[Opinions] Male character names
I'm working on a story and I need a new name for a protag. He's the scruffy kind of boy, adventurous, mischievous and cheeky, running around shoeless, grass stained clothes, messy hair. He's a vagabond and has no parents. He's kind and friendly, and while he's a bit wild, he can be soft and down-to-earth. He also loves birds. Nothing fits him and I've been looking a while. I need something that matches his personality. Something rough, natural, a bit weird, and like I described him above, 'scruffy'. The kind of name you'd give a patchwork scarecrow. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading.

Where did he get his name? From some person who cared for him at some time? Or is he not quite human and able to exist outside society? This will affect your choice. I'd suggest giving him the blandest and most boring name you can think of, and let him rise above it.

He does technically have parents, but one day his mother chased him away (not for anything he did) so he did have a name (not the one I want to change) but because he feels like somebody else now, he wants to go by something else. He's also human in the sense he has a human soul, but physically he is inhuman, inanimate, though he can still walk and move. I appreciate the suggestion for a bland name. That's an interesting idea and I'll consider it.

Eli He sounds like he might have a word name, either his real name or a nickname he's used for so long nobody remembers his real name-- especially if it's a bird or other animal (most of the birds are at the end of this list):
