[Opinions] Edith?
Tonight I was watching a movie and the main character was named Edith.I *adore* the name Edith with the nn of Edie and have for a couple of years now. Do you think that it is an acceptable name to use on a child born in 2011? Do you think that they will resent their name or be teased for it?I love the combo of Edith Guinevere.Other names that I love are:
Felecity
Elodie
Elsa
Fiona
Zipporah
Eloise
Stella
Gwendolen
Genevieve
Evangeline
ElizabethWhat are your thoughts on my names? :) Any other suggestions (boy or girl) based on these that you think I may like?Thank you!

Edith is beautiful and nn Edie is too cute for words. An Edie would easily fit in with all of the little Evies right now. Edith Guinevere is fantastic. My stock combo is Edith Wren. Elsa has been a top ten name for me forever. All of your names are gorgeous classics. You'll have to have 11 dds because you'll never be able to whittle the list down. Let's make it harder, shall we? Hester, Matilda, Glynis, Leonie, Celia / Celeste, Rosamund, Evelyn, Enid, Morwenna, Marion, Lydia, Susannah, Catherine, Margaret / Margarethe / Marguerite, Ailsa, Marjorie / Margery, Petra, Vivien, Mary, Rowena, Kerensa, Muriel, Fenella, Cecily, Jacintha, Rosalind, Frances, Winifred, Anna, Lorelei, Antonia, Cassandra, Gemma, Ruby, Vanessa, Sibyl, Johanna, Vera, Natalie / Natalia, Philippa, Hadassah, Judith, Clara, Rosemary, Carlotta.

Edith's not bad at all. I used to think of Edith, Esther, Edna, and Ethel as the "old lady E's." Edna and Ethel are still firmly in that camp, but since naming trends have changed and I've heard of kids with these names (and someone my age named Esther), I've come to think of Edith and Esther as usable. I really like Edie as a nn. Edith Guinevere is a gorgeous combo! All your other names are rather nice (I'd spell Felecity as Felicity, though), but I really love Fiona.

I like Edith quite a bit, and I love Edie as a nickname. Five-to-ten years ago, I thought Edith was too All in the Family, too old lady, and too risky to use on a real child. I think it's completely acceptable now and really very charming. I was amused when I saw Despicable Me and saw that the creators had given the three girls names you could find in any hipster neighborhood: Margo, Edith, and Agnes. Edith Guinevere is a little too "apples and oranges" for me. Guinevere's over-the-top mythological beauty queen vibe makes Edith feel more dowdy by comparison. I'd prefer the similar, but slightly more grounded, Edith Gwendolen.I like your names with the exception of Evangeline and the spelling of Felicity.

Lol yes the spelling of Felicity was a typo that I didn't notice until AFTER I pushed send. I was like DOH! I much prefer Felicity to Felecity ;)

I likt Edith. I used to think it was an old lady name, then I played Edith in Pirates of Penzance and not I like it :P I wouldn't use it myself though.
I like Edith Guinevere! It makes Edith a lot less "old lady" sounding and more... I don't know... "vintage"?I like Elsa, Fiona, Zipporah, Gwendolen, and maybe Elizabeth

I think Edith is very sweet and I LOVE Edie! I most definitely think it would be acceptable to use Edith these days, not a problem. You could pretty much guarantee they'd be the only child in the class with that name, which is not a bad thing imo. Edith Guinevere is a gorgeous combo. Felicity, Elodie, Elsa, Zipporah, Eloise, Stella, Gwendolyn (prefer this spelling) and Elizabeth are all lovely too.

I think Edith is great, and Edith Guinevere is very pretty! I think Edith is definitely useable, especially with the nickname Edie (which I like too) - it would fit in nicely with Evies and ElliesFrom your list I also like Elodie, Elsa, Fiona, Eloise, Genevieve and Evangeline.

I love the name Edith Guinevere. I wish people Edith was use more. I like Edie as a first name, not just as a nickname. I'm not sure how someone would tease s girl named Edith. Maybe I'm not being creative enough. I like most of your names, except Felecity, Zipporah and Elizabeth. I love Elsa. I like the nickname Elsie. Here are my suggestions based on your name list.Marietta
Marlena
Mariella
Muriel
Moriah

I totally would have named my daughter Edith if my husband had not said he wasn't comfy with it. He said it was "too much of a statement." I'm not sure what that meant, but that's what he said. I think it just sounds sort of hipster? because it's so old-ladyish, but it isn't so unfashionable sounding or loaded with bad associations, I don't think, that it'd be hard to bear. I've met a young Olive and a young Eudora, and even a Delphine, and I think those are more of whatever kind of statement Edith is. And, I think they are fine.

Don't think I'd ever inflict it on a child... though it's not as bad as Ethel... nn of Edie is ok.

I don't see anything wrong with Edith. I have a soft spot for it. It's a sweet name that isn't too popular, and it works well for a variety of ages.I've met a young Edith before, so I can imagine as a young person's name.

Well, some people like it, but I think a number of people would find it rather ugly. I do. Similar category to Ethyl, but not quite as bad. Nn Edie redeems it somewhat. It feels kind of awkward too. Maybe it's the d and th together... Perhaps subconsciously a little too close to death in its sound...

Wow- inflict? Is it really that bad...??

My daughter thinks so. DH's stepmother was Edith Elizabeth, though she didn't use either of them, and we gave our daughter Elizabeth as a mn. She has never stopped thanking us for not going the Edith route instead! That said, she's got a friend named Gladys ...

yep. A lot of people think it's REALLY UGLY.

Really? Of all names to hate, it's Edith? Why is it so bad? I don't understand.

It's just ugly and frumpy. Doesn't sound very nice. Same category as Ethel. Very few names can pull off the th sound in the end or middle position and sound good to my ears as well as some others. That doesn't mean that YOU can't like it. It's just really unappealing to a number of ears.

I understand that some people might not like Edith, I just couldn't figure out why. I get it now. Thanks.

You're welcome. Could use it as a mn if you want and use both names as the child's growing up, incl. nns like Edie and let her choose which of those she wishes to go by as she grows up.
