Griselda
Griselda nn Zelda has suddenly become my favorite name. What??What do y'all think? Combos are tough with Griselda where they are really easy with Zelda; I come up with Griselda Rose (Rose honoring) but that seems about as much as I can do.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I stopped dying my hair six months ago. I now sport three inches of beautiful silver and joked with my dh that I should change my name to Griselda. Why? "Gray-haired battle maiden" is about THE coolest name meaning I've ever come across. Love it.I love the meaning, the sound and the kookiness of Griselda. Nn Zelda is spunky and delightful. (Come to think of it, Zelda was my nn in college, for other reasons. I've come full circle.)Griselda Rosamund (gets your honoring in there, but Rosamund shares the same fairy-tale princess feeling as Griselda)
Griselda Hester
Griselda Iris
Griselda Muriel
Griselda Frances
Griselda Phoebe
Griselda Vivien
Griselda Bryony
Griselda Sophie
Griselda Marion / Miriam
Griselda Ruby
Griselda Lucy
Griselda Catherine
Griselda Prudence
Griselda Blythe
Griselda Linnet ("LIN-et")

Griselda is tough to combo.I'd go with riding the lit wave to give it more romance and temper the haggish vibe than so many assocaite it with:Griselda Blanchefleur
Griselda Guinevere
Griselda Ianthe Eliza
Griselda Isolde
Griselda Aida
Griselda Lucinda
Griselda Lucasta
Griselda Mignon ("grey battle darling"!)
Griselda Norma
Griselda Ophelia
Griselda Perdita
Griselda Bianca
Griselda Charmion
Griselda Juliet
Griselda Katharina
Griselda Lenore
Griselda Maria
Griselda Phoebe
Griselda Rosaline
Alternatively I am liking it paired with very boyish, or short, or wordy middles:Griselda Robin
Griselda Rowan
Griselda Wren
Griselda Page
Griselda Fay

WHOA nice goin!
Griselda Blanchefleur
Griselda Guinevere
WHOA.
Wow. Those combos are like Griselda all decked up for prom.Griselda Aida's really interesting. I think I might have it Aïda. Heee. Norma's interesting too.
Hmmm the short names are interesting. Fair Wren Fay. hmmm.
Good tip about phrase names! how about Griselda Here-Be-Dragons

Griselda Here-Be-Dragons is a YES.

You get a prize for Griselda Mignon (grey battle darling). :-DGriselda Rosaline is wonderful, and it honors. Nicely done.

Hm. I do like it with the nickname Zelda, but I'm having a bit of a tough time with the Gris- beginning sound. It rather stongly reminds me of Gristle, Grizzly, etc. It's a harsher sound, and that's contrary to my style of female names.Overall, it's not my style, but I don't hate it - and I think Griselda Rose is a good combo. I think it needs something softer in the middle name slot to sort of soften the harsh first syllable.Griselda Alice
Griselda Violet
Griselda Iris
Griselda Ivy
Griselda Ruby
Griselda Pearl (thought I'd want something softer, but I like this!)
Griselda Lucy
Griselda May
Griselda Sophie
Griselda Eve
Griselda Willow

Oh man, Griselda Ruby's so cool! I don't usually even like Ruby and I love that. Griselda Pearl is great too, and May and Willow and someone suggested Iris already and Ivy and Violet. Ha. Thanks!

Whoa, Griselda Greer! Bam!I really like Griselda Severina even though you didn't suggest it, Griselda Beatix, Griselda Danielle, Griselda Jane, Griselda Magaret. How I wish I liked Griselda Thomasina! I adore Zelda Thomasina, it could be my #1 easily.

Griselda Morag -- now there's a name with fortitude. Love it. Actually, Griselda Mor sounds nice too.Griselda Harriet, Griselda Mary, Griselda Eulalia, Griselda Beatrix (how darling!) and Griselda Charlotte are also noteworthy.
vote up1
Ooh, I never thought of Griselda Mor! I like that even more than Griselda Morag!
vote up1
Griselda Greer! That's a great combo - not something that I'd think of myself, but I love the sound of it. Really strong.

Sorry, I see the appeal, it's a good name on paper and all, sort of subversive or whatever. But I would absolutely not want to be named Griselda. Even if I came from a family that had genes for carrying it off. I'd want to be spared from it. Plain old Zelda is okay, and Zelda Rose is fine, I don't think I can beat it.
vote up1
man, that's the frustrating thing, it doesn't feel subversive to me, I just think it is absolutely beautiful, some silvering oak tree in a dark woods, something old and woody and meditative. I wish people liked it, I don't feel like making an enormous societal statement every time I admit my favorite name is Griselda. I do like Zelda on its own a lot but something about it coming from Griselda makes it so much more deep and powerful to me. Zelda is so exuberant and Griselda is so pensive. Having the power of both identities is really impressive to me right now. *sigh* good thing i'm not naming kids for a while

This ... is ... tricky. I don't like the sound or the look of Zelda. Don't know why: just one of those things. I like both the sound and the look of Griselda; but I'm so thoroughly turned off by that ghastly little medieval 'heroine' that I couldn't imagine it used in real life.
vote up1
what medieval heroine do you mean, just the name or is there some extra-name association?
vote up1
"Patient Griselda" is a character in either Chaucer or Boccacio. I forget which. I've never read the tales, but her character is famous for her patience.
vote up1
Specifically, her patience at putting up with ongoing abuse from her ghastly husband, who for dark medieval reasons of his own is 'testing' her 'worth'. Finally he admits to this and they live happily ever after. Makes you glad to live in this century.

I will have to go along with the majority of the non-name-nerd general public and designate Griselda quite hideous. Zelda isn't so bad. I'd prefer Zelda by itself.
vote up1
Griselda? That's a new one. It makes me think of a stern, older German woman for some reason.I absolutely adore Zelda, however. I'm not the best combo person, but here are some suggestions:Griselda Marie
Griselda Annabel
Griselda Katherine
Griselda Lillian
Griselda Victoria
Griselda Beatrice
Griselda Mary
Griselda Johanna
Griselda Ruth
Griselda Iris
vote up1
Ooh, I like these soft names next to it, Katherine and Lillian. Griselda Iris is really very cool also, I love the motifs of the R and I and S. wooow that's really cool actually, look at that, griselda i ris. and they function so differently, and it's so neat and spiky. Wow, i love it, thanks.
