[Opinions] Names from a class of Irish 9/10 year olds/New babies
I was tidying out some drawers and found a Christmas card from a friend. All the kids in her daughters class made a finger print and it was turned into a reindeer with their names underneath and the image was used for the Christmas card. I was going to toss it and I thought the board might be interested in the names on the card. It's a class of 9 or 10 years old in a typical middle class Dublin suburb. Louise x2

The surnames are Irish, African, Russian, Polish, Muslim I think. I was surprised by all the Ciaras - I knew it was popular but not that popular. And also by Yvonne, Stephanie and Shauna - they seem dated to me. I like Kate, Croía and Zaineb. And some new babies!Padraig - brother for Cornelius(Neil), Oisín and Cian. (He was born around Patrick's Day). Son of my brother's friend. Neil is a half brother to the other three.
Holly - daughter of my brother's friend.
Sam Seán - my friend Aileen's son. He would have been Isabella(Bella) if he was a girl. A and I had a really good discussion about names before he was born. She was a bit concerned about the Twilight connection with Bella but loved the name too much not to use it. In the event he was a boy anyway!

Katarzyna is pretty. I think Carla was the one I was most surprised to see. It's pretty dated here. Virginie is so adorable, I think so every time I see it! Croía is interesting. I'm assuming it's Irish. What does it mean?Sam Seán is actually pretty adorable, although I'd rather he'd a full first name. And I like Padraig a lot, but I think I prefer Padraic. I don't know. Sometimes I don't like the g.

Katarzyna was one of the kids with a Polish surname - I like it. Carla was never popular here so it doesn't seem that dated. Virginie is adorable. Croí is the Irish for heart so Croía could come from that I am guessing. I have heard of Croí as a name before. On the other hand there is also a word cré which means earth. Sam Seán is cute - Seán honours his grandfather. I think Samuel would have sounded a bit odd with their surname, it would have been a bit hard to say - though I would have preferred the full name myself. It could be Padraic - I only heard it from my mother - she was not impressed with it!

Oh yes, I knew croí meant heart. Didn't think of that.
