"Ocean Zane"
I've wanted to name my son who by the way is due in 3 weeks Ocean since I found out I was having a boy. My husband's parents and some of my family have given us flack for this and want us to reconsider. My husband wants to use Ocean as a middle name but I'm having a hard time finding a first name I like that goes with it. I want to stay true to my heart but I'm a little apprehensive. Any outside opinions will help at this point! Please Help!

Thank you for all your responses and great ideas on first names. This has really helped me a lot! Still willing to take anymore critiques if you got 'em!

I don't think it's any more out there than using Oisin in the US, which some friends of mine did. Their Oisin is now in his 30's, and, after introducing himself has perfected the line "It's sort of like poison without the p."I know of three young women with variations on the name Ocean--Oceanna, Oceana, and Oceania.I love nature names and applaud you for thinking outside the box. I even know a couple who successfully pulled off naming their son Yellow--I say successfully because he grew up and did really well for himself, even works for the state now. In general, I think names can have however much dignity the parents can muster. (Barring really bad taste Kreeativ spellings or puns). That said, I also think you and your husband really need to be on the same page. But I agree with those who are saying don't worry about your relatives so much, it's your baby to name. I let my MIL pressure me into not using a name I loved, and I've always regretted it.

Ocean I like, but prefer on a girl. Zane is ok... kinda pastey. I think ending both w/ the n sound is kinda unappealing though...Is it the sound or the meaning that draws you to the name Ocean? Marino could be ok. Kai (ky) is Jpns. for ocean, but common enough in western culture to get away with sound-wise.

Ocean is kind of a GP of mine and I love Zane (as well as Zayne and Zain). I think it is better as a middle name.

I love the name Zane, and I like Ocean Zane. I can understand concerns of your family, but ultimately he is the child of you and your husband, and you can't make everyone happy with a name. Here are some combos with Ocean as a middle name to spark some ideas (using random names - I'm not sure what names you like):
Thomas Ocean
Benjamin Ocean
Lucas Ocean
Rupert Ocean
Henry Ocean
Alexander Ocean
Nicholas Ocean
Xavier Ocean
Xander Ocean
Matthew Ocean
Samuel Ocean
Elliott Ocean
Tobias Ocean
Malachi Ocean
Zephyr Ocean
Levi Ocean
Caleb Ocean
Phoenix Ocean
Zane Ocean
Damian Ocean
Theodore Ocean
Lennox Ocean
Vincent Ocean
Cameron Ocean

As I love most nature names, I love Ocean. Some alternatives I also like are River and Lake, and it's alternate spelling Laik. Zane always makes me think of the old show M*A*S*H and how Col Potter always read Zane Gray westerns. Personally I would use Ocean as his first name, but pair it with something a little more traditional for his middle name.

I agree, I think Ocean is a little too much for a first name, but it would make a nice middle name. I checked the name themes on this site for "watery." I didn't find anything that really stuck out to me, but you might want to check there. Good luck :)
