Re: Feminized names
in reply to a message by Xeno
Not so keen on the kind of feminised names that scream 'we wanted a boy' -Kevina ffs! But the feminisation of saint's and ruler's names in the Christian West has such a long tradition, that I feel those are now female names in their own right (Thomasina, Simone, Joanna etc). Also names like Augusta, Antonia, Claudia etc are no more feminisations of a male name than Augustus, Antony, Claudius etc are masculine versions of female names. They are Roman family names that would have been either/or depending on their bearer. Eugenia comes from a Greek adjective, so similarly is equally male/female.Obviously, Theodora is having a massive renaissance at the moment, but I don't find any of those too old fashioned. Among my friends/acquaintances - roughly 25-45 yrs there are:
Adria
Alexandra (SO many!)
Amelia
Antonia
Aurelia
Camilla (a few)
Caroline (lots)
Charlotte (lots)
Christina
Claudia
Daniela
Emily/ Emilia
Georgie/ Georgina
Henrietta (3)
Josephine (2)
Julia/ Juliet/ Juliette (several Julias)
Lucy (lots, but some short for Lucinda)
Philippa (2)
Simone/ Simona (same pronounciation, the Simones are Swiss-German)
Thomasina
Victoria (again, SO MANY)Of all of them I find Josephine quite old fasioned. Another friend recently named her daughter Philippa (Pippa) and that really did come off as old fashioned.ETA Victoria. How could I have forgotten. 70s baby here!!!http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/167578
