BTN's Favorite Names 2014 (updated 12-14-14)

As I have before, I counted up everyone's top tens for the last year to come up with BTN's favorite names.
I count similarly to the SSA: Accents don’t count (for example, Leo and Léo are counted as the same name), when middle names are posted, they’re ignored, different spellings are separate, and on the occasion when a post could not decide on a name, I counted the first one (like, if you post Luke / Lucas, I only count Luke), if a name was obviously a double name, I counted it as one. Only 10 names per gender per person were counted, so if you occasionally posted a top 12 or something, the last two names didn’t count.
There’s a new #1 for both genders this year! For boys, Arthur is number 1. It has never ranked higher than #6 before this year.
And for girls, Eleanor is number 1. It has never been #1 before either, but it ranked at #2 way back in 2008.
Last year’s number 1s were Rose (which is now #4) and Henry (which is now #2).
Here is the top 23 for girls and top 30 for boys. If you want to get an idea of how many people have the name in their top ten, divide the number in parenthesis by 12.
(updated dec 6 for 2 more people's top tens; might have posted a little too soon. oops.)

As always, I can send you the files if you PM me with your email (I have 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and All-Time files).
I will also post the full data for this year below.
---
New top name of all time: Alice (previous Iris, which is now #3). Henry remains #1 all-time for boys.
We have now posted 2221 boys names and 2775 girls names– we posted 173 new boys and 189 new girls names this year!
Truthfully, I think the all-time data is probably a bunch of useless numbers but I find them interesting anyway, so here are the top tens, 2008-2014:
1. Alice (288 - was #2 last year)
2. Rose (285 - was #3 last year)
3. Iris (277 - was #1 last year)
4. Charlotte (243)
5. Helena (232)
6. Eleanor (221, did not make the top 10 last year)
7. Louisa (219, was #9 last year)
8. Matilda (205, did not make the top 10 last year, replaces Cecily)
9. Anna (201, was #6 last year)
10. Penelope (196, did not make the top 10 last year, replaces Elizabeth)
Leaving: Lydia (was #7, now tied for #11), Cecily (was #8, now tied for #11), Elizabeth (was #10, now #12)
1. Henry (452)
2. Alexander (370 - was #4 last year)
3. William (361 - was #2 last year)
4. August (352 - was #5 last year)
5. Theodore (345 - was #3 last year)
6. Arthur (328)
7. Leo (298 - was #8 last year)
8. James (294, was #7 last year)
9. Felix (290)
10. Thomas (268, did not make the top 10 last year, replaces Samuel)
Leaving: Samuel (was #10, now #12)

Thank you so much for all this, it's so interesting!!
It's great comparing my own top tens to this. I've have Eleanor, Alice, Helena, Lyra, Lily, Luna, Astrid, Juliet, Viola, Stella, Clara, Cecilia, Marina, Lucy, Margot, Beatrice, Arthur, Alexander, Leo, Oliver, Charles, Evander, Jasper, Roman, Edmund, Julian and Jude in my top tens throughout the year.
It's funny how we seem more diverse in our choices of girls' names. Less people have the top girls names than the top boys names. (Slightly insecure about my prowess with numbers - but that's right, right?) I know I'm most definitely more diverse with my girls' names. I have a much, much longer of favourite girls' names than boys'.
Thanks again for this brilliant data!

That's right. There's way more girls names on the list (901 girls names this year, only 778 boys names), so the data is a lot more spread out, so the numbers are lower (which is why I could only do a top 22 for girls while I could get to 30 for boys. If I went any further for girls, the lists would have gotten very long.
For that reason, the girl's #1 name has changed way more frequently than the boys:
2008: Anna
2009: Iris
2010: Alice
2011: Alice
2012: Iris
2013: Rose
2014: Eleanor
2008: Henry
2009: Henry
2010: William
2011: Henry
2012: Theodore
2013: Henry
2014: Arthur
(I was about to say it happens in real life too, but just looked and found out that the top girl's names have consistently had higher numbers than the boys since 2008 [but before that, it was always boys with the higher numbers]. Which only convinces me more there's going to be some major changes soon on the boy's SSA list).
I like you...
Can I just say... I had no idea this is what happened with those monthly posts for the top 10!
Love it!
It reads a lot like the Social Security index, and I have spent a lot of time giddy over those lists.
I would like to comment specifically on names (5 people like Evren!), but will have to devote more time to it when I am not on a break at work.
Cheers to you, and Kudos on the effort!

It's not necessarily that five people have Evren in their top 10, it was more than likely one person who had Evren in their top ten five times, since it's by month.
Like, for example, Parisa and Tirzah have 12 points each– That means I had them in my top 10 every month. Eleanor is posted by 4-5 people every month on average, and Arthur was posted by 6 people a month on average.
But for a board with such a small group of active members, that's still a lot. And for every person who liked it enough to have it in their top ten, there has to be a handful that like it, just not enough for their top 10 names.

Actually, I realized my mistake last night but never came on to correct myself.
I am sure I listed it in my top ten the months I posted. However, it is nice to see it listed anywhere.
I am still planning on perusing the full list for some gems though. Thanks for the effort you put in.

Lovely lists. :) I always enjoy them. Thanks for compiling the data, RS.
New Year's resolution: In 2015, I'm going to contribute to the monthly Top 10 posts.

Thanks for doing this! :) I definitely prefer BTN's list to the official charts!
