May
WDYTO the name May? Recently I have begun to like it whereas before I just dismissed it as an old lady name. Would it work on a child today or in the near future, or should it be a nickname for something like Maybelle?Any combo ideas for May? Also WDYTO May Belle as a double first name?

I love May and I think it works beautifully on a baby/child/woman of any age! I like it as a given name or as a nickname. (My favorite full name for May/Mae when using it as a nickname is Margaret.)I dislike Maybelle/May Belle.

Maybelle is unbearably hideous and if anything, May Belle is worse, but Mabel is very nice indeed. May could well be a nn but, like June, it can stand alone. Deep in my family tree there was a Madeline May, born in the 1890s and always known as May.May Isabella, if you like it. Madeline May had a sister Isabella, known as Bella.

I adore May. I prefer the spelling Mae as a fn though, it has more spunk IMO. I would seriously consider Mae as a fn for a future daughter myself, so I think it would work fine for a kid today.I actually also adore May Belle as a double fn but it sounds a bit hickish. I have played with the idea of the combo Mae Isobel and calling her Mae Belle as a nn

I love May, it's so pretty.I am not a fan of Mabel / Maybelle, May Belle. It reminds me of a story my dad used to tell us of Sydney Ant and Fat Mabel. Not a good association I'm afraid.Other pretty combos are;
May Josephine
May Dawn
May Helene

I love the name, but much prefer the spelling Mae. I think it's just a gorgeous name and would be very cute on a little girl these days. I actually like the name as a full name too. May Belle is pretty, but not a fave. What about:May Elise
May Phoebe
May Isabelle
May Iris
May Rhianna
May Emily
May Willow
May Angelina
May Audrey
May Sabrina
May Georgiana
May Jemima
May Juliet
May Keziah
May Lilia
May Zelda
May Clara
May Violet

I like it, but I like it as a solo name. I'm not fond of May + another name combos. I also don't really like it as a double first name.I'd pair something a little longer and retro with it, like May Emilia or May Ophelia.

I like itI think it's very cute and simple (in a good way). I also like the spelling Mae. Maybelle looks nice but I don't like May Belle as a double first name- mainly I guess because I'm not big on double first names in general. Mabel is another option but personally I prefer Maybelle.

It's a pretty name, and it's fine on its own. I witnessed May on a little girl online once, and it definitely worked for her. I'd love to meet a little May. Maybelle and May Belle are a bit too cutesy for me.Other ideas:
May Isadora
May Sophia
May Rosalie
May Rosaline
May Rosalind
May Eleanor
May Ellen
May Christine
May Cecilia / Cecelia
May Gwendolen
May Ophelia
May Cordelia
May Corina
May Corinne
May Carina / Karina
May Victoria
May Viviana
May Susannah / Susanna
May Estelle
May Adeline
May Georgia
May Cassandra
May Calandra
May Calanthe

I too really enjoy May. I think I like the down-home simpleness of Mae even more - it seems oddly edgy and urban, like the names Betsy and Betty are becoming in my mind. It also helps to downplay the association of May as a word (as in "May I...") which I find difficult to disentangle myself from.Maybelle / May Belle is very sweet, almost chokingly so, which I am starting to think is a new trend these days - super over the top girly names seem to be making quite the waves. I think if you like May + Belle, you might as well just smush them together and go with Maybelle nn May. Double first names are even more saccharine-sweet to me, so it would be total overkill in my mind. Combos! May is a toughie, I always find I get bamboozled by one-syllable names. Let me see.May Annabelle
May Cecilia
May Annemarie (aw that's sweet)
May Francesca
May Frances
May Caroline
May Celeste
May Claribel
May Dorothy
May Eleanore
May Elisabeth
May Felicity
May Miriam

I love seeing "filler" mns being used as a fn. And May is one of my favorites, except I only like the Mae spelling. In my line of work, the word "may" is a term of art and sets off red flags (as opposed to the word "shall.") So the Mae spelling is the only one that works for me. I prefer May / Mae as a nn for Mary. But it could stand on its own as well.I'm not a fan of Maybelle so May Belle does nothing for me. But I love Mabel. Mabel, nn May? How about:May Amelia ("Our Own May Amelia" by ___ Holm)
May Celeste
May Eleanor / Elinor / Lenore
May Adele
May Patricia
May Evelyn / Evelina
May Abigail
May Caroline / Charlotte (May Charlotte come over and play? I'm sorry, I can't get that auxiliary thing out of my head.)
May Fiona
May Glynis
May Elspeth
May Cathleen
May Siobhan
May Jacinda

I've always thought it was cute, but I've been liking it a lot more lately too. I don't think of it as an old lady name at all. To me it's very fresh and clear and bright. I think it could easily fit in with some of the popular names at the moment.I think it's alright on its own, but I personally would use it as a nn for Margaret. But I might spell it Mae then... not sure.I don't have any combos for May, and don't have the time to come up with some good ones right now. But I definitely want to try doing that soon! I don't think May Belle is that great as a double fn. Maybelle is a GP of mine, and I wouldn't mind seeing it in real life, but separating the names seems odd. It makes me think of when people name their daughter Emma Lee or something.
