[Opinions] Temperance or Constance?
I am really liking both of these names today. Which do you prefer, and what would you pair it with (as a first or middle name)?

They're both excellent! I love how whimsical and unexpected Temperance is, but if we're talking about actual usage I think I'd have to pick Constance because Connie is a cute nn. :)My combos with those are:
Ada Temperance
Temperance Channary - love this
Temperance June
Clara Constance
Sarah Constance - and thisAnd I'd like to think of more, but I'm starving and it's lunch time! Maybe later today I'll edit with some new ideas.

Oh, I quite like Ada Temperance and Clara Constance. I'm not sold on Connie as a nickname yet, but I'm coming round.

I had a friend in college named Constance who went by Connie. It changed my opinion of Connie. Otherwise I thought it seemed dated.Okay, I have a few minutes to spare, so:
Temperance Alberta
Dorothy Temperance
Dinah Temperance
Ellen Constance
Constance Greer
Constance Olivia
Temperance Posy
Tallulah Temperance, how wonderfully hipster
Zinnia Constance
oh oh, Constance Amanda!
vote up1
*flails*I love pretty well all of these. Temperance Alberta is grand grand grand, Temperance Posy, omg. Constance Amanda is so sweet! And Agreed, Tallulah Temperance is so fire-engine-hipster-red. looove iiiit

I prefer Temperance to Constance. Although Constance, of course, started as a Puritan virtue name, it retained popularity a lot longer than most of those names, and now it has a sort of dated mid-twentieth feel to it. Also, I detest the nickname Connie.Temperance, on the other hand, has a more seventeenth and eighteenth century feel to it, and I love the nickname Tempe.

Yes, Constance, esp. with the inevitable nickname Connie, does feel dated, like faded 1960's yellow-flower wallpaper in a kitchen. I am not sure how I feel about that. I am hovering right on the edge of love/hate.

I prefer Constance by a mile. I adore the nickname Connie and hate any nicknames for Temperance. And I relate Constance to consistancy and constant love, and temperance with alcohol. I like it as the first or middle. I personally would do Mary Constance or Azura Constance or Constance Emily, Constance Ava, Constance Mary, Constance Lilac, Constance Azure...

Tmeperance's lack of nicknames is troubling! I don't like Tempe, I think it seems contrived and too aware of itself. I don't mind Tem, though....Constance and Rosemary would make excellent sisters! I really like the gentleness of Constance Emily.

Ohh so many nice ones! Lucie Constance is adorable! It's so yellow and sun-shiny. I also adore Marie Constance. It would be really nice a double name too I think.Iva Constance is really neat, it's very interesting. I also like the idea of Iva Temperance, a lot. thanks!

mmm, chocolateNow I REALLY like Temperance! LOLI really enjoy Constance Alice, it is very "cool blonde in a blue dress" to me. Constance Giulietta is really neat! Thanks :)

I do love chocolate, but I wouldn't want to name my daughter after it. =P Though I suppose Cadbury would be worse. An' you're welcome. =)

Temperance Cadbury sounds like the most wonderful New Englandy name ever!

ConstanceI adore the name Constance and would consider using it one day. I love the meaning behind it, I love that it sounds so strong and spunky- you wouldn't mess with a Constance. I couldn't imagine a passive, quiet as a mouse Constance. I also like the nn Connie a lot too which is what turns a lot of people off. Connie is the sweet maternal side of Constance. I just imagine this fiery woman who finally settles down to married life with a bunch of kids in the 50s- when she disagrees with her husband and goes all feminist on him, she is Constance. When she nurses her baby to sleep or bakes cakes with her little ones, she is totally Connie. One of my great-great-Aunts was Auntie Connie and she was one of my favourite old women when I was a little kid. She was by all accounts as stubborn as a mule, went out and had a career way before her time, put food on the table during the Great Depression for her family when her husband, father and brothers were out of work, could stretch a dollar like no other, and was still going strong at the ripe old age of 94 and would teach me how to dip my cookies in hot tea and then tell me I mustn't tell my grandfather because he thought it to be the height of bad manners. Her full name was Sarah Constance (she hated Sarah).Sorry, long explanation of my love of Constance but maybe it will make you love it a little more too :-)Temperance is nice too but the meaning isn't the best out of the virtue names IMO.

That story definitely makes me like Constance a lot more! Oh great-great-aunt Constance, you firecracker! Dipping cookies in tea, indeed.I like how there are two sides to Constance in your mind, I really like names that have that coin-flip kind of personality.Well done!

Constance for a first name, definitely. I love Constance--it reminds me of Constance Bonacieux from "The Three Musketeers."
Temperance is better in as a middle name, I think.
vote up1
I prefer Temperance, but Constance probably sounds more "normal". And you could call her Connie, but what would you call a Temperance? Tempie?
Some combos:Temperance Annetta
Temperance Christine
Temperance Mathilda
Constance Marie
Constance Elena
Constance Veronica

TemperanceEver since I started watching Bones, Temperance has really been growing on me.It's perhaps more usable as a middle name, but I do like it in either slot.Temperance Jane
Catherine Temperance
Emily Temperance
...not getting much of anything combo-wise today though!

Aw, I can't choose. They're both quite strong names. Constance has a quiet sort of strength, and Temperance is a bit more feisty. Constance is definitely more user-friendly, nn-wise: Con is homely, Connie is bouncy, and I suppose at a push you could also have Stanzi or even Tansy, but Temperance would have to be the full thing, I think. Temp or Tempy sounds like you borrowed her, Tempe reminds me of the vegan bean-curd foodstuff, and Tempera would be a) pointless and b) paint.I'm fresh out of combo mojo today, but for some reason I'm quite liking Constance Irene. And I had an umpteen-times-great grandmother called Temperance Jane, which is nice enough.

Constance Irene is just perfect!
vote up1
Do I have to choose?Temperance just edges it for me, but only just.
vote up1
Constance by a long shot. I don't know what I would pair it with.

I think I'd go with Constance. I loved it when I was around six or seven years old. While Temperance sounds fresher, it has no nicknames. And as far as actual virtues go, constance is more important to me than temperance. Also, I like Pie's suggestions of Stanzi and Tansy as nicknames. They're more upbeat than Connie.

ConstanceI think it sounds much prettier! The idea of temperance (i.e. not drinking) is outdated, which makes Constance my pick. Constance Amelia
Constance Cordelia
Constance Delilah
Constance Eliza
Constance Annette
Constance Liora
Constance Rebecca
Constance Maria
Constance Georgiana
Constance ChrysanthemumSamantha Constance
Aurelia Constance
Willow Constance
Jana Constance
Deirdre Constance
Evelyn Constance
Maya Constance
Abigail Constance
Henrietta Constance
Azalea Constance

I think that the word temperance can apply to many things---one can be temperate about things other than just drinking, although I know that the word became associated with the anti-alcohol movement of the 1800's. Still, again, it doesn't have to apply to just that, and I don't think that's at all what the Puritans had in mind when they first started to use the name Temperance. If I thought that was all it could mean, I would definitely avoid it, as I've been an alcohol drinker all of my life.
vote up1
yesThe idea of being temperate about many things was what got me thinking about the name Temperance in the first place actually, not just drinking.
vote up1
Temperance.I like the meaning ("restraint") and I love the more Puritan vibe you get with Temperance than you do Constance. What about Constant as a male name? Zipporah Temperance
Ana Temperance
Daisy Temperance
Aileen Temperance / Eileen Temperance
Zilda Temperance
Temperance Rhoda* (I really like this one)
Temperance Eve
Temperance Mary
Temperance Adelaide
Temperance Eleanor
vote up1
Temperance. It's slightly more unusual than Constance and I like the idea of the virtue more than Constance. Temperance Eve or Inara Temperance.
vote up1
Temperance Eve is dark and delish. thanks!

ConstanceI've really been liking Constance lately. Constance Amelie?Temperance doesn't really appeal to me as a name.
vote up1
Constance Amelie is darling!
vote up1
ConstanceI just like it better. It has a more pleasing look and sound. There's the bonus of a Constance being in Redwall, and a short story I read recently used this name for a little girl who can do magic, which seemed perfect.
I've never liked Temperance that much. The beginning sounds like temper, and it just isn't as pleasing as Constance.
vote up1
what is Redwall??
vote up1
A series of books & cartoonshttp://redwall.wikia.com/wiki/Redwall_Wiki - they even have their own Wiki. It's interesting - I've read a few books. Husband is into them, I not so much.

Temperance- but only because of the Bones TV show accociation. I think Constance has a cuter nicname Conni vs TempyTemperance does tend to remind me of temperature

I can't imagine a Temperance who liked her name; in fact, I can't imagine a Temperance! So, Constance any time: nice and Mozarty, and a longer pedigree than Temperance - certainly as far as general usage goes.I was at school with a Connie who is Constance Clare; her ln also began with C, as does her married ln. Constance Eleanor
Constance Flora
Constance Brenda, funnily enough
Constance Gloria
vote up1
Nice and mozarty! terriffic! I'd for sure use "Constanzia" whenever possible :)Really loving Constance Flora
vote up1
Constance. Besides liking the sound of it better and thinking it's namier, I just think the meaning is more dignified and positive. Temperance evokes the potential for excess, more than Constance evokes the potential for inconstance.

Temperance! I'm far too obcessed with Bones to pick Constance. I like Temperance Jane, I don't know why.

Temperance!By about a country mile. I've never really liked Constance, and I've been a Temperance Brennan fan since long before 'Bones' (which I have been watching a lot of recently also :P), so Temperance is the winner for me.
My favourite combo is Sarah Temperance. Because I've never found a nn for Temperance that I like, I've never combo'd it as a fn, but reading your thread I thought of Tansy, which I also love. So:
Temperance Mercy
Temperance Cassandra
Temperance Cate
Temperance Jemima
Temperance Claire (ooh I like this one!)
Temperance Josephine
Temperance Shoshannah
