I really like Maxine. Yes, I actually like this one. With an ending similar to Josephine, Amandine, Florentine, etc., it has a french feel to it, but the Max makes it less frou-frou.
Of course, there's always Maxine from the animated TV show Arthur....http://babynames.com/namelist/9697577 !!!!

Maxine is a very "sleek" name to me, very sultry. I'd love to see it come back in style. The only down-side is the obvious nn Max -- I wouldn't like that on a girl. Maxie / Maxi doesn't work either because it reminds me of maxi-pads. :-( That's not to say she has to have a nn. But it's still something to keep in mind.That said:Maxine Olivia

That's the name of the street I live on. The streets are named for the builders wives in the 1960s. There are also Murial, Gretta, June, Martha, Dorothy, Mary Ellen...just to give you an idea of the pond a name like Maxine is swimming in.

I really like Maxine- it's strong, spunky and elegant- my only hesitation is the nn Max- there are just so many around these days. As a whole though, it's an underused gem:)
