[Opinions] Alison, Charlotte, Alice or Claire?
I am wondering what your impressions are of the following. I am looking for a not-too-popular classic and Charlotte is about as popular as I am willing to go (in North America). Our last name is short, one syllable and very quite masculine / strong. So what are your thoughts on:Lara & Alison
Lara & Charlotte
Lara & Alice
Lara & Claire
Charlotte has been the front runner thus far, but I am still looking for something similarly classic, pretty but not as popular.Thank you, again!

Alice is my choice, as it's definitely my fave from the list. Sounds good with Lara too.

Still not sure about your daughter's name? ;)I love Alice, it's gorgeous. It goes well with Lara, too. It makes me think of Alice in Wonderland which I love.I never liked Claire. It always seemed very trendy to me. Late 90s trendy.I used to dislike Alison but it has grown on me. Now I rather like it. I think it's underused at the moment and pretty.I dislike Charlotte. It's so trendy I'm sure it will end up in the top 10.If I had to rate them:1. Alice
2. Alison
3. Claire
4. CharlotteAnd if popularity is an issue to you avoid Charlotte! It's rising so quickly, I can even imagine it becoming the number 1 name in a few years.Suggestions:Emmeline and Lara
Annabel and Lara
Annabella and Lara
Evangeline and Lara
Margaret and Lara
Hazel and Lara
Eleanor and Lara
Phoebe and Lara

If it was me, I'd go for Alice like a shot; or for Alison, though I can't use it because of my DH's family issues; or for Clare without the i. But I'm not in North America, so what do I know?

re: not in n. america : I like x-cultural input!!!!!!

I like them all but I'd have to go with Lara and Alice.

Have to admit I like Charlotte best of these, but with its current popularity along with the popularity of Claire and Alice higher than before, I'd consider Alison a good choice since it's not overused these days.

I don't like Alison in general, Claire doesn't sound like it would go with your last name, and I don't like Alice paired with Lara. Charlotte is my pick regardless of the popularity.

Ooh, tough one. Alison, Claire, and Charlotte are all such good names. Claire is about as popular as Charlotte, just on a slower curve up. Both those are totally not-too-popular classics, never really totally out of style, but Charlotte seems trendier. Alice is on a steep curve up, and was much more common for longer in the past. I still think of it as dated and dowdy, and I don't like it, but Charlotte and Claire never even seemed dated that way for me. Alison will probably seem the most like it's too old for her when she is grown, and that's the only reason I'd be inclined to strike it off. So I'm voting for Charlotte, second place to Claire. May I suggest Caroline too? It fits the not-too-popular classic profile, and seems to have the sounds you like.Personal impressions: they all sound smart ..
Alison - independent, softspoken, least likely of any of them to seem stuckup.
Charlotte - reserved, feminine
Claire - it reminds me of the word flair so there's that. Tidy too, maybe clipped.

suggestion of caroline...I love Caroline but the nn Carrie, if used, would spell a bad word / teasing nightmare (very bad potential) with our last name. So bad, I cant even really write it here! ... but your advice is fab + appreciated

Charlotte so far is only number 66 http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/pop/2010/2010xx01.htmlBut as people have pointed out in the past it is only getting more popular.
I've been thinking about it lately and even though every Alison I've known but one of them has been a mean bully I don't necessarily think of bullies when I hear the name. When I picture an Alison / Allison I think of someone with strawberry blonde hair or red hair or red-brown hair with freckles and brown or hazel or dark blue eyes. She would be naturally fair but since she is super sporty and tomboyish she is fairly tan during the summer. She would love to play volley ball and soccer and she would train in martial arts. She could be a bully or a spunky fireball who beats up bullies. She'd have a lot of friends, but is not necessarily popular. She would speak her opinions with out curbing her tongue. She would be passionate but because of her passion she'd have a strong temper. She'd have to learn to control her anger or else get into a lot of trouble.Alice is more feminine than Alison. It brings to mind someone who has a classic style that is feminine without being frilly. Alice also makes me think of someone who is a little more quiet and calm and often likes to read and write. Charlotte has a similar feel as Alice. Though I see Charlotte as being a tiny bit more frilly and a little more sporty.Claire reminds me of someone who is kind of like Alice and Alison. Feminine but not frilly and also a bit sporty and tomboyish.Right now I currently like all of these names. They all go well with Lara. Lara has a very similar feel to me as Charlotte. Slightly frilly but also someone who is a bit sporty.

Some suggestion names.....I looked through the SSA name popularity database and looked up when Charlotte was most popular 1880 through now. Then I looked through all the names that were as popular or more popular than Charlotte during those decades and wrote down any of them that reminded me of Charlotte or some of the other names you like.
So here they are:Carol / Carole, Carolyn, Catherine, Margaret, Nancy, Susan, Sharon, Francine, Joyce, Jacqueline, Rose, Gail, Diana, Diane, Cynthia, Elaine, Jane, Helen, Martha, Florence, Grace, Sarah, Lillian, Pearl, Myrtle, Marie, Josephine, Sadie, Irene, Viola, Caroline, Della, Hazel, Harriet, Ruby, Rebecca, Virginia, Amanda, Amelia, Evelyn, Dorothy, Dorothea,

I like Claire the best followed by Alison.Claire is a spunky, classy name that I have always liked.I also like Alice.Charlotte, which decent, has always seemed kind of bland to me based on sound.

My favourites are Alice and Claire with Lara. I'm not a huge fan of Charlotte, and Alison is pretty, but I prefer the other two. :)

I agree that's there's too many matchy R sounds going on in Lara and Charlotte and Lara and Claire. I don't like Alison, so Alice it is! It's a lovely name.

AliceAll of your choices are feminine classics that will age well. You can't go wrong with any of them. If I had to use some kind of reasoning to whittle the list down this is how it would go. First I'd cross off Charlotte because the repeated "ahr" sounds of Lara and Charlotte annoy my ears. Alison would go next because it doesn't have the same sweetness for me as Alice*. Alice has so many more associations for my brain to play with. Lara and Claire have too much "r" sounds going on. So that leaves Alice as the last name standing. Lara and Alice get my vote. Are you looking for suggestions with Lara? :-)
* Disclosure: Alice Mary was my grandmother's name. So I'm biased. But I still think of Alice in Wonderland so there are other sweet associations for me as well.

I like Lara & Charlotte. Lara & Alison is okay, but I think I prefer Lara & Alice because Alice is short, like Lara. Lara & Claire is good too.
Usually I would say Claire is my least favorite of these names, but I actually like the way Claire goes with Lara better than the others. I like Charlotte, but it's so much longer than Lara that I'm sort of hesitant to say that I like it in this sibset.
If it were me, I'd probably go with Alice. Other ideas could be Cora, Coral, Cleo, Charis, Caris, or Calla. Chloe would be great for Lara if only it weren't popular! Or on the A side, Alyse or Aline?
