Older Male Names For New Babies
I did this earlier with girls. There are many "older" male names that have yet to come back around. If you had a son right now and had to choose only ONE of these names for his first name, which would you choose?Clarence
Walter
Eugene
Howard
Clarence
Roy
Herbert
Warren
Clyde
Alvin
Cecil
Dwight
Doyle
Alfred
Dennis

Alfred. It works fine in both Swedish and English and it's a nice character from Astrid Lindgren's books about Emil.

Clarence. But I also like Walter, Alvin and Dennis.

ClarenceI do have a real soft spot for Clarence, and would love to use.
vote up1
AlfredI do also like Walter, but we have a Walter in the family already.

CecilI adore it! The runners-up are Walter, Eugene, Clarence, Herbert, and Alfred.
vote up1
DoyleIt's my mother's maiden name, so I'd consider using it.

Walter — I love Walt.Clarence is runner-up.

I like Clarence, Walter, Warren, Cecil, Dwight (thank you, Poldark!) and Alfred. I’m actually seriously swaying towards Dwight right now!

Cecil or Dennis

Cecil, Roy or Walter, depending on what he looked like. All are family names.IRL I probably wouldn't use Cecil for a boy because I'd hope to have a daughter I could name Cecily.

I'd choose Alfred. It's one of my favorites and high up on my list. Both Alfred, Alvin and Walter are really popular where I live though. I don't really mind Dennis either, and I also like Roy and Warren.
vote up1
I think I'd pick Dennis. I really like the nn Denny. I also like Walter, Warren, and Alfred.
vote up1
I would choose Clarence because of the the soft, complex aesthetic of it. Clarence Walter would make a good combo.
vote up1
Mmm.. I'm tied between Eugene and Alfred (Walter as a close third).I'd go Eugene only because Alfie is so popular.

My favourite out of these is Alfred because of all the cute nickname possibilities: Al, Alfie, Fred and Freddie. I think Alfred would work well on a man throughout his entire life.

omg...i like many old man names, but almost every name you listed has a Terrible association to me. or just sounds hideous.i guess Alfred, because i love the nickname Al. OH ALSO I COULD USE THE NICKNAME ALREDO LINGUINI!! OR ALFREDO SAUCE!! actually Alfredo is a pretty sounding name. Walter and Howard would be close if not for Walter White and Todd Howard.other old male names that i actually like:Albert
Alphonse
Arthur
Conrad
Desmond
Edmond
Ephraim
Everard
Hiram
Neil

I had said I'd choose Clyde but I just remembered Wally as a nickname for Walter and that's adorable. If I were to choose a first and middle name from the list it'd be Walter Clyde (was Clyde Walter)

Eugene. I'm a fan of Walter & Warren as well

I choose Clarence. Not a favourite, but I could live with it.
Maybe Clyde? Or, do you like Clive?
vote up1
I can't drive between Cecil and Walter.
I'll offer up the following that I like :
Heath
Blaise
Edgar
Royce
Vernon
Clive
vote up1
I see that you like Clive too.
Really like Blaise. and Edgar. I had an uncle who was named Edgar. Although he was never called that in the family, he was always called T.T. which were in no way his initials. Don't know where it came from, my mother's family (he was one of her brothers) was given to nick-naming.
vote up1
Yeah, Blaise and Edgar were on our short list for boys. Heath has taken over lately, but I still like both. Clive just seems so simple and edgy.
vote up1
Clyde is kind of cool
vote up1
None of these strike me as very attractive. If pressed, I would use Warren or Alfred.
vote up1
Probably Eugene. I think it's due for a "nerd chic" revival.I also like Clarence, Walter, Howard, Roy, Warren, Alfred, and Dennis.
vote up1
Clyde,
vote up1
Walter or Eugene. Both would be adorable on a baby/toddler, cute on a young child, handsome on a teen/young adult, and mature and endearing on an adult man!

Well, Basil, Isidore, and Waldo are from the same era. I'd use any of those.I know a Cecil. He's in his 30s.From your list, I'd narrow it down to: Walter
Howard
Clarence
Roy
Doyle
AlfredRight now I'll go with Howard.

I love Eugene and Clarence but think I'd choose Clarence.Alvin and Dennis are also favorites I'd use

These are already on the top 1000:Walter - #265, rising (I'm actually surprised it's this high)
Eugene - #813, relatively steady
Howard - #999, pretty steady; it keeps bouncing off and on
Roy - #537, steady
Warren - #360, rising
Clyde - #707, rising
Alvin - #603, steady
Alfred - #861, kind of steady, kind of dropping?
Dennis - #544, dropping (I see it a lot as a middle name though)
These are off chart & steady (within 5 births) from 2016 to 2017:
Clarence
Herbert
Cecil
Dwight (ok, it's a 6 birth difference)These are off chart and falling from 2016 to 2017:
Doyle (it went from 10 babies to 18; no one uses this)--If I had to pick one, Walter, or Cecil because it's a family name on DH's side.
This was easier than the girls because most of these are not particularly nice.
Here are some old man names that would have made a more intriguing selection (imo):
Arnold
Earl
Ernest
Floyd
Frank
Gilbert
Harold
Harvey (making a pretty nice comeback actually)
Homer
Howard
Maurice
Norman
Stanley
Wallace(feel free to pick one; I'd pick Floyd if I were doing a first name)

Harold!natch lol (Harry Styles' full name)

Of these, I would pick Wallace. It reminds me of William Wallace, so I gives off a heroic rebel with a cause.
vote up1
Warren probably, although I don't like any from that list. I do like Gilbert and Gerald which you didn't list.
vote up1
Walter. I like it, and find Walt so endearing.
vote up1
It is so endearing! Glad others think so too.
vote up1
This is easy. Walter :)
The only other name from that list that I would consider is Alfred. I prefer Royce over Roy. Names like Dwight, Dennis and Clyde should never make a come back in my opinion. The rest are tolerable.
