I love Julian and Thaddeus, and have a soft spot for Leopold. Julian, in particular, is one of my absolute favorites and I would use it in a heartbeat.

In descending order of how much I like themJulian - it's sometimes top ten.
Franklin - Seems hip. A little too retro for me.
Gilbert - I think it's cool in a squarish way. Wouldn't use.
Maxwell - maybe the most reasonable full name for Max, though it's vaguely pretentious. I like Max
Maximilian - the self introduction sounds a little arch, but ok.
Thaddeus - I don't like the sounds, but it's a cool name.
Linus - except for the Peanuts character, it's alright.
Marlin - seems neat in theory, except it's so fishy.
Leopold - has to be Leo. I dunno, it's alright.
Gregory / Gregor - boring.
Emmett - mascot-y.
Orville - very old mannish image.
Milton - so cold, and it's Milt.
Walter - oddly weak and stuffy to me.
Basil - glum sounding, unless just British. Sound reminds me of bag.
Jediah - Jedidiah? fusty stern and archaic, almost comically.
Jeremias - like Jedidiah. nmsaa.

Gregory / Gregor- I think Gregory and Gregor are handsome, but Greg is so drab. Just like an average guy in the 70s.
Franklin- I prefer just Frank (or Francis nn Frank). Franklin doesn't do much for me.
Gilbert- It always sounded dorky to me, but it's nice with the French pronunciation.
Jediah- Don't like the look or the sound.
Jeremias- I heard it with the -s ending so infrequently (in fact, I though think I've ever met a Jeremias) and the -ah ending so commonly, that the former ends up sounding like "Jeremiah's" to me.
Walter- I like Walter. I've known some great Walters/Walts.
Julian- I like the sound, but it always came off as a little prissy to me.
Milton- I can't get past the old man vibe this one has
Basil- Never liked it as a name. Well, maybe on some exaggeratedly British man, but not on anyone else.
Orville- Reminds me of popcorn.
Linus- Love Linus so very much. I would use it for a son if names that end in s didn't sound odd with my last name.
Marlin- Reminds me of the fish.
Maxwell- It's nice sounding, if a little pretentious
Leopold- Never cared for Leopold. I love Leo, Leon, and Leonardo, but not Leopold (or Leonard).
Emmett- Nice enough, but not a favorite.
Maximilian- Love. Much better than Maxwell, IMO.
Thaddeus- Love as well.

I like:Gregory - it sounds earthy and warm, probably because it reminds me of my cousin who is a gardener
Walter - I think of Sir Walter Scott, various famous Walts, and ballroom dancing (the waltz)
Julian - I think of a guy I knew in college who used to wander around campus playing an accordian, plus I like the sound
Basil - I think of Baz Luhrman and basil in clay pots
Emmett - pleasant and familiar sounding
Thaddeus - I think of a plaid blanket draped over an armchair in a library; plus I like the sound and meaning
Could go either way on these...Gregor - I think of monasteries (Gregorian chants and Gregor Mendel)
Franklin - I think of an overweight guy in a wife-beater...plus FDR and Benjamin Franklin
Marlin - I think of Marlon Brando and baseball (Miami Marlins)
Maxwell - I think of slicked back hair and pin stripe suits
Leopold - nice but pretentious; I get a similar vibe from Napoleon
Maximilian - don't really associate anything with it, sounds European
I dislike:Gilbert - I think of suspenders and pasty skin and the Dilbert comic strip
Jediah - looks like a compromise between Jedi and Jedidiah
Jeremias - I like Jeremiah, but all *ias names sound slimy to me
Milton - I think of Paradise Lost and pollution (mill towns), plus it sounds boring
Orville - I think of popcorn and pigs (Orville Redenbacher / Orville and Wilbur / Wilbur the pig)
Linus - sounds whiny and reminds me of my Uncle Lannis who can be kinda supercilious

I prefer Gregor to Gregory; I might use Gregor.
Franklin is a good way to get to Frank, but I prefer Francis.
Walter has dignity; Wally doesn't. Fine as a mn, therefore.
Linus gives me Peanuts memories, all warm and fuzzy. Not usable, though.
I like Max on its own. Maxwell is late Beatles - Silver Hammer- and Maximilian is too long for comfort.

Thaddeus: It's okay, but it's heavy. And it "thuds", like a dinosaur butt.
Maximilian: I prefer Maxwell.
Emmett: Brown. Dr. Emmett Brown.
Leopold: I've been reading about Queen Victoria, so it reminds me of her son, Leopold. Poor bastard.
Maxwell: Speak of the devil...
Marlin: Not my thang.
Linus: Ditto. Blanket, thumb-sucking, can't take it seriously.
Orville: Wright. Redenbacher. Old dork with a bowtie.
Basil: I can't like this one. I try, but we're just not a good fit. Maybe Basil is a Capricorn? IDK.
Milton: I had a great uncle Milton, who went by Milt. Such an old guy kind of nickname.
Julian: Handsome enough. Nothing special.
Walter: Dorky and lame and kill it with fire.
Jeremias: Eh? Do not like.
Jediah: Same.
Gilbert: NOOOOOOOO.
Franklin: I actually really like this one. Frank/Frankie is adorable.
Gregory/Gregor: It's okay. Nothing to write home about. Gregor = Gregor Samsa. Ew.

Gregory / Gregor - I adore Gregory, but I am biased as it's one of my brothers' names.
Franklin - I don't like it as a name, but as a namesake for Roosevelt? I love it.
Gilbert - Old, stale.
Jediah - It looks like a misspelling of Jedediah.
Jeremias - I prefer Jeremiah.
Walter - I can only think of Walter White from Breaking Bad. I don't like the sound of it, either.
Julian - It's handsome, a little bland.
Milton - Same as Gilbert.
Basil - It's a handsome name. I don't exactly love it, but I find myself using it for characters more than once for whatever reason.
Orville - Redenbacher popcorn.
Linus - Sinus. Ugly.
Marlin - A fish.
Maxwell - Trendy, nms.
Leopold - Alright, I prefer other Leo- names to it though.
Emmett - Trendy, nms. Male Emma.
Maximilian - Same as Maxwell.
Thaddeus - Gaining momentum. Handsome.

Sorry, meant to reply to the original post.Gregory / Gregor - I don't like it. It sounds dated and clunky.
Franklin - I don't like any surnames as first names, and this has the extra insult of containing the ultra-ugly Frank.
Gilbert - Ugly. Sounds socially awkward.
Jediah - Looks invented. Jedediah is better, but sounds redneck to me.
Jeremias - Jeremiah is better, but too much like Jeremy, which I don't care for.
Walter - Dated. Also seems socially awkward.
Julian - I love it! Balances sounding handsome with intelligence, without the sweaty-palmed geekiness of some of the other names.
Milton - Better than Gilbert and Walter. Makes me think of the poet John Milton.
Basil - Handsome but herbaceous. Blaise has a similar sound, without invoking the herb.
Orville - Reminds me immediately of the popcorn, not the Wright brother.
Linus - Sounds anemic and sniveling, like a spoiled child.
Marlin - Merlin is much better.
Maxwell - Appealing enough, but surnames as first names are just nms.
Leopold - Love Leo- names, but I much prefer Leonidas and Lionel.
Emmett - Again, surname. Nms.
Maximilian - I love this name! Max is a timeless nickname.
Thaddeus - I like it, but not as emphatically as Julian or Maximilian.
