Feminized names
What do you think of very obviously feminized forms of masculine names? Names such as Antonette, Augustina, Eugenia, Henrietta, Simonette, Theodora, Thomasina, etc. Are they usable today, or too old-fashioned?

I'm not so keen on -ette and -ina names, with a few exceptions. But I think -a names are fine, and if you wantto be nitpicky a significant amount of names out there are technically female versions of male names, such as Julia, Alexandra, Jane, Frances, Michelle, Danielle etc.

I think some of them work (E.g. Henrietta) and some of them really don't (E.g. Simonette)I can't really see names like you've mentioned on anyone young

Well, my name is a feminized form of a masculine name, so I have to say I find most of these names OK!I like:
Christophine
Jasperine
Johanna and Jovanna
Lucienne
Simona
Timothea
Zéphyrine
I also like Marlowe for a girl.Really ugly feminized forms are Donalda, Donaldina, Keitha, Kenna, Kevina and Nigella.

I noticed that Scottish feminine forms tend to be the ugliest. Feminine forms in Romance languages tend to be a lot prettier.

Not so keen on the kind of feminised names that scream 'we wanted a boy' -Kevina ffs! But the feminisation of saint's and ruler's names in the Christian West has such a long tradition, that I feel those are now female names in their own right (Thomasina, Simone, Joanna etc). Also names like Augusta, Antonia, Claudia etc are no more feminisations of a male name than Augustus, Antony, Claudius etc are masculine versions of female names. They are Roman family names that would have been either/or depending on their bearer. Eugenia comes from a Greek adjective, so similarly is equally male/female.Obviously, Theodora is having a massive renaissance at the moment, but I don't find any of those too old fashioned. Among my friends/acquaintances - roughly 25-45 yrs there are:
Adria
Alexandra (SO many!)
Amelia
Antonia
Aurelia
Camilla (a few)
Caroline (lots)
Charlotte (lots)
Christina
Claudia
Daniela
Emily/ Emilia
Georgie/ Georgina
Henrietta (3)
Josephine (2)
Julia/ Juliet/ Juliette (several Julias)
Lucy (lots, but some short for Lucinda)

I like some of them, and I think they are so classic you can't really ever say they have gone out of style, they just aren't trendy, which is something completely different. I like Augusta, Carolina, and Josephina the most from the ones on my list.
