[Opinions] Eleanor, Elizabeth and Martha
What do you think of these names together with the nicknames Nell, Bess and Mittie? Can you think of any other classic type names with nicknames that have a double letter. I'd like the nickname to be one that's not as common as other. For example, Margaret nn Maggie is nice, but Maggie is one of the more common nicknames for Margaret. Elle is more common for Eleanor than Nell and half a dozen other names are more common for Elizabeth than Bess.

Forgot, I knew a little girl named Louisa...With the nickname Lissy. I thought that was so sweet. Louisa would make a great sister to Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Martha.

I love all of those names. Nell and Mittie are cute, but I don't really like Bess too much. My favorite nicknames for Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Martha would be Nora, Libby/Lily/Ellie, and Martie. As for the other half, there are a lot. Mary nn Molly or Polly, Millicent nn Millie, Sarah nn Sally, and there's also Meggie or Peggy for Margaret. And for Elizabeth there's also Lizzie and Betty.

Nora is one of my favorite Eleanor nicknames. Betty and Lizzie are nice for Elizabeth, but I do not like the other three. As for Mary, Millicent, Sarah and Margaret and their nicknames, I like all of them

I like:
Margaret nn Gretta
Millicent nn Millie
Abigail nn Nabby (That's what John Adams called his daughter!)
Agnes nn Nessy (If only the wasn't Renesmee's nickname. Twilight ruins so many names.)
Bertha nn Boots (I like it because it's a silly nickname.)
Evelyn nn Effy
Clarissa nn Rissa
Constance nn Connie
Isadora nn Issy
Minerva nn Minnie
Penelope nn Neppy (I've never heard that one before.)
Theresa nn Tessa
Wilhemina nn Minnie

I love the idea. Another Elizabeth nn, my favorite, is Libby. A few others:Mary nn Molly
Catherine nn Kitty
Theresa nn Tessie
Sarah nn Sally
Adelaide nn Della
Phillipa nn Pippa/Pippy
Hannah nn Annie/Anne
Margaret nn Polly/Dolly
Dorothy nn Dolly
Juliette nn Jette

I love Theresa nn Tessie. Sarah nn Sally, Mary nn Molly and Catherine nn Kitty are nice too. Polly doesn't strike me as a nickname for Margaret, but then again, Margarety nicknames are very flexible. I like that one too.

Libby for Elizabeth (also Elsie--I know that it doesn't follow the rule, but I still think that it's really pretty), Millie for Mathilda or Amelia, Liddy for Lydia, Kerry for Kieran, Keely for Keelin, Ebby for Ebony, Ebele, or any other names I can't think of, Tilly for Mathilda, also, Minnie for...Wilhelmina? maybe just Elmina, Winnie (LOVE!) for Winifred, Winter, Winona, Winslett, Winston, Winsome...whatever (:
That's all that I can think of right now.

Millie/Tilly for Mathilda, Liddy for Lydia, Minnie for Wilhemina and Winnie fir Winifred are all very nice. Kieran, Keelin, Ebony and Winslett weren't quite what I was looking for.

I like Catherine with the nickname Hattie. I also like Kitty for Katherine. Minnie for Mary is pretty too.
vote up1
I knew a lady named Catherine who went by Hattie, I forgot about that

I like the other two, but Hattie? Where did that one come from?

Bea is nice for Beatrice and Aggie is good for Agatha and Agnes, but they are both the standard nicknames for the names that they represent.
Dolly as a nickname for Dorothy is pretty nice.
vote up1
I like Tilly for Matilda and Lottie for Charlotte even if they are sort of common for those names.
Kitty for Katharine (I love this spelling) is good.
Belinda is nice, but maybe with just Lynn.
Penelope is the only name that I will freely let Eleanor share Nell with.

I love Elizabeth and Martha, but I have always dislike Eleanor. I also dislike the nicknames Bess and Mittie. Bess is a cow and always has been; Mittie sounds like "mitigate" or something. Nell is adorable. Go figure, it's on the name I dislike. >< For Elizabeth, I like the nicknames Libby and Betta.I'll give you the nicknames and then the names that could go with them:ABBY

Abigail nn Abby and Mary nn Molly are good, but common for those name. Margaret nn Molly interests me a little.
Jenny seems like too modern a nickname.
Nell is something that I really, really like for Eleanor. Maybe Ellen, but definitely not Helen.
It's not your fault, but I don't like Lilly and Bella at all.
Tibby is cute. I like it on Tabitha, but I'm having trouble seeing it on Isabel.
Libby . . . meh. I've never quite liked it.
Betta is a bit too much like "better."
Addie could be nice for Adeline. Not for Adriana, though. My sister's name is Adrianna and we always call her Adri.
Dell is very sweet. I like it best with Delphina (and maybe a little more with Delphine).
Etta is nice. I like it with Henrietta and Benedetta.

Oh, I love Nell for Helen, it's a top contender for me.

I like them as a set and utterly love Martha! Bess & Nell are lovely but Mittie sounds off to my ears. The only other nickname for Martha I know of is Marty, I know a Martha who goes by Marty. But that doesn't fit with Bess & Nell very well, does it? Hmm. Bess, Nell & Marta, perhaps?
vote up1
Marta does sound very cool. The only reason why I used Mittie in the question are that Mittie fits the double letter theme and it was Theodore Roosevelt's mother's nickname. That reminds me . . . His sister was Corinne nn Connie. That one kind of works too.

I like Eleanor, Elizabeth, Martha, Nell and Bess. Dislike Mittie. I'm not generally a fan of longer names with nn so I would usse any of the names in my like list as full names. Here are some nn for Classic names I've heard - they're probably too common but theY have the double letter so here goes.Veronica-Ronnie
Mildred-Millie
Olivia-Ollie
Emeline-Emmy
Esmeralda-Esmee
Mary-Molly
Dahlia-Dolly
Margaret-Peggy
Dorothy-Dotty
Priscilla-Cilla
Linnea-Linny
Tabatha-Tabby
Abigail-Abbey
Anabelle-Annie/Belle

I like Molly for Mary, Peggy for Margaret, Dotty for Dorothy, Tabby for Tabitha and Abbey for Abigail. They actually are too common for each of the names, but I like them anyway.

It's nice, but I prefer Ella (or Nellie) and Libby instead of Nell and Bess. Also, Patty can be a nickname for Martha if you prefer that.Other names you might like:
Adelaide / Adele / Adelle "Addy / Addie"
Annabel "Belle" or "Bella"
Amelia / Camille "Millie"
Cecilia / Frances / Priscilla "Cissy / Sissy" or "Cilla"
Francesca "Franny" / "Fanny"I suppose some of those could be too common, but I still think they are nice and not overly popular

Ella is still a bit too common for Eleanor, but Patty for Martha is interesting. It doesn't have the same feel as Nell and Bess and the p is a bit odd, but it's still interesting.I like Amelia nn Millie and Francesca nn Franny, although I would probably go with Frances instead of Francesca.

I love all three of those names, but I can't stand the nicknames.I can't think of a good nickname for Eleanor. I like it the way it is.Elizabeth has Betty, Ellie, and Lizzie, which I think might be too common for your specifications.Martha has Mattie, which is also kind of common. Etta; Harriet, possibly Elizabeth
Bella; Arabella, Isabella, Annabella,
Donna (okay, I don't think this is a nickname)
Cassie; Cassia, Cassidy, Cassandra
Minna(I love this on its own)/Minnie; Wilhelmina

I like Betty and I don't think that it's that common for Elizabeth, but I have it doing something else in another sibset.Of your suggestions, I like Etta, Donna and Minnie, but I would like Etta better for Henrietta.

I like Eleanor and Elizabeth. I think Martha is cute.
