Help[Opinions] Matilda?
I've always liked the name Matilda since I read the Roald Dahl book of the same name as a kid. I like its meaning of powerful battler, the sound of it, the fact that its not too common in the US and I like the nicknames of Mattie (my fave nn) but Tilly,Tilda, or Mat aren't bad either. What is everyone else's opinion of this name?
Possible combs I like are (heads up I like middle names that honor ppl)
Matilda Jennifer (for my mom)
Matilda Emily (for my sister)
Matilda Erin (for a friend)

I like it because my mom hates it
That movie Matilda, she seriously hates it, so I loved it when I was a kid. I do think of it as being rather witchy and magical. I don't think I'd ever use it - though I think it would be darling on a cat. A little gray cat called Matilda, can you imagine!
I hate Mattie and mat is even worse, gross. then everyone will think she's a Madison or Madeline. Tilly is the only way to go.

I think Matilda is a lovely name and I personally love the nn Tilly. Matilda Autumn is a very sweet combo and I also like Matilda Emily.

Matilda has really grown on me. It's not a beautiful name in my eyes, however, it is handsome, spunky and full of character. I have discovered that I like names for different reasons -- beauty doesn't always have to be a factor. BTW, I like Mattie as well.

I like Matilda for the reasons you mentioned. It has a lovely sound and look to it. It's very pretty. I also like the nickname Mattie the best.

Queens Consort
I'm in such a Matilda mood at the moment. I just started reading "Queens Consort" by Lisa Hilton about wives of medieval English monarchs beginning with the Norman conquest. As you can imagine there are many Queen Matildas running around the pages, along with Emmas, Ediths, Margarets, Adelaides, even an Adeliza. I can't wait to get through my current chapter on Eleanor of Acquitaine to get to the Berengaria of Navarre chapter! I recommend it to anyone interested in this time period. It views history from the overlooked queens' perspectives.
So your thread is really catching my eye. I love Matilda because it brings up two images at once, in my mind at least. One is a stalwart, dig-her-heels-in and get the job done kind of person. The other is a waltzing (allusion intended) young woman in a white dress and her hair up. I love names that give me more than one feeling. and as you say the nn possibilities are many. I'm not familiar with the Roald Dahl story, but I'm sure it's darling.

It's okay. It's not my style - seems sort of antique and doughy, like Clara and Mabel and Clementine, to me - but I have met a little girl aged three named Matilda (she was from Europe), who wore the name easily and prettily. It's dignified without being stuckup, and I like that about it, even though I don't like the way the first syllable comes out mutt in my accent.
I think Mattie is the best nickname too. I like all your combos except the one with Autumn, but I guess with some surnames it could sound nice.

I've liked Matilda ever since I read the book, too. It's a warm and cozy kind of name. Tilly and Maudie are my favourite nicknames.

Matilda is a little dated for my taste but I do really like the name for someone else. I think it has the potential to become more popular. I also like all the nickname potential, that it is uncommon but not unheard of, & the sound of it.

I like it, but it is very popular here (in Sweden). Tilda and Tilly are the most common nicknames here, but I only like Tilly, or Tilde.

I've known one Matilda, a very elderly African-American woman who had to use a wheelchair. In spite of the fact that she was in a wheelchair, she still cooked up a storm for her family every day, and it was some of the best down-home Southern cooking you could ever hope to taste. I felt bad for her because her common-law husband was having an affair with a much younger woman (my roommate) right under her nose. I mean, literally, right under her nose---literally, in the back yard while she was in the house. Then he used to take some of the food that she cooked and give it to his girlfriend. Talk about adding insult to injury. He died a few years back.
She went by the nickname Til and everyone except her children (she had eight) and her grandchildren called her Miss Til. She was a sweet, giving woman, but that fact never made me like her name!

I have Trudy listed on a poll today. How odd. I must be getting psychic because after I listed my combos I looked at other people's polls. A lot of uncommon names I used were in other people's polls. It looks like I'm cheating but I'm wasn't. And now I find Trudy actually being considered! I hope this means I'm wrong in what I consider uncommon. :-)
