Sophie and Gareth were not planning on gettign pregnant so soon. Sophie still had a great deal of training to do to master her witchcraft, and besides she and Gareth already felt like they had a family in Andrew, who looks upon his uncle and new aunt as more of a combination of parents and older siblings. They were, nevertheless, thrilled with the news. Rollo (more and more part of the family and less and less servant as time goes by) was actually the one who announced it. A rather powerful wizard in his own right, he said casually to Sophie one day during her training that, "She won't like it if you try that spell." The spell backfired and Sophie demanded an explanation, which revealed to them all at once that not only were they expecting, but that the baby was a girl. As soon as the excited coupel announced it, Emma and Lucy as well as Gareth's sister Rebecca all descended upon them, offering advice and assistance and generally being good-naturedly pushy. Sophie and Gareth bickered cheerfully about things like decorating the nursury, the finer points of child-rearing, and of course names. Sophie is rather more classic, while Gareth prefers showier and more unusual names. The debate was settled when she was born on a night dominated by a bright full moon. Her first name was clearly meant to be Luna, and Sophie's choice of Rose was made her middle name. Her parents were thrilled with her, as she was a healthy and beautiful baby who looks remarkably like Sophie with dark hair and bright eyes. Rollo pretends indifference, but hasbeen caught cooing over her and is rather easily roped into looking after her while Sophie practices her magic. Andrew was at first newvous, never having even seen a baby so young, but fell wholeheartedly in love with his little "sister-cousin" as soon as he met her. She established her identity as a witch within minutes after birth, when a fit of crying turned her hair from dark to vivid bright green. Luna can be rather tempermental and likes things just so, but is in general a rather cheerful baby and has a way of gurgling when she sees her parents that Sophie and Gareth agree is worth her more demanding moments.

In the midst of all the happiness about the baby, there was a bit of worry over Sophie. After givign birth, her magic began to go somewhat haywire. It was much more unwieldly, difficult to control, and Sophie found herself unintentionally making things happen in ways she hadn't since she was a child. She and Gareth approached his old tutor, who now occasionally helps Sophie, and she informed them that it was simply the result of giving birth--the rapid change in her body it had caused was affecting her magic. It was a common and well-known problem that no one had thought to warn them about, and Mrs. Merlin (the tutor) assured them that it would regulate itself after a while, especially if Sophie kept practicing. This is what led to Rollo and Andrew taking Luna, as Sophie's erratic spells have been known to cause damage. Until her magic is back to normal, Luna is banned from the (now empty) room in the manor where Sophie has her lessons. Rollo grumbles about being, "a wizard of formidable and frightning power, damn it, not a nursemaid" but he is not fooling anyone, least of all Luna, who will always give her most adorable coo and melt him into jelly whenever he begins his whining.
