always put down their list each month and some people do it every month. Also some people are here every year and some people only come on temporarily or intermittently. But thanks for compiling all the data. I do find it very interesting.Like we now can guess that a lot of people really like Theodore, William, and Henry and at least some of them consistently like them each year but they might be more changing in their feelings about girl names. As you said that is also similar to actual country based popularity lists. Boys names tend to stay about the same while gils names tend to change more frequently and wildly as trends shift. The girls list contains more trendy choices and less classic in comparison to the boy list. People feel like they can or they feel like they should choose more adventurous name choices with their daughters.

WowI haven't been very active on this board for this year, so a lot of these names are surprising! I'm not up on the current BtN trends. :)

Very interesting, thanks for doing this.

Wow, lots of work you did. Interesting.I hear Iris on young girls all the time around here, it seems like. I think I've heard three under-twelves being addressed as Iris in the past couple of weeks. Maybe it's just been really popular locally. Haven't seen any Theodores though, thank goodness.Surprised by Phoebe, and a little bit by Penelope.Nice to see Rose, Anna, and Lydia up in the top ten of all time.I think maybe the 23-25s are dipping into the top names of only one or two people who post in the threads every single month, though.

It actually gets to about 20th or so as 11 of 15 Liliana appearances are from myself. That's 73.3% or almost three quarters of the total.

Yeah, that's exactly what happens. When you get to the stuff that has 12 or less, it's very likely it was only one person who was consistent with their taste and their monthly posting. I've noticed some people say they don't post because their taste doesn't change and that affects the outcome. Or sometimes people just forget/can't post that month. If everybody posted every month, the bottom of the top 25 would look pretty different.

See, this illustrates what I've been saying for a while. There are "BTN names" and there are "real world names." These lists, especially the girls' list, bear very little resemblance to the SSA's popularity lists or most of the lists of popular names in other countries. Many of these names don't even rank at all in the SSA's top 1000.
This is the first time I've heard of Kinborough. I've never heard of it even on this board.

Thank you so much for keeping track of this and sharing the data with us. I always enjoy it. I expected some, I'm surprised by others, but mostly I'm impressed with our excellent taste. :)

Thanks for posting this.Kinborough and Irmelin surprised me. Boaz also kind of surprised me. I have seen it here and there on the boards, but I didn't realize that it was one of the top names.Out of the top names for 2012, these are my favorites:Iris

Kinborough, Irmelin, Boaz, etcThe girls names got into really long lists, as you can see, so at the bottom, could be names that only one person really likes, which I think Irmelin and Kinborough both are. I think I was the one who was posting Kinborough, if I posted it 11 of the 12 months, it made the top 25 because of all the ties. I believe Irmelin is all one person as well, but I don't know who.Boaz is a similar story but there's at least two people posting it. I think Delphi_Blue posts it every months, so that's her 12 + 3 from someone else.

Yep that'd be me. It's been in my top 10 for years.12 of those Xanthe's are mine, and I think I'm solely responsible for Geneva. Sonnet's mostly me too, and Grover. Oh, and Zimri- this month was the first time it didn't make my Top 10. And Eirlys and Elodie and Alaia.Man I'm so predicatble. Sorry for being so boring, guys!

Has Boaz appeared in all of your top 10s? It's in the top 100 (ranks at 67, tied with Jonathan and Richard) of all time with 60, but 60/12 months = 5, which is how many years we've been doing this. If you posted it every month, you put it there by yourself :P
vote up1
Actually, noI've just been going back over my data, and it wasn't in 7 of my Top 10's from 2008 (April-October plus January & Feburary). I stopped collating after April 2011, so will have to catch up to check the months since then, but at least 7 of those Boaz's weren't mine.60 Augusts and 60 Xanthes (consistantly number one for all five years) were definitely mine though, and Sylvie was appearing regularly back in 2008, so I was ahead of the times there ;)

Irmelin is all me! So is Mirjam and Ofelia, I think. And Saga and Tullia are mostly me as well ... :P

Wow, I really appreciate all the time and work you've put into these lists. Thank you!I'm pretty happy to see Iris in the top. Iris has been growing on me lately and it kind of fits with my other names. I tend to like vowel heavy names, whether it's the spelling or the sound. I do however pronounce Iris like ee-ris and not eye-ris. Actually, my top 3 girl names are all in the top 25. I much prefer Theodore to Henry. Henry is a bit dull to be honest. My top 2 for boys are also in the top 25. Too bad people haven't realised the greatness of Emmanuel yet. In the past some newcomers have accused the board of being eccentric or rejecting 'normal' names but looking at the lists I think it's pretty obvious that our name taste is pretty conservative. Sophisticated is a word that comes to mind when I see them.
vote up1
I have a student (child of immigrants) named Emmanuel, and he's such a sweetheart. His brother is Ignacio, and he should be starting school in a couple of years, and is also a sweetie.I'm glad we have conservative, sophisticated tastes. I might even call them 'normal' because a lot of the names on the lists have stood the test of time, and thousands, if not millions, of people were named them. Newer names may be 'normal' because you see lots of kids with the name, but they're still new, trendy names. There's only so many spellings of new names that a person can take.

Thanks for this! Fascinating.
I have noticed that Peter is getting an airing on other name sites too - if Peter is coming into its own again, surely Paul (sadly in the doldrums) can't be far behind!

Thank you this fun to look at what names come up on this board. I will have to remember to add my top 10 when it is posted each month. I am sure mine would change each month too :) Good thing we are waiting awhile for our next baby so I can come up with a solid list.
